Eredivisie 23/24 - discussion thread

Not successful beginning of season for PSV - after loss in Super Cup, now they dropped points in opening round of Eredivisie. Fortuna Sittard made score 2;2 after scoring very late goal.
Tomorrow we have Rotterdam derby between Feyenoord and Sparta, then Zwolle - Ajax and interesting game between Twente and Heerenveen

They will be one of the top teams that were unlucky in the first round, because Feyenoord and Ajax both won their games. I bet on Ajax and was a little worried after the first half. Even though Ajax were playing much better and controlling the game, they just couldn’t score. But when Floranus
was sent off in the second half in the 57th minute, I had almost no doubt that Ajax would win. And by the end of the match, they managed to score two goals.

AZ Alkmaar managed to win their first league match at home against ADO Den Haag thanks to goals scored in the second half. There weren’t many scoring opportunities in the first half, but the second half was more action-packed. It’s worth noting that ADO Den Haag finished the match without managing a single shot on goal. It was important for AZ Alkmaar to start the league with 3 points by avoiding any mistakes in their home game. Among this week’s surprising results, I’d single out PSV. Nijmegen’s loss could also be added to that list.

The new season kicked off last weekend.
The major surprise of the first round is Fortuna Sittard earning point in an away game against the current champions, PSV.
PSV dominated the game but had a hard time scorring. They were down 1-0 after the first half but responded with two goals in the 2nd half. They relaxed a little bit too soon and allowed Fortuna to score the equaliser in the stoppage time.

Was it just a minor beginning-of-the-season hiccup for PSV or an indication of something bad going on with them? I guess we'll find out next Saturday when PSV will play away against the current leader, Excelsior, who defeated Cambuur with ease (4-0) in the first round.

Very interesting round with several upsets. Yesterday I already wanted to write rant about PSV and how bad their start of season is. But soon after Excelsior equalised score, PSV took a lead again.
Feyenoord wasted 2:0 lead against Go Agead Eagles. Don't know what you guys think, but for me their decision to sack van Persie and appoint van Bronckhorst looks questionable. Ajax had samescenario like Feyenoord - wasted 2:0 leag vs Heerenveen.

Excelsior did very well in the first round (they defeated Cambuur 4-0) but they had to succumb to PSV pressure on Saturday. PSV dominated but it wasn't a convincing win. They scored early but allowed Excelsior to equalise in the 54th minute. A win is a win, but given the advantage PSV had when it comes to shots on goal, I would expect to see a few more goals.

After two rounds, all the big 3 clubs lost some points and now have 4 points each. AZ Alkmaar are at the top after another win. This time, they defeated Utrecht at home 4-1, a really big win. Who knows, maybe this time they have what it takes to fight for the top 3.

We had a few games featuring Dutch teams in the 1st leg of the play-off round of the Conference League.
Ajax scored a 4-2 away win against Swiss FC Sion, which I guess is a decent result and put Ajax in a good place ahead of the rematch next week.
Twente gave a disappointing game against Azerbaijani top team, Qarabag. They lost 1-0 at home, so will need to try extra hard in the 2nd leg. But maybe I'm being a bit too harsh on Twente. Qarabag are not push-overs, they made it to the Champions League League phase last year and even advanced to the play-offs (got eliminated by Newcastle).

AZ Alkmaar continues its winning streak. Taking full advantage of its opponent being reduced to 10 men early in the match, AZ Alkmaar secured a victory on the road against Fortuna Sittard, handing its opponent its first loss of the season. With this win, AZ Alkmaar raised its point total to 9. It’s safe to say they dominated the match.

Qarabag has been bad recently and I was surprised at that Twente outcome because they were suppose to win especially with the progress the Netherland teams has been making in this competition.

As for the Eredivisie, Alkmaar shocked me yesterday as I expected them to fumble there usual way but they actually won. Then for today we have Feyernoord and PSV playing today and I hope they get wins and PSV should stop this there unpredictable game they are having.

Heerenveen lost to PEC Zwolle. I find it absurd that Heerenveen, which went undefeated in the first two weeks, lost to such a weak opponent. Losing 3-0 in a home game when they were such heavy favorites makes absolutely no sense. With this victory, PEC Zwolle earned its first point.

In matchday 3, we've only seen six games played so far, with three outstanding matches to be played at later dates:
Twente Vs Telstar: 9th Sep
Ajax Vs Willem II: 15th Sep
NEC Vs Excelsior: To be confirmed

As for the game played, AZ won again. They are now a lone leader with all 3 wins and 9 points. PSV served Groningen their first loss of the season, and they have done it in a good style by beating them 5-1.
Feyenoord also delivered in an away game against weak Cambuur, and they also scored 5 of their own, but conceded 2.

The next weekend should bring some changes to the top of the table, as the 1st AZ is taking on the 2nd Go Ahead Eagles.

Here are the Champions League rivals for PSV and Feyenoord in the league phase:


It's not going to be easy for any of them. Apart from Viking (for both PSV and Feyenoord) and Shakhtar (for PSV), who will be underdogs. All other clubs are either higher rated or at least at a similar level.
But I guess participating in the league phase is a success in itself for Dutch clubs.

PSV will face FC Utrecht tomorrow in the fourth round of the Eredivisie. PSV is the defending champion and even dominated the league over the past few seasons. And they have won the Eredivisie title three times in a row. As for the start of this season PSV drew against Sittard in the first round. But they seemed to start showing their prowess again in the third round yesterday against FC Groningen, where they secured a very satisfying victory. In last season’s head-to-head matches PSV also performed well against FC Utrecht by winning both encounters one at home and even one on the road albeit by a one-goal margin. So I personally believe that this upcoming match will be a serious challenge for PSV to demonstrate their prowess this season by delivering a better performance than last season against Utrecht. And I’m confident that PSV’s winning mentality will lead them to a convincing victory even while playing at Galgenwaard Stadium.

Utrecht is definitely underperforming this season so far. They've earned only 1 point in 4 games, which places them in the relegation zone.
I expected them to put up a better fight against PSV, but they got outclassed and lost 6-1.

Ajax also scored a decisive 4-0 win over Telstar, while Feyenoord drew 2-2 against Den Haag at home.

The next weekend round is looking very exciting. Feyenoord will be playing away against NEC (3rd place last season), while Ajax will be hosting PSV at home.

You might not be the starter of this thread but, you’ve surely kept it updated and active for discussions with your updates on scores and teams in the league this season. Casper don’t seem to have being active in over 2years.

I just noticed the thread still reads 23/24, being the seasons it was last updated. Wouldn’t it be nice to start a new thread for the Eredivisie if this thread title can’t be updated…, just a thought.

They did or it looked like they would when they started the scoring before PSV took over and just wouldn’t stop scoring, ending the game at 6:1.

I was thinking of creating a new thread about a year ago and asked around for opinions, but people seemed to prefer to stick to this one, so I never went with that.
I'm just posting here out of habit, since there's still some activity here and since it's showing up in my watchlist,

Didn’t notice that thread until you mentioned and while it doesn’t do no harm to post here or keep it active while the current season thread would run concurrently, it would have being really nice if the date of the season didn’t read 23/24, it feels so backward. Not being the starter of the thread presents some difficulty to make any changes but, I doubt the mods would see any reason to lock the thread, that’s unnecessary.
