This is a reminder to all, both newbies and OGs in the forum on account security. It is good that when we are creating an account in this forum or any other important platform, we should always use an email that we have access to all the time. Some people use random emails that they can lay their hands on to register their account forgetting that, if you don't have access to your account, maybe you forget your password or where you wrote it down, you don't have access to the book. It is only from your email that you can use to have access to your account.

What I am saying is that, those of us that are using an email address that we have forgotten the password or don't have access to the password, should go and create a new emails address and change it with the old one, so that incase you forget your password or don't have access to your bitcointalk account, you will not be worried, as you can just use your email to login to your Bitcointalk account with ease, because a link will be sent to that email from the admin here, which gives you access to change your password and login. Try not to save any password in your head, because it is a big risk but write it down in a notebook, and back it up so that when you misplace wherever you wrote your password down, you can reach out for the back ups. Don't save your password on cloud flare or on your computer, because it is dangerous and can easily be accessed.

You should also make sure that the email you use on Bitcointalk account registration is very active on your device or computer for notifications, and don't ignore any notification from that email address so that if your account is hacked, immediately you will know, and if you are smart enough, you can use your email to reset your account password, before the hacker changes the email address to your account. I am saying this from the experience of what happened to me last week Saturday, I don't know how I forget my password, and when I reached out for the book where I wrote it on, I couldn't lay my hands on it.

I got worried, and didn't enjoy my Easter day, because of not having access to the email which I used to register my account, as it has been 2yrs since I created that email before I used it to register my bitcointalk account here. I neglected checking if I still have access to the email address, because I believe that the password is safe and anytime I want it, I can get it. To cut the story short, it was on Tuesday this week that I was able to have access to the email for a change of password on my Bitcointalk account, which got be relieved.

So tell me if you have had such experience of not being able to login to your Bitcointalk forum account due to password issues, and how did you feel about it. Let's discuss.

R

Let's discuss about warning and guides from theymos.

This is something we recently started doing. If email sent to your email address bounces with an error message like, "This email address doesn't exist", then your email may eventually be changed to u...@bounces.invalid. (It's not possible for users to change their email address to something ending in .invalid, so this can only be an administrative change.) Because your old email didn't exist, somebody could've registered your non-existent email address and used that to steal your account.

I didn't particularly intend for the trust warning to appear for these automatic changes, but it's a niche situation and a bit difficult to fix, so I probably won't fix this unless several other people complain. It only lasts 30 days, after all.

Longer-term, I would also like to do something about emails where the domain times-out or returns a "temporary" error in like 3 of the last 12 months or something like that. If you register with an email like asdfwerwe@werwetwerwer.com, then somebody could register werwetwerwer.com and steal the account that way. But this issue isn't on my short-term to-do list at all.

So tell me if you have had such experience of not being able to login to your Bitcointalk forum account due to password issues, and how did you feel about it. Let's discuss.
I will go for password reset which will be through a link sent me through email. I have written my password several times to the extent that I may not forget it. Although, I should not rely on memory and that makes me have the password backup somewhere. The password is strong enough against hacking and I use only the official forum link to login and not a hacker's link.

I try to prevent against this by -
  • Having several password backups
  • Having backups for my email and recovery emails
  • Having means of recovering my account if it is lost (a staked address)
  • I do not use it, but you can use the 2FA option.

This method is good, I prefer it but one way if mastering password is regular logout and login as inputting the password during login can help master one password, if the password is full of characters that it's complications is a difficult one after writing it down one should keep login and logout , that give room for off hand mastering that one will not required any other medium of savings except one have issue in mental health.

This is a reminder to all,

don't have access to the password, should go and create a new emails address and change it with the old one,

First of all, thanks for the remainder, I checked whether I have access to the email that I used to register then I realized I flashed my device where that email logged in and I remember the password still can't able to log in for some reason so now I registered a fresh email that will serve that purpose you mentioned.

Still, there are other ways to recover in case if we lose access but it's time consuming procedure so I urge everyone to check whether you have access to the email that you have under your profile.

Try not to save any password in your head, because it is a big risk but write it down in a notebook, and back it up so that when you misplace wherever you wrote your password down, you can reach out for the back ups. Don't save your password on cloud flare or on your computer, because it is dangerous and can easily be accessed.
I still prefer using a password I can remember instead of writing it down. Any person who makes a mistake of using Gmail's that don't exist or they barley have access to is only putting his account to risk of being lost and not accessible. On joing the forum, I still remember that I had created a new email account since upon creating with my real email account, I got the proxy ban and hence could no longer use same email address. I simply created a new email and then saved the password though I already knew it as it's a password I use for only my confidential details.

Another reason why some user will forget their account password is because they are always logged in and don't bother logging out sometimes. This way, when they are logged out from the forum, it becomes hard for them to remember which password they had used in creating their accounts. Once in a while, it would be better to log out and log in to you btt account so as to always remember what password you had used.

You should also make sure that the email you use on Bitcointalk account registration is very active on your device or computer for notifications, and don't ignore any notification from that email address so that if your account is hacked
This will harm your privacy because if there's a pop up notification about this forum when someone see your phone, they will know if you have account in this forum and know you're have interest to Bitcoin.

