Such a change is certainly possible. It has happened many times in the past. A few years ago, many other coins were in the top 20. Some will certainly remain in the top 20, while others will lose their position. However, you cannot predict which coins will stay and which will go.

I am guessing SOL and even Tron could drop out. But i would have to predict what coins are going to be replacing them in top 20. Not newcomers that would fall in top 20 but might as well be coins just below them, new bottom 2 on top 20 list could be Toncoin and Cosmos, unless there's something else, a new unknown black horse rising from the bottom of top 300+ marketcap. Like shiba did, from the bottom to top.

Yeah nearly at every halving cycle comes with Bitcoin bull run that affects altcoins. And everytime some coins leave top ranks.
I think Shiba may drop out of it if not enough meme coin speculation happens.
I also think we may see Solana or Avax to move more than others. They may drop to lower ranks.
I think huobi may have issues in future so huobi token as well.
Tron doesn't deserve its current position and I expect it to go like 5-10 ranks down.

There's no such thing about certain or being permanent even if we do talk about Bitcoin on which in every bull run and based up on overall the years of experience then there's no way that you couldnt tell that everything

could really be replacen in a snap which it isnt really that surprising that those current rank #20's would really be going down on next bull run which does have been seen back in the past too.

This is why always expect that those kind of change ranks could really happen and there's no assurance that it would really be still the same on the next bull

No one knows this, but if Solana does not recover, then SOL is the first contender for the departure from the top 20. Also, it is not known how SHIB will behave, will large investors try to support it further, or will switch to some other meme coin. In my opinion, one should not expect any miracles from SHIB in the next market cycle.

The position change in the top 20 is very possible to happen, it is something not surprising. If there is hype on some coins (outside of the top 20), then they gradually reach the top 20, then there should be a change in the position of the top 20. Also, if among the top 20 coins, there are coins to lose the hype because of bad issues. The coins may drop out of the top 20 positions, too. But it is difficult to determine which coins to experience this. However, I assume meme coins are possible to experience this if there is no longer hype on meme coins and Elon never tweets about it again.

Probably they only climb up the ranks because of hypes but once it dies down, their ranks can also fall again and the old top crypto can go back on their previous positions but there are top coins too who can go bad or can turn into a scam same with luna where they can lose their positions permanently.

Coins that are above them are now going to move in their position. New coins that are sincere (non hyped) may take some time to climb the top ranks but it's worth it because they can sustain their positions. I think cmc ranking can change at anytime depending on the coins performance, and doesn't only change right after every bull run.

SOL will always stay on here. Couldn't hold myself to not buying SOL on current price as it's already below 95% from it's ATH before. When people leaving the solid project, thats greatest opportunity to buy and hodl it for long term

I agree, though I've spoken about the ones that have been hodling their positions since a very long time. However, there were also Peercoin, Namecoin, and if I'm not wrong, Litecoin (LTC) was holding 2nd position till ETH came into existence.

The position is not permanent for any particular project as you said, it is a bear market and some of the top projects are going through the same pressure as any other project in cmc. So it is very likely that some of them will not retain their current position except the market reverse and the projects maintain their market capitalization.

How about Doge and XRP?
SHIB and Doge are the same, they are meme coins. If no hype on meme coins anymore, they may drop their positions.
While XRP, this coin still didn't fix the problem with SEC. If there is bad news related to the case with SEC, it may gradually drop its position.

There's always one or a couple of projects who could really make it to the top rankings when bull run approaches which is  something a very standard thing to happen.This is why on the current ranking that we are seeing, we cant really still make out assurance that it would really be on the same name if another bull run would hit up but of course it would be excluding Bitcoin itself which is something that cant really be avoided

If you mention the top 20, it is including BTC, ETH, USDT, USDC, BUSD, BNB, ADA, MATIC, DOT. Do you think these coins will be out of the top 20 in the next bullrun season? IMO, surely there will be more than 3 of those coins to survive in the top 20. I believe BTC, ETH, and stable coins stay at least, no reason for these coins to drop out. These coins have different concepts, they also don't compete each other. In addition, I am sure the developers/teams of the top 20 coins are experienced enough. They won't get many investors and won't get big market caps if they don't have a good experience. People won't trust unexperienced developers/teams.

I always trust bitcoin, ethereum and bnb to retain their top 20 positions for sure, guaranteed (and if you want to consider stable ones then them too) but all others are open hunting season. Yeah, that usually happens, in 2017's bull run, there are a lot of projects, very good one that is in the top 10-20. But during the bear market, some of them went -90% and was not able to recover in time and when we reach the bull run in 2022, they are either dead or just didn't get the support of their investors just like years ago.

So again, it's cyclical, it's hard to maintain position in top because the market is very competitive, only good projects like the obvious, BTC and ETH could remain, while the rest, their could be a lot of changed in the positions. And yeah, if there is project that offers another alternative to the crypto that you mentioned, they could be relegated down below and replace by new one in the future.

CMC has undergone a lot of modifications since 2013 up till the present day (2022). Many coins that are now unknown to me were once in the top 20 CMC. Now, where are they? Lose value or disappear into thin air?

The historical snapshot you provided, it appears that the top coins on CMC are changed annually. This indicates that towards next year, we'll witness altcoins that have topped another, but one thing stands out in all of this: Bitcoin still reigns supreme as the king of cryptocurrencies (number one)

If the position of the coin in CMC changes, then it's value do also change. Either it drop or it increases. So a concern like this can still be related on the coins that he hold inside his portfolio. Coins who are on the top 5 or even the top 10 are for sure will remain in their positions but those who will likely change are the coins who are on the 11th spot up to the 20th.

