I agree if you compare that Japan and Korea are not as good as European teams, but aren't we here discussing the Asian Cup and not the World Cup?
So it's unethical to compare the continents of asia and europe unless you are in the world cup thread, if you follow the 2002 world cup for sure you will find how japan was able to advance to the round of 16 at that time and while korea make surprised for everyone by being in the semifinals, in my opinion There are a lot of great Asian players nowadays who are able to compete with European players so you shouldn't say that Asia is long lagging behind in terms of football, besides if you say Asian people have no interest in football, you should do your research again before you say it.

If there was no interest and craze for football in Asia, we would never be having the Asian cup.  Tournaments like these will give a lot of boost to the Asian teams and in the coming years, we may see the Asian teams giving tough competition to the European and the American teams.

Yeah, i also remember the 2002 world cup and it was one of the best world cup for the Asians. Thoroughly enjoyed the performance of the host nations Japan & Korea in that world cup.

I thought you two were joking when mentioned the Korea team in the 2002 world cup, talking about how great the Korean team is. Did you watch and know how controversial the matches between Korea vs Italy and Korea vs Spain? Korea today is a great team, don't get me wrong. Korea today is a mile different compared to Korea in 2002. But back then at 2002 world cup, Korea's level was below both Italy and Spain, I mean way below so they have to use a lot of dirty tricks, advantages in home or even accused of bribing the ref to win those matches, against Italy and Spain. Agree with what you say, because we are here discussing the AFC now, this is not going to be good when compared to others because there is no reference to compare this in the AFC.
As for the quality of players, there are actually a lot of players who are in Europe's top leagues and it's true that players from Asia can also compete. One concrete example now is the EPL Top Score this season, which was achieved by one of them being a player from Asia and one from Asia. again Salah who incidentally is an Egyptian player whose country is located on two continents, namely Asia and Africa as well.

Recently we have some good quality in Asian soccer but still it's very long way to go for them because here most of the countries are had issues in their domestic setup very few countries are going through their domestic setup but still it needs good experience and academies for having better results.

Currently, in quality African nations are much better than Asia as they are exporting too many players in UEFA and having good amount in their pockets which are increasing their setup and domestic setup and here we have only three or four countries which are having things for sending players to UEFA which is good place for experience and money for both player and country if they are able to set up things for this then surely it's going to help them in much better way.

My analysis was based upon the results where South Korea defeated Italy in the round of 16 and later defeat a strong Spain team in the quarterfinals of 2002 world cup.  I did not take into account the drama which was created after these two matches. Well, if the Korea both wins were fixed, then why did they lose to Germany in the semi finals. My point is that even if they cheated to reach the Semi-finals, you need to be a good team to beat Italy and Spain even with the help of umpires.

We will be having the 18th edition of the AFC Asian cup in 2023 which means that its been quite a long time since we are having this tournament but Asia have failed to produce big teams. Japan is the exception of course but the rest of the teams need a lot of improvement in their skills. They have won the title four times and they stand out among all the teams.

In 2002, Spain and Italy squads were very strong. I don't think the Korean team has beaten Spain and Italy just by cheating. Korea played well, luck helped them. Since it is not proven that Korea cheated, I do not support it. However, compared to the team of 2002, the current Korean team is very organized and strong. Indonesia continues to improve itself in the field of football and I still strongly believe that Indonesia will achieve a big goal. The Asian Cup in 2023 is the first step for Indonesia to realize its goals. Many support and encourage Indonesian football to be like other Asian countries that are taken into account.

Not only are North Korea, Japan, Australia unquestionable in the Asian Cup, but Iran, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Qatar, Vietnam and Thailand can certainly match them in this tournament. The revival of the team that is below the team that is considered to have a chance to win must also be considered.

Yeah, we are discussing 2002 event which was 20 years back and is no more relevant. Korea team has come out as a good team and the current team is far better than the one we had in 2002. This is good development from many Asian countries as they are doing their best for quality of soccer because now they are understanding importance of this game. Korea and Qatar are well-developed countries, so they can invest big amounts which are good for the better future of this game, with this we can improve talent academies and facilities for many more other countries as well.

In last two decades we have good things happening in China, Japan and Korea because these are having some big investments in clubs level after them Middle East countries are also trying to fill space because now their youths are also having some good interest, and they want to give their best for their country as well.

I think it would be wrong to say that there are no quality players here because indeed if we explore further now there are a lot of quality players who will play in this AFC and even of them now playing in the EPL like Minamino who plays for Liverpool (even though he has now gone to Monaco ), Tomiyasu who played at Arsenal, Son at Tottenham, Hwang Hee-chan at Wolves and Iraqi youth player Zidane Iqbal who played at MU.
They are a line of names that are great enough to decorate for the Asian Cup now.

So yes, I personally look at this Indonesian team even though they have been trained by great coaches but it will still be difficult to penetrate the final match in this tournament.

As an Indonesian and Football fans,  I think the chance of they doing it consistently in long term is very small , the team performance are very dependent on how the local competition going, and quality of the competition depend on how the federation handle it. And there are a lot of corruption in the federation and in the competition in the past years, we have a good year in 2017 with Luis Milla but in only 1 year the federation kick him off, for some absurd reasons.

Even though Indonesia has made changes but still, if the Indonesian squad is still full of local Indonesian players, it will still be difficult to win the title. Does anyone know why Asian teams such as Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan are part of UEFA? These countries are either fully or mostly within the Asian continent, so I don't understand why they are a part of UEFA rather than AFC. Many of these teams would find it easier to qualify for the world cup, if they are included in the AFC. And the same can be said about Russia and Belarus as well, since these two countries are considered as untouchables by the UEFA board. And from 2026 onwards, AFC will be having a greater number of slots for the World Cup.