Learn to memorize your password by login manually every time you want to access this forum, don't just login for one time.

Another thing you need to use 2FA, even the hacker can change your email and password, but if they didn't know the 2FA code, you will be safe.

But do we really need to get afraid with that? I think there's no risk for us if people would randomly see that we have account of this forum since that doesn't mean that we flex our asset to them. If they know then maybe they will just say that o the guy is crypto user but for sure they would never think about doing bad things unless the one you suddenly show is your wallet with 1 BTC or above inside of it since for sure you will be in trouble if the criminals would see it.

But in this case we should never forget our password and make sure that we write it up on safe offline materials which we are the one who can access it and have working email attach with our accounts so that we can make sure that we are totally safe from any dangers that we don't want to happen.

Have you posted anything about cryptocurrency in your social medias? not about the amount you have.

When someone know you're have interest or own Bitcoin, it means people will see you're rich and definitely think your phone is the place where you hold your coins. If you get $5 wrench attack and they force you to give your phone, what will you do in such situation?

Of course, your advice on account security is very important and serves as an important reminder for all of us. The importance of using accessible and regularly checked email cannot be overemphasized. This is a simple step to ensure that we do not lose access to our accounts. In addition to your advice, I would like to add that it is important to use two-factor authentication whenever possible.

I had similar issues but though it was not Bitcointalk account but my G-mail account. after I had that encounter I changed the password and kept it in a safe place. My own story was that I forgot the password of the Gmail I attached to my Bitcointalk account. So I was doing something and I loved out of thatbgamil on my phone I tried severally but yet it didn't work out, I tried and tried but all to no avail I have to use my second Gmail account which was a backup Gmail to retrieve the information of the other one. After which I changed the password and didn't update a new Gmail to my BTT account. So we really need to be careful when handling issues of password and security.

Just in case, everyone should at least read once the post pinned in Other > Meta: Recovering hacked/lost accounts, which has also been translated into a dozen languages so far, and posted in the respective local boards. So you have no excuses Wink

One way to recover your lost account is via PGP (you can find a tutorial by our friend Learn Bitcoin about how to use PGP encryption here, which is also being translated into different languages at this moment).

The other way is by signing a message with a Bitcoin address associated to your forum account.

Except someone that doesn't come to the forum frequently that can forget their password, because every time I try to log in my account a captcha and password is required some times I even get logged out while still online then I will need to insert my details again but there are some persons that sets there account to stay logged in, this act is not advisable as someone can easily get access to your account without having to enter your login details which pose a security threat to your account. No matter how tiring it is logging in your passwords and other details all the time, it is preferable. Some people still used correct email address here so in a case of forgotten passwords, it can easily be reset and the link sent to your validated email for confirmation.

It happened to me before when I become inactive after the bounty campaign is not paying anymore. I totally forgot my password because I use unique password which I usually paste on my notes. My notes is gone due to my computer problem that needs to be reformat while I can’t see my email address that I use on my account because it was hidden.

On the good side, I have a phone that login all my gmail account and I use the search button to see emails that contain my username. It’s really frustrating but I’m not thinking of losing my account because account recovery is available on Meta board using sign message of my previous address.

Thank you for sharing this, OP!

This is one of those things that most people often neglect when they create their account. Some of the people provide misleading/inaccurate information that can be troublesome in the future if they lose access to their accounts.

I am somehow worried about the security of my account that I really had to check my registered email if all my information are there. Good thing is, this account is linked to that email; in case of recovery, I have a backup secured.

Just a question, assuming that our registered email in your account does not work, are there any ways in order to recover your said account?

For example, can you present proof to admins that you own a certain account by showing proof of signed messages, etc. as a way to recover your account?

So tell me if you have had such experience of not being able to login to your Bitcointalk forum account due to password issues, and how did you feel about it. Let's discuss.

This is an important topic because most people joined the forum without this basic information so they just registered with a spare email they don't even have access to. Some members never believed they would be active in the forum so they just registered with any careless email. The email used in registering in Bitcointalk should be active and the email password shouldn't be forgotten. There is a current topic Please Recover My account which should remind us of the importance of keeping our email safe to avoid much drama. Although changing an inactive or an inaccessible email is the best option it could also raise suspicion of account change of hands. But it is still the best option.

We should not play with our login details as well as anything that is of importance to us, these sensitive information's should be what we could easily remember and have a secured means of storing their backup, in case of those whose bitcointalk account have been compromised, then it is possible for them to be able to recover it when they are able to sign a message and have the recovery mail to their account with full access, it may only take some time in making the findings and verifying ownership, but it's very possible, in other for us to safe ourselves from any further challenges, regard this, we should be the only one having access to our account use and its login credentials including the device used for login.

The challenge is that for some users, the email address used in opening the forum is invalid, so whenever they lose or forget their login details (password), their account goes dormant because they are unable to log back in. Tell newbies who are interested in opening forum accounts to always use a valid email address that is active to avoid future problems.

Try not to save any password in your head, because it is a big risk but write it down in a notebook, and back it up so that when you misplace wherever you wrote your password down, you can reach out for the back ups.
An easy password can easily be kept in memory. You do not have to use complicated passwords that you think will make your account more secure.
