I believe Ten Hag said that to convince himself if he would not be sacked from Manchester United. It's to make sure he's not losing the trust from their fans as well.

What’s left ahead is how much advantage you take from past results and Manchester City just equaled the platform for both of them rivals, Arsenal and City for the trophy. I agree with you that Ten Hag is not suitable as Manchester United coach. Moreover, in Ten Hag's third season at Manchester United, the quality of Manchester United game has continued to deteriorate even though Manchester United has spent a lot of money recruiting players that Ten Hag wants. The man does care about how the players play, if they like they should play well or not he doesn't care, all he knows is that nothing positive can come out of these guys and he's just there at UTD for the money/his contract and the board members are the ones killing Manchester United if so. I feel the players  knows about this development and it annoys many of them that they even find it hard to put their best in any crucial game, I wonder how they'll play when it's time for the Manchester derby.
Erik ten Heg only has the selections to make and maybe talk to the players like every other manager does but to me he can't wait to leave Manchester United because his mind is not there to be frank with you, his body language says it all so he had to do whatever he feel like doing after all they can't sack him, but let's see if these things continue till the end of the season.
