I wrote a post yesterday about meme coins doing better than Alt. There was a pretty good argument that memes are also altcoins.

Then again, these comments made me start thinking. Are Altcoins really memecoins and why did you think so?

crypto = bitcoin + alts ( stablecoin, Layer 1, Layer 2, memecoin, dex coin, cex coin,....)

And to put it simply, memecoin is part altcoin, and perhaps the OP has misunderstood how these concepts work.

And usually we have more and more new concepts about altcoins, like later we will still hear about socialcoins Smiley

Every time a block is mined, a certain amount of BTC (called the subsidy) is created out of thin air and given to the miner. The subsidy halves every four years and will reach 0 in about 130 years.

I know by now you must have gotten enough answer to your question, and I believe this questions is as a result of you not having a good background know of cryptocurrency generally because you should know the difference between bitcoin and every other coin. Or perhaps you needore work to do than post maybe you should consider reading articles first and get yourself acquainted with the basic bitcoin and the cryptographic knowledge to be able to survive in the space.

You and also visit learnmeabitcoin[1] web page to learn more of bitcoin and how it works. That website has every beginner knowledge in it, hence after reading you will begin to follow up with the space of bitcointalk community.

Additionally I would also suggest you go to this thread or find any other thread that is rated to cryptocurrency word/ terminologies (vocabularies)[2] and there meanings it will help you to know the meaning of abbreviations that are used in the crypto space.

Anything in crypto currencies that isn't bitcoin is considered as altcoin. So memecoins/shitcoin are also altcoins. You can say that meme coins are another part/category of altcoins. Like a subgroup. Its the same way people mention Layer 1 coins, Layer 2 coins, privacy coins and so on. There are also exchange (CEX) coins and tokens which are all a part of altcoins. All these altcoins subgroup does have a cycling trend like when a meme coins starts to rally, the whole meme coin market follows the trend. Same goes with L2 coins. The post you read yesterday probably tried to say that memecoins are performing well in the market compared to the top altcoins.

They are the same, as far as I can see, because they can also provide profit to anyone who believes and sees potential in the market in the field of cryptocurrency.
It seems that fiat is like a different currency, but it is the same digital currency that can be exchanged for fiat.

But that is not the important thing because the bottom line is the only reason why many community investors enter the field of cryptocurrency, and that is to
grow the capital of each investor.

Other than Bitcoin everything else is called altcoins, which means alternate coins. meme coins use altcoins like Ethereum or Solana blockchain which is why they too fall under the category of altcoins. Another thing is that ordinals and brd20 token standards also are altcoins as they do not use Bitcoin's main network. So, you can say any cryptocurrency that is not using the Bitcoin network is an altcoin.

Yeah, meme coins are also altcoins that's correct because those coins are created following some big altcoins as like now Solana network based coins are going trendy,
but you will never consider altcoins are meme coins, because we will compare meme coins and altcoins between their real use cases or real value, meme coins have no real use cases and products that's why those are meme coins.

Technically, yes. Altcoins stand for alternative coins to Bitcoin which makes the statement valid. Memecoins just differ from many altcoins for having no utility or specific burning mechanism or usage. But things are the same, meme tokens are still cryptocurrencies running on different chains. What covers Bitcoin and altcoins are simply ceyptocurrency and it is subdivided by categories of decentralized and centralized cryptos. Centralized are those which are mosty having stable market prices but not totally. Decentralized are the opposite but what makes it different is the word 'decentralization'.
It may be really luck that you can get rich from memecoin because almost memecoin can't move in value for long time. Lots of scam memecoins are entering the market so fill your bag of experience to pick the best one. Almost everyone has memecoin holdings and I already have two memecoins secured that I picked for long time. However, pick the best memecoins from cmc who have managed to enter the major exchange markets and whose development activities are truly commendable.
Well, most of the memecoins are just having low market volume but that does't validate scam accusation unless rugpull is evident with those projects. As we all know, their market prices are only dependent with hype alone and nothing contributes to demand unlike with other altcoins having utilities and burning mechanisms which supports demand, ofcourse.

The performance of meme coin was quite good for a few days. But we can't compare meme coin with alt coin. Because alt coin is an alternative coin. Means alternative coin of BTC. Meme coin may do well in the market for a while. But the season of alt coin will also start and its price will increase. Which has already started. The price of Ethereum is sky high now.And every meme coin is an alt coin so there is nothing to compare here.

BIG WINNER!

~
Are Altcoins really memecoins and why did you think so?
I will quote the definition of meme coins base on Investopedia:
Quote
"Meme coin" is a term used to refer to cryptocurrencies named after characters, individuals, animals, artwork, or anything else that can be mimicked.
~
Most meme coins are purely trading instruments, unlike Ethereum and other utility currencies tied to specific blockchain features. Major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, USD Coin, XRP, Cardano, Solana, Polygon, and Polkadot are generally not considered meme coins.
I guess that definition that I quoted answers your question. Ethereum isn't named after animals, artwork or whatever, and so does the other altcoins. Now to answer your question, yes meme coins are considered as altcoins, but altcoins can't be considered as meme coins because at first place, meme coins are just created for fun.

