Recently, I came to read this news

https://protos.com/spanish-police-rescue-crypto-investor-kidnapped-on-holiday/

The first thing that came to my mind after reading this was that one should not talk about his crypto investments with strangers or friends as it can pose various risks. If you are active on forums like bitcointalk and involved in trades, you should not give information which can help others relate to your identity.

Never disclose your crypto holdings to anyone, including family members. As Elon Musk recently tweeted, "Trust no one". The Syrian crypto investor was very lucky that Spanish police were able to come to his rescue in good time. Things could have escalated real quick if he had failed to rise the 1m euro.

Not only are cryptocurrencies valuable assets, but we should also stop showing off our assets to strangers. Because society is full of dangers, don't trust someone too easily, keeping secrets is the way to keep us and our loved ones safe.

I don't think we have to be so extreme that even our loved ones can't believe it. When you don't trust anyone, don't expect anyone to believe you and your life will become lonely and boring. Money is not everything in this life, if there is money without family, without love, without comfort, that money also becomes meaningless. When you die, you can't take money with you, so don't live in an extreme that only knows about money.

Anonymous is a word that fits those of us who invest in bitcoin because the nature of secrecy is important to close loopholes for people to take unexpected actions, in my country if you have a large amount of bitcoin there will be tax workers who will come to the house they will give warning when you do not try to pay taxes in accordance with applicable regulations. Even though this is not a robbery scenario but being too exposed will attract a lot of attention, which is why it is important to try to be more anonymous in investing.

Although I doubt that other people can take the bitcoins that we have with the concept of robbery outside of technology, security is one of the considerations that needs to be kept anonymous and is much safer for those of us who are in investment. Don't be too flashy and be careful with all the possibilities that can happen.

Not everyone care about anonymity and secret of their investment in Bitcoin. They talk a lot about what they are doing and they are really ready to get more risk from malicious threats online and curious eyes in physical activities.

It is not good if you walk around, talk about your Bitcoin investment, and say you are fine because you have good practice on Internet, security for your devices. If more people know that you have bitcoin, you will have more risk from their curiosity.

You won't have to pay tax if you don't sell your bitcoins with profit. If you buy it in 2013 or 2016 and only hold your coins till today, you don't have to pay tax, because you don't cash your coins out to turn it to profit in cash.

In this day and age in which everyone is too keen to share everything they do and hear, it is critical to not share at all that you invest in the market of cryptocurrencies.

After all even if the adoption of bitcoin and altcoins has grown considerably since the creation of this market, at the same time there is still a lot of ignorant people out there which may believe that just by virtue of investing in this market you are a millionaire, and if the wrong person learns of this you could face an enormous amount of problems.

Keeping your crypto investment identity secret is very important, so that what happened to some investors that exposed their secret will not happen to you because bad people always get angry with those that are doing well in their crypto investment. I believe, many crypto users has learned their lesson from other people mistakes that made them to vow never to allow anybody to know the password to their wallets or Bitcointalk account because it will endangered their account or money when they expose such identity to their brothers or sisters. Bitcoin is very popular in my environment but I don't let people know that I have idea on Bitcoin investment because all eyes will be on me in the environment.

The case cited in the OP is exaggerated because it is about someone who:

Quote
ran a Dubai-based crypto fund

In other words, someone who has a lot more money than the average forum user. Still, it is important not to tell anyone that you have bitcoin or only people you would trust with your life. Even more so if you have it in a HW, it is much easier for them to take your holdings than it is for them to take the rest of your assets (if you have a house, shares or pension plans, they can't take them instantly).

I guess his spendings must have alerted the criminals that he's well to do or he must have spilled some secret about his wealth when under the influence of alcohol.

This is another thing that puts you in the bull's eye: to be seen spending a lot of money.

In my opinion, this applies to all forms of investment, and don't be too open, let alone know the nominal ownership. And if your friend just knows you're involved, I think that's fine because with this you can put a good explanation if your friend wants to be involved because it's kind of like you're doing the adoption individually.
but that doesn't mean you give advice because of your own initiative or invite your friends to get involved, because there is a risk of breaking up the friendship if your friend suffers a loss and your friend will blame you and this is highly not recommended apart from telling your nominal ownership, this is also not allowed allow.

It's because of two things for me (1) keep it a secret as much as possible to your family, because there's a high chance they will milk some money from you or even worst. (2) Keep it a secret from your social media friends, because you don't really know them all personally, you don't know who's gonna plan something bad just to get your cryptocurrency investment.

You don't really have to brag what you have just to be famous in whatever situation, or just because your friends are flexing their achievements in social media. Let them do theirs, and just do your thing as always.

