Choices: Gamble or Help the poor ?

In order to understand the psychology of gamblers, i have decided to come up few questions for discussions, and here is the first one.

Suppose that you are a responsible gambler who have allocated a certain portion of money to gamble each month. Now you came across a poor person/family who is in urgent need of money. Will you quit the gambling for that month and give the allocated money to the poor family or will you prefer to gamble as you can't live without gambling ?

Will you quit the gambling for that month and give the allocated money to the poor family or will you prefer to gamble as you can't live without gambling ?

In my case yes, but we see quite a few people in this same forum with problems to control their gambling behavior, going over the budget repeatedly. So I doubt that these people would stop gambling to help others.

First they will have to solve the problem they have and only when they are well they can move on to help others.

The question is a bit of a trap, because responsible gamblers will have no problem doing it, the problem is gamblers with compulsive behaviors.

I'm not sure what I'll do when I encounter such a situation. Being into gambling my mind will surely suggest to gamble and help with the winning amount. I know that the outcome isn't positive, but the mind will surely have this thought. I pray god that such scenario should not happen with me, because at that situation if I spend and loss then it'll keep me under guilty.

I will first gamble and when I win I will help and if I find out I have no luck, I might just give the rest to help. It would have been a big amount if I will win.

But seriously if it's an urgent need, there is no question I will hand in some funds as I always do to family and friends. Everyone has experienced the time when you have nothing and are helpless, it's the worse feeling.

The answer would depend on how the other person urgently needed the money. However, I would rather choose to help them but not to the point that I'll be giving the my whole gambling allocation for a whole month.

I can try to provide them with some financial assistance which is at least the amount that I can provide without compromising the whole gambling activity for a month.

Still, If the family that requires my assistance is somehow who is a relative of mine or even a friend or love ones then the choice would be obvious to halt my gambling activity and help them as much as I can especially if the needed help is urgent such as an emergency.

As per the OP, he is asking if you will leave the gambling to help the poor, and in this case, you people will play gamble and help on the condition if you won. So, this type of help is condition based as you will probably help with the winning amount but not willing to sacrifice your current amount allocated for gambling.

Anyways, if I found anyone in trouble, especially in my family or neighbors, i will definitely quit gambling for a month and help the needy.

I'd probably split it, maybe depending on the amount I'd spend then. If it was really low then I might as well just give it but if not, then yes a split. I wouldn't say that I'm an addict but I would prioritize myself, even if you consider it over helping others.

It's not so much a trap question rather the answers pretty much force the reasoning in black and white only. If you can't give it, then you're an addict, if you can, then you're not when in reality there can be a few reasons for not helping people. Not wanting to help does not equate to being an addict in gambling imo.

I'm not a gambling addict so it's not a problem for me to stop gambling for a while.
Maybe I will help a family in need, but maybe I won't. It depends. I'm not that generous and would help if I know more about the poor person/family and why they are in a bad situation. I wouldn't help people, who are alcoholics, drug addicts, gambling addicts, criminals, etc. because giving money to such people wouldn't help them at all. It would only make their situation worse.
The dilemma between gambling and charity isn't an actual dilemma, because most gamblers would simply choose both, I guess.

The question is simple but the answer is difficult for many of us. Especially here there is a big difference between those who are addicted to gambling and who are not. An addicted gambler's mind is abnormal. They give highest priority to gambling.

Those who have financial support and are not addicted to gambling will definitely be interested in helping those poor people. But there can be some exceptions here. Because there are many addicted gamblers who are emotionally driven and always try to help the poor.

I'll skip that month not to gamble and will give the money to this person who is in need. It's just a little sacrifice to skip gambling, but the decision you made can touch other people's lives and it's priceless.

Plus, I dont want to be put into a situation where I am in his/her shoes then no one is helping me. Remember the saying "its better to give than to receive" it feels good to help.

It all depends on the prevailing situation, if I see other people who need it more for their survival, of course I will leave a little of my money to help people in need, but my principle will never give cash to people who are in need I will give them a little knowledge and I will also teach them to make money online, because if we only give money, it is certain that the money will run out quickly.

Why would I gamble when I know a family is in need an of the money t just use to gamble monthly, if the money is enough for what they needed it for, I can prefer to not gamble for that time.

But in reality, I use just little amount of money to gamble, so I would still be able to afford to gamble even if I help the family. I use gamble to make fun, but if I lose the money, I just only lose it without helping the poor family, that is absurd and not good even if I gamble with it and won.

This is kinda tricky to begin with, it's about the question of morals here, trying to help someone vs you enjoying the money for your oneself.

So I guess for their is no right or wrong answer, really depends on the individual. If he/she thinks that it is worth to help those poor family then so be it, do what you think is the best for you.

And then maybe if you still have some money, then continue to gamble. Or there could be individual not willing to help, not because they don't want to, but for them they also have problems and they don't reach to others specially if it involves money.

I will take a middle way from that thing. I will give some money to the poor family and then use the rest for another thing. I will not give whole of my money but give them some of my money probably enough. In my opinion if you shall help them but you didn't need to give whole of money for them and sometime you need your money. It's not always about gambling but you must have some reserved funds in your wallet. You can use small amounts of money for that thing.
In this case anyone has their own personal opinion.

Honestly, I won't quit. I can give some to them but not everything that I set aside for entertainment. It's not that I can't live without gambling, it's just that I can choose to pay myself first using money that I worked for.

It would be interesting to know if those who said they will quit for a month would keep giving away their money to every poor person they meet. In most places, we encounter many of them on a daily/weekly basis.

Why not give some and not all of them?  I guess all of us wanted to help someone, but for ordinary individuals like the rest of us, we can give whatever we can. It doesn't mean your whole budget for a gambling session. Maybe 50% to them, and then you still have the remaining 50% that you can play and enjoy and, who knows, maybe you will get a positive karma and win because of your good deeds.

I will use myself as a case study, I have my monthly plan and divisions which is; after my monthly salary I structure my funds where I should  also send my charity account, savings, family account and miscellaneous account.
The charity account goes to anyone who urgently needs help maybe I know their cases are critical then I will help with some percentage.
While my family account is only for myself and
my kids, so anything related my household my wife is in control, then the miscellaneous account I can get any random amount but wouldn't exceed $20 in our local currency to gamble.

At point of gambling if i should see such cases I will gamble then I request for the person details to help him or her through my charity account. While my savings account is no go area 😂

Like you said "responsible" gambler and not a compulsive or addicted gambler, sure why not? We rise by lifting others. Because there's no assurance that the money I've set aside for that month to gamble would yield something if the game I bet on doesn't play, but I know that of a certainty I've blessed a life. To me, that's the surest gamble and a worthy one at that.

I will stop gambling for the month and give the money that should have been allocated to gambling to those poor families because I know they need the money more than I use it for gambling. I could have gambled another time for fun and so I decided to give them the money. Gambling is not my top priority and is just for fun so even if I am a responsible gambler, it won't be a problem. But maybe some gamblers will continue to gamble and give all their winnings to the poor family because they think they can give that money to help others who need it.

In my case, I can do that I have similar situation in the past and it's for my relatives, but it will depend on my relationship with that poor family if they are just acquaintances I just give a portion and ask them to ask for help to their relatives if they have relatives but if there is none I could give them my allocation it's ok to help but we should not deprive ourselves of something that we've allocated or else some people will abuse you, it's ok to help your relatives because it's your family and family should help each other.