Maybe some of the coins above the top 20th spot are going to enter when the bull run comes but anyway, you are right that it's not about the ranking that matters because some who climb the ranks are only the coins who are being hyped up and these coins doesn't eve have any strong fundamentals or solid use cases.

Top 20 ranking is mostly dominated by coins with sustainable ecosystem but that does not eliminate the chances of dump, Luna coin did is and Solana is doing same right now.

Don't think so, coins that have reached their full potential will not want to lose the market trust of investors, so, at that, there will make a sustainable plan that will help them not to get replaced by new coins no matter how high potential those coins are, there may be a possible drawback for some coins but the market is involved in a lot of crisis in the later part of last year, and that has helped the top coins to prepare for the journey ahead since 2024 halving is around the corner.

From the top 20, sooner or later, all PoW cryptocurrencies will leave, except Bitcoin. This has been going on for quite some time. If you remember 2013, then the top 20 consisted of only PoW coins, but now the trend has changed and all large projects choose PoS model or switch to it.

I am not sure but sometimes this comes to my mind as it has been in the market for years now.

I'm actually looking at matic, doge and Solana and if time not taking we might find BNB as well but due to they are global leading exchange would likely remain. For instance, in the past few years i have been closely watching over NEO and EOS these two coin where the best of all time and i think have also been among of the 20 top altcoin but after which i can't find them in the top anymore and i don't think there is something productive about them, i barely see anyone posting about those project or even a thread talking about these coin. Although EOS managed to remain among the top 40 altcoin while NEO slide down to rank 70.

For the fact that,  any project that is operating in the top 20 on coin market capitalization will build an enabling ecosystem that will not allow them to miss out of the bull run unless those projects that already have a pre planned dump mechanism. Top 20 ranking is mostly dominated by coins with sustainable ecosystem but that does not eliminate the chances of dump, Luna coin did is and Solana is doing same right now.

I believe that building an ecosystem is not that easy, which means it is going to take a long time before we could see them do it. Top 20 is also a lot bigger than we could imagine for such a thing, it just doesn't make sense to make it that way.

I believe that the best thing to do would be just focusing on how we could do much more with so little and hope it works. Top 20 means it is already a giant and worths millions of dollars, tens of millions of dollars even, for some even hundreds, and for a few billions! There is this logic where you are going to be forced to think of it like something that is "fighting" or competing or whatever else you want to name it similar to that. Because the market is filled with coins who are trying to be as high as possible, and there are also situations that hurt some of the projects as well.

This means that some of them will get better by working hard and doing some great things while others will go down because they face some troubles. This causes the ranks to change, not just at the top but everywhere and that is why a coin you get could go up high or could go down and you need to be careful about which one you pick.

Having trustworthy projects like eth and bnb would make sure that not only you will go up, but you will go up more than bitcoin probably. Not by a lot of course, but in a world where bitcoin goes up x5, eth could go up x6 and bnb could go up x7 which is not a huge difference, but it's still not a bad one at all.

It's also smart to diversify your portfolio, that way you would make a good profit while also protecting your portfolio in case anything happens to just one of them. Not likely that it would be any big trouble for these big three, but if you could also spend a little bit on other small stuff, just like %10 or so, that would be protecting you at least.

New projects could, but the old ones are there too. For example bnb and eth survived 2 huge ones, and we could even say ETH survived a third one technically speaking. Which means that there is a choice for you, will you go out and search for the one that will go into top 20, or will you pick one that is in top 20 already and stay in top 20?

The question is easy to answer for me, I rather pick something in top 20 right now and keep going with that, and if I can do that then it won't cause me any headache. NEO and EOS were at the top of the hype in 2017-2018, at that time, in terms of the level of hype, they were about the same as Polygon or something similar now. Even here on the forum there were heated discussions about these projects. Then something went wrong and they started losing investors and support fast. EOS was with the claim that it would take Ethereum's place. The project was extremely ambitious, but the plans weren't destined to come to fruition.

I wouldn't really even say just rank 2 or below, because I trust bnb as well, for me those are the top three and even in some situations those stablecoins pass some of them, it doesn't really mean that they really passed it, because it won't give you any profits, you can't have USDT and hold it and make profit, maybe you could stake it, but the price won't go up.

So to me btc, eth and bnb will always be top three. I have different opinion. Crypto in its early days suffered a lot of manipulation, as well as a lot of early days projects weren't serious, for example Dogcoin, we know why it was created and what happened next, most of other projects were the same or just a Bitcoin clone coin.These days we have different style of projects, in addition the Crypto market stability is increasing by the time, so I think many projects from the top 20 will manage to keep their positions as long as they are serious and constructive. I think ETH won't be moved from that second position for a while, it may look like they could get moved out of there at times because of the situations they are in, but that is an unlikely situation and I think that was just in the past. Correct point , Stable coins is hindering other coins to move forward and maintain Bitcoin and Ethreum stands in 1-2 position , even Binance coin (BNB) cannot stand hitting rank 3 because of stable coin like Tether(USDT) so it will take a long years before other altcoin make it to rank 2 or even 3rd .

i wouldn't put too much hope to that implementation though, there has been many proposed implementation to solve the high gas fee as well as decreasing the total supply, despite the fact that they've successfully keep the total supply in balance with the burning rates, they failed miserably when it comes to keeping the high gas fee not too much high.
moreover speaking about stablecoin, if they only generated more when there is reserve, technically it isn't unlimited though, it limited to the amount of the money in reserve and since it retaining the $1, its basically just digitalized version of all those reserved money but i might be wrong.

there's still no guarantee that the sharding will succeeds, considering the fact that there will be 64 shard chains still a long way to go though the deployment will definitely take places at single swoop if i'm not mistaken.
currently even the 2nd layer solution to take the burden of processing all the transactions off the ethereum blockchain become double edged swords because the batch submitting is so massive that it also make the fee rise.