Then again, these comments made me start thinking. Are Altcoins really memecoins and why did you think so?

As far as I know Altcoin was created after Bitcoin and works using their own unique blockchain technology. Some well known examples of Altcoins are Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, Solana. Meanwhile, examples of meme coins include Dogecoin, ShibaInu. All coins except Bitcoin are called altcoins. In short, altcoins act as an alternative to Bitcoin, while meme coins are more lightweight, speculative and made for entertainment. I don't want to confuse alt coins and meme coins by making the difference I can only say that meme coins are cheaper than alt coins.

Technically speaking "alt" coin is derived from alternative coin, what is it alternative to? To bitcoin. Which means that any coin that is not bitcoin is an altcoin. So yeah, in general they are all altcoins. However, there is logic to remember that not all of them are coins, most of them are tokens, what are tokens? When a project has its own blockchain, its a coin, when it doesn't have a blockchain but based on another coins blockchain, then it is a token. So you could say that they are altcoins in the dictionary meaning of the world, but they are not coins at all, they are tokens. These differences are very important when you are investing into something, could be very important.

Simply put, Bitcoin is the original, any other coin is an alternative to Bitcoin including meme coins. The main first digital cryptographically built coin is Bitcoin. Interestingly, Bitcoin has maintained outstanding qualities since its design. It has remained unbeatable as depicted on the Coinmarketcap. In this forum, any other coin is simply alternative coins including Ethereum, BNB, USDT, etc. So, meme coins, just like any coin that is not Bitcoin are referred to as alternative coins (Altcoins).

Op, with the amount of posts you have made here in this forum should be enough reason to prove that you have read, learnt and share the knowledge you got from reading. But the question you asked is just showing to me that you have been in this forum for just making shitpost and not acquiring the knowledge that the forum serves.

Bitcoin is the first coin that was created and every other coin that was created thereafter are just bunch of altcoins which stands for alternative coins. So every other category of coin are altcoins even those created by exchanges.

Luck is the most important part. You do not need luck to profit from bitcoin, you also do not need luck to profit from ethereum, or a dozen other coins. However, if you want to make a profit from meme projects which almost all of them are a tokens, then you will need luck.

I am sorry, but ı rather not require luck to make a profit and I would rather invest into something that would make sense. I get that it is going to be a bit tough, and I get that it is going to be a little difficult to handle, but at the end of the day we should be looking for something that will take it to a place that's fine. I know that it is going to be a bit crazy, and it is not that easy to make that profit, but be cool about it and you will be fine.

You are too green OP, any coin that is not bitcoin is considered to be an altcoin, however there are some altcoins that are worth of your investment and others that are not, and often we distinguished them by calling those that are not worth your investment as shitcoins, and all meme coins fall into that definition, even the ones that have obtained success over the years like dogecoin are still considered to be a shitcoin, because there is no innovation behind the coin and it is a low effort attempt by the devs behind it to make money with it.

Memecoin are classified to be altcoins, every other coins apart from bitcoin are claimed under altcoins. All this coins classified under altcoins they have things in common. Memecoins are not under own, they still belong to altcoins.  All the coins are not reliable and they are also known as copy cat coin because they are just trying to be like Bitcoin but some of them don't have good value in the market.

Well yes because there is only 1 other coin that is not a alt coin. And that is Bitcoin.

For me there is 3 different types of coins, that is Bitcoin, Alt coins, and Stable coins. But I do think it is wise idea to keep some meme coins in your crypto portfolio too.

I wrote a post yesterday about meme coins doing better than Alt. There was a pretty good argument that memes are also altcoins.

Then again, these comments made me start thinking. Are Altcoins really memecoins and why did you think so?

I believe it highly depends whom you ask, in my opinion. During much time I had been the kind of person who would have classified memecoins as also being alternative coins or alternative currencies within this community and ecosystem. Though, after thinking over it for some time, I have come to the conclusion that memecoins could also be classified in their exclusive category from alternative currencies, here is why:
Alternative currencies are called that way, because they since their conceptions were supposed to be an ALTERNATIVE to Bitcoin and the disadvantages many people viewed on it, like the time of blocks, the mining consumption and the high fees. Hence, Currencies like Litecoin, Ethereum, and Monero were created.
The main difference with memecoins is that these do not seek to be an alternative to Bitcoin, they are just there for the sake of speculation and memes/fun. They do not actually seek to replace or enhance the features Bitcoin has and could not care less on the competition Bitcoin represents.

So keeping that in mind, we could say we would be talking about a different category.

'Alt' was a way to capture everything that's not Bitcoin into 1 cesspool.  Not much discussion needed:

Not your keys = not your Bitcoin
Not Bitcoin = alt

Easy.
perhaps you're very correct, just the way every industry has there own terminologies for communication so we have here in the bitcoin community hence altcoin is a word coined to describe coins that exist in the space that are not bitcoin. Altcoin is absolutely any coin/ token that is not believing but has same type of attribute that bitcoin possesses, which is equally being a digital money.

Memecoins too are altcoins because they aren't bitcoin.
