Mexico has taken the lead as Quinones opened the scoreline on the 9th minutes of the game. This is the first early goal that has been scored in the world cup since 2006. South Africa should be careful with their defense to avoid conceding more goals from the host side. Mexico is dominating the game and winning possession but things might still turn around for South Africa later in the game.

Mexico's quick goal gave them more confidence despite South Africa's resistance but it didn't make Mexico's determination slacken and they were still in control at the end of the first half.

The second half is likely to be interesting but if Mexico want to secure the 3 points then they need to be a little more aggressive and improve their finishing because they had plenty of chances but the finishing was a little unsatisfactory for me. There is another option to play a bit safer but it won't be effective because South Africa rely on their pace and if they are given space to get into a rhythm then it could be dangerous for Mexico in the second half.

What an awful game so far. We havent seen nothing especially from South Africa that is just lost. Mexico got lucky and took the lead and mostly just controls the game and dosent attack much. Expected a lot more from this game honestly but we havent seen anything so far. I don't think that South Africa defense is strong from what I'm seeing in this game. Their only savior is their goalkeeper who has denied Mexico quite a good number of goals. Mexico is just penetrating their defense any how. A lot of goal attempt but they could only score one and the Mexicans deserve that goal.

I am expecting more goals in this game if South Africa continues to play like this. Their goalkeeper cannot save them all the time and may have to concede more goals with the poor defense from his teammates. The first half has ended and I have some observations which I believe anyone else might have made. I will say that this year's world cup has shown real improvement and the technology too. The referee's view is awesome and shows where the referee's focus was during a particular action and I think it will help to regulate the use of some foul words by players because the referee will be facing you directly with the camera too. Again, the issue of delays has been taken care of with the 5 seconds delay time for throw ins and goal kicks.

There's a high spirit in the pitch from the both sides despite the first ten minutes goal by Quinones. This first game is interesting and attracted many viewers around the world. I think that south Africa still has the opportunity to score but Mexico still holds the biggest chance to win.

Everyone should know that this game won’t be easy for either sides, it’s the opening match and there will be much tension and stress to win. Personally, I will avoid betting on winning or draw, but I will pick number of goals that we will expect at least a goal on each halves.
Mexico has a better team and used to show us always great performance in previous world cup versions, in the other side, South Africa isn’t an easy opponent and they will do everything to get a positive result or at least a draw.

30 minutes gone, Mexico's approach seems too aggressive, and they are now leading by 1-0 as well. My prediction and bet are also already won through Julian Quinones score goal in the 9th minute of the match. Still, enough action is remaining in this game, but Mexico has a good chance of winning due to their strong offense and good defense. After winning the first bet, I am now expecting 2 more goals from both sides because this match is having good action, and both can score more goals.

Even the South African attack is looking not balanced, but they can do better in the remaining game. Currently, over 2.5 is having odds of @2.2. These are encouraging, because in the first game of the event, many things can still happen.

There are already big differences between the players of the two teams. Mexico has more experienced players, while South Africa has slightly less quality players. We feel this in the game as well. Mexico seems to be having a comfortable match and may continue to do so in the second half. South Africa, on the other hand, can do nothing but defend and try to score.

There is still a lot of time left in the game, so it cannot be considered a weakness of South Africa. South Africa is passing the ball well enough. There is not much excitement in the game yet. After half time, there will be more tension between the two teams. Because trying to score more goals at the beginning can have the opposite effect. There is a win-lose game, so one team has to lose. Although Mexico has a higher chance of winning here, South Africa cannot be neglected yet.

It’s already halftime and even though there isn’t another goal I think Mexico are the better team in this match as we can all see.

South Africa’s defense isn’t impressive in this game and I don’t think the 9th minute goal from Mexico was an `unfortunate goal at the beginning of a normal game’ rather I don’t think this South African team would produce some incredible performance in this World Cup but nevertheless this is football and we can expect anything.

Did you guys know there will be a bunch of new rules introduced for this tournament, other than extending the number of participating countries to 48?

