When the power you rely on is money, something you want to control can be successful as long as it can influence more people to do the same thing at one time. So this kind of thing can indeed be done successfully by certain entities.

For the example you gave, it might be possible to manipulate it, but until now I don't think that anything related to money can be manipulated. An example is the collector of antiques or goods with very limited production in this world, because when antiques or goods with a limited number of units are collected by one person, this can trigger the owner of the item to make the price more expensive, even though he can also make the price cheaper when he no longer likes the item. So not everything related to money can be easily manipulated by certain entities.

It's too generic a question really, market manipulation can happen at the level of central banks or it can happen at the level of somebody who creates themselves a pump'n'dump altcoin, plus a wide range beyond that. Market manipulation can happen in every industry and at all scales within that industry. It often happens when there is a monopoly or duopoly of some kind, which is why regulators often try to break them and avoid situations where they occur. Something at the level of a currency, at least of the most popular in the world - the US dollar, is way harder to manipulate than any of the other currencies out there and is unlikely to be targeted by individuals. However countries like China are in a constant tug of war trying to devalue their own currency to benefit.

market manipulation is very rampant so it does indeed a common occurrence that happened quite literally everywhere whether it's forex, stock market, cryptocurrencies, heck even gold also got some manipulation and all the precious metals.
you just expected such thing to occur since those whales with millions if not billions in their wallet will definitely try to take effort into growing their capital by simply taking advantage of their own capital and then start from there.
its even more rampant with newer emerging altcoins including shitcoin and meme coins where if you wonder about it, where did these shitcoin got their liquidity exactly, the answer is from these manipulators that infested the market.
this is the reason shitcoin market is highly speculative sometime rugpull isn't something that gonna shock anyone, everyone already expected that some of the coins will do rugpull since there's just simply so much manipulation happening behind

Authority holders can easily perform the manipulation. If there are not enough laws and there are people who are hungry for money, there will always be manipulation. With strict control, this can be prevented and the theft of innocent people's money can be prevented. However, greed for money takes precedence over everything else. I agree, there is always manipulation with anything that can be manipulated. In market manipulation, there are two techniques that people use to apply this. The first one is called Pump and Dump wherein the price of security artificially is infiltrated and then the manipulator sells out which causes followers to only be left with overvalued security, this technique is mostly used on stocks with micro-market capitalization. The other technique is called Poop and Scoop where the price of a stock is artificially deflated then the manipulator will buy the undervalued shares which causes them to have profit. As for currency, there is also what we call Currency Manipulation, which I'm sure some of us are already familiar with. It is manipulation that is not considered illegal but is heavily frowned upon. It is a manipulation controlled or executed by authorities like the Central Bank. Trading partners may also choose to apply sanctions on currency manipulation by deflating or inflating the value of their own currency under the floating exchange rate system.

If you are talking about altcoins, know that they are mostly centralized so any group or entity can easily manipulate its price or value. Unlike bitcoin, it's completely decentralized so even the government has nothing to do with its current value or price. Just like no one can access bitcoin except the owner itself. However, in a centralized system, market manipulation is always present. Whatever the government wants, the government gets. Even private businesses can still be manipulated through its governed laws wherein business owners are obliged to follow.

You're making sense and which is why the cryptocurency market has been getting attention recently because of the manipulation of the price is getting the attention of millionaires that would love to exercise their strength in the market and that's also why whenever they make a purchase, they keep announcing it so it'll make others to follow them to make purchase but they sell slightly without alerting the market just as Tesla did few weeks back without we knowing until the market dip.

What kind of people are capable of market manipulation?

First of all, price of true Cryptocurrency like Bitcoin can't be manipulated or dishonestly controlled by anyone. The power to do so was taken away from those who could in the past. The current price movements of the market are true reflection of natural market forces. Meaning, only things that naturally contribute to price movements will effect the price. Not some forces somewhere selling thousands of coins just to push the price downward whereas the economic/market force, sentiment or general feeling is bullish.
By the way, you don't need to have loads of money to contribute to price increase or decrease. Just one positive/truthful word or two, or some useful/good organic contributions are enough to move price up. An opposing force can't succeed in moving price downward if its words or contribution are just false, manipulative or inorganic.


Same applies to the fiat system, but unlike Bitcoin the market forces of fiats are based on the world's system or centralized fundamentals which could be considered manipulative. For example, dollars regulators printing more dollars to purposely weaken it abit. This is allowed by their laws...and we sometimes overlook it.

Do you remember 1 or 2 weeks ago bitcoin was suddenly dumped to $25,000 and then people spread rumors that it was Elon who sold his remaining bitcoins causing the market to drop? If a cryptocurrency has a small market capitalization, its price can absolutely be manipulated by a few wealthy and influential individuals. If it's a big decentralized cryptocurrency like Bitcoin and perhaps like Ethereum, I don't believe its price can be manipulated or controlled. But there's also a difference between manipulating a price and trying controlling the price. When people talk about the price manipulation, they usually mean that something can be done to cause a sudden growth or drop. When the price is controlled, it's usually about trying to keep it steady, to minimize volatility.
Fiat currencies are controlled, but I wouldn't call it a price manipulation. If a strong fiat currency can be kept fairly stable, for instance, that in no way means that it's possible to make its value suddenly increase by 20%, for example. And sometimes things can go out of control, with a currency's value becoming very different from the target value of the authorities. Stable coins are controlled, but again, I wouldn't call it price manipulation. And hypothetically, they can also crash, get out of control.

We can get a hint once manipulation happen if we can see a lot of negative news spreading especially on famous crypto pages and news. They do that in purpose since manipulators want to play peoples emotion so we need to be watchful with those indicators so that we will not get fooled by them and  can do some counteraction about possible things they do and possible to earn on situation that might occur.

USD and other fiat money is definitely manipulated since it's controlled by the government and they need their currency to be in good value. Cryptocurrency, most of altcoins can be easily manipulated since they are mostly centralized, the central hold most of the coins and they can do anything they want with that. I would say we shouldn't call that manipulation but more like that's the nature of it. I mean it's obvious that we are talking about the biggest currency in the world, you could go anywhere in the world and use USD aside from maybe China and Russia I would guess.