~~snip~~
Of course I am as cautious as I need to be with Bitcoin investing. The reason I am so cautious is that Bitcoin is a completely legal offense in the country I live in. Because of which I have kept my own Bitcoin investment and hold without sharing my identity with any friends and no one knows. I think my future may be at risk if someone finds out about this bitcoin investment of mine. We have to flee our country and invest in bitcoins, otherwise if found out under the law then jail is sure. Therefore investing in Bitcoins must be done with certainty and fractions of Bitcoins invested must be kept secret.

It is possible he mentioned his business and crypto dealings to the criminals whom posed as friends earlier.
He was not with his wallet at the kidnap point, lest they'd have disposed him of his coins without trace. His friend may have a slim or full connection to the incident, being the source of the connection. I think he played very smart by not moving around with his wallets cos it would've been worse.Bitcoin investment  information must be kept very secret and treated with utmost caution as its not completely acceptable by some governments and criminals are readily in trail of digital  money investors

If we are on vacation somewhere else, it's better not to say anything if we have crypto/bitcoin because it can invite bad people to do something bad to us. We also do not know the circumstances around us because we are not in our home environment.

And even though we are in our neighborhood, we should not say that we own bitcoins and keep it for ourselves. Maybe we can tell our family about the bitcoins we have but we don't need to say how many. Better to keep it a secret from others than to have something like that man experience.

The first thing that came to my mind after reading this was that one should not talk about his crypto investments with strangers or friends as it can pose various risks. If you are active on forums like bitcointalk and involved in trades, you should not give information which can help others relate to your identity.
Partying together. I guess he accidentally spit out his investments, or his crypto-related business. Another one is that, one of the captors already has a past crime record. He trusted the wrong people I guess.

Now with regards to sharing sensitive information here, I've been in the forum for quite some time already, and I didn't shared any personal information or trades, or anything that might affect my privacy here. I mean why would you share personal information here in a platform where you don't know any user personally. I guess a gullible newbie who can easily get tricked is the one that might do it, but for those who've been in the crypto for a long time, they know that sharing information here is a no-no.

For me, I have told to some of my relatives that I'm holding some cryptocurrencies, but I never told them the total amount that I have. I just feel very uncomfortable to share with them the total portfolio that I got, and I guess just telling which coins are you holding is good already. For those who are holding huge amounts of cryptocurrencies, or even just a small amount, don't ever share it to other people because it might be a reason for them to make something bad to you like what the captors did to the investor in the article the OP shared.

Recently, I came to read this news

Definitely, when you talk that you have a lot of money but at the same time you move without security in dangerous areas, you should expect crime. Some people really easily call friend to strangers that they met minutes ago.
I read the article and I think first lesson from this accident is to learn whom to call your friend and whom to trust. And when you have a lot of money and talk about your investments and shares you hold, that's okay, if you are an retard influencer, you have to talk that kind of shit to attract people but you have to keep in mind that you need security with you cause you are already under the radar of criminals.

Boasting on social networks is becoming a disease of today's youth, let's not get caught up in those vanities and harm ourselves. But if it's wrong for you to hide it from your loved one because you're afraid they'll take your money, why speak ill of your loved one? Have they ever asked you for money or borrowed money from you and never returned it?

For my relatives, I will not hesitate to share because I earn money, I want them to be like me, and I also want them to make money from crypto. I will share my secrets with those closest to me in case something unexpected happens to me.

I think it's not even about Bitcoin, but about money in general.
The best advice I heard is to never tell people how much money you have/make, because they either will consider you poorer than them or richer and in both cases, they will think of you in the worse way.

OP. It is important to keep it private for the safety of our data.
In addition to the safety of personal data, this is also important to save the assets that we keep, even for the sake of other safety which is more useful because we never know what motive someone will do to us.

Not only regarding Bitcoin investment activities, including correct personal data on social media platforms also really needs to be kept confidential.
We must not accuse everyone of doing evil work for us, but we need to know that jealousy, envy that exists in a person's soul can move him to do evil work.

If silence can save us, why make a sound.

Some crypto investors are the architect of there own misfortune either by directly or indirectly revealing their wealth, one of the key feature of Bitcoin is it anonymity thus I don't know why a crypto investment that is originally being concealed will have to be exposed by the investor or hodler, of course the consequences such action will culminated to being a kidnapped, the bottom line here is that vital personal information related to any individual assets should be in secrecy and such individual should avoid boosting probably to impress friends and colleagues because of those friends might plan and plot kidnapping of their boastful collegue.

This kind of discrimination because lets say you tell it with your neiobohrs its either that if they knew that you are rich morethan them then they usually dragged you down or borrow money that they will not pay you, others also if they knew you are poorer than them they will not treat you right. Whether whats the purpose it is really best to keep it secret because of the situation right now that everyone is looking to anyone and mostly those bad guys finding a target.