There are some interesting new changes, some of which will hopefully make the game smoother and fairer, like a semi-automated offside detection technology, or multiple new countdown rules to prevent players from intentionally stalling the game to win more time (e.g. countdowns for goal-kicks and throw-ins and for substitutions).

There are some I don't quite like, especially extra "hydration" breaks in the middle of each half, which are to last 3 minutes. The official reasoning is the health of players, but the real motivation is to make extra room for advertisers by giving them more commercial breaks. I don't know what the forecasted temperatures for June are, but I don't imagine they are so high to justify extra interruptions to the game.

What's happening so far is a little bit out of expectations, and it is a show that no country is coming as an onlooker in this world cup. South African didn't concede more goals aside from the earlier goal. But I wouldn't call that luck for Mexico, as both teams were given the level playing ground. It was South Africa that made itself caught off guard.

I think this game is pretty much decided already and you can clearly see the difference in quality. Mexico looks like the much better team, while South Africa barely has any control in midfield. It's hard to see things changing much in the second half. If anything, Mexico is more likely to score another goal or two ...

I'm also expecting more goals from Mexico. We see them as strong contenders in this group. The other teams in the group are Korea and Czech Republic. South Africa will probably finish last in this group because they don't seem fully prepared for the World Cup. We can say that both Korea and Czech Republic are strong teams. It's considered one of the groups where every team is evenly matched.

Mexico vs South Africa, this was not a game I anticipated would be the start of the World Cup. That goal was a costly mistake from the defender, who was not aware of his surrounding while receiving the ball. The intensity from the game was quite a tough one and what should be expected of the World Cup competition.

Both teams are putting on their best and it would be a lovely experience that more goals are scored in today's game. African fans should be in high anticipation and hype for the game already, it is the biggest competition in the football World.

Yes, of course, football is the biggest competition in the world. And it is one of the most beautiful and exciting games. Mexico is a strong team. South Africa is a little less strong than Mexico. But their attacks like long pressing, and quick counter attacks are worth watching. The opening match of the World Cup 2026 has started with the touch of two strong teams. What a mess asSphephelo Sithole has been sent out of the field for stopping a goal opportunity by bringing down his opponent close to South Africa 18 yard box. South Africa his playing the game with one man than four minutes after the second half kicked off.

Mexico is currently leading but they've not been much creative in the final third. Their only goal of the match came as a mistake from South Africa defense which was obviously avoidable. If Mexico doesn't improve and begin to convert their possession to goals in the second half, they might end up not winning.
South Africa still has a good chance of coming back in the game but to do that, they'll have to stop Mexico from dominating the game like they did in the first half. The second half is about to kick off, hopefully, we're going to see more goals than what we saw in the first half.

Anytime Nigeria play match with other national team, x will be full if memes that day but I woke this morning to see them but there wasn't any available, that tells you that the match was more like a meet and greet. It was nothing serious, even Portugal were excited to meet Nigeria. The atmosphere wasn't that tense but in Nigerians mind I know they wanted to win Portugal so they can use it to do their usual e wars between countries and for physical argument.

I noticed we had less turnout from the players, some of the players that were supposed to represent us didn't come or perhaps they weren't given an invitation for the match. If most of them were present, maybe we could use that opportunity to measure our standards in the world cup. I don't think this guys that represent us in that match will be able to cross the group stage in all sincerity, they did play but even with the friendship, it's all there like they can't go far.

It was competitive in that first half though. Adams physically bullied Inacio and Dias, equalized, the Nigerian bench erupted. That is not what you see in friendlies, when no one is concerned.

The reason it LOOKED like a meet and greet is because Martinez pulled nine starters at halftime. So the second half was really a different team. Playing like the first two players in the first 11 of your team. You should not make any judgment on that.

Osimhen was not snubbed. He was in a shoddy club at Galatasaray so Chelle rested him. Lookman? Atletico literally said "NO" to Nigeria, they wanted him rested. Two midfielders were not able to board the plane as the NFF failed to arrange their Schengen visas.
