Hmm the case is a bit confusing, or he meant he gambled in his spare time and it did not interfere with the quality of his work, I think it should not have been a problem for the Bank, but the law says otherwise which ultimately decided to fire him, and also I think the dismissal had nothing to do with the crypto that was his gambling currency, but I will say a fairly reasonable reason why the bank ultimately fired him, here what we have to think about is that the bank is a company that manages finances, a lot of customer money is deposited and if it turns out that one of their employees likes to gamble then of course isn't there a possibility for him to one day try to embezzle his company's money with any scenario in order to continue to realize his desire to gamble? yes I think that is very possible to happen, and cases like that have also been discussed in this forum before about employees who use customer money to gamble and that's the reason.

It is against office ethics to be playing game on duty whether it is crypto related or not. The employee act would bring a dent on the institution if he was caught by a customer and it will show that he is not serious with work.
I believe the investigation should still be carried out to be sure since the guy gave reasons why he shouldn't be fired.

I don't know for sure what is the current situation in south Korea as regards to cryppt adoption in the country, if likely that crypto transactions is banned in that country same way it is banned here in Nigeria, then that must be the real reason why he was sacked or dismissed from working in the bank.

But then, I am still a bit confused, how was the bank able to catch him playing the game if he wasn't actually doing it during his work hours? Gambling during work hours is very unethical and shows great irresponsibility, doing this alone is enough to get one sacked from his place of work.
But assuming he wasnt really playing the game during his work hours, then it's highly possible that the government of South Korea have some restrictions on crypto transactions in the country, and for them to find a bank worker playing games using crypto, it simply means that the worker have violated the rule and law of his country, and that as well is enough to get him sacked from his job.

Crypto or fiat, as long as the concern is habitual gambling, then it will never be trusted by any bank or financial institution since his addiction will eventually lead him to make things that are definitely against the bank rules and policies. I just made a glance through the website and I noticed crypto wasn't the only reason why this individual was charged for, because according to the article link which you provided above, it's said that he was noticed to have been  “engaged in inappropriate private money lending” with the bank’s loan clients" and likewise claimed to have been a “habitual gambler who played online gambling games that use crypto as an in-game currency, of which Crypto gambling games were said to be illegal in South Korea. So it's likely to have been fired too if crypto wasn't involved base on the first charged of "Private Money leading". Because at some point, I will tend to blame the individual to have let his fellow colleagues know he was gambling via using a crypto casino, while knowing fully well it was illegal in his country.

Even if it is crypto that is the issue here. This person has become addicted to this habit and then he would always be caught playing the game during working duties. To be honest, most people don't know the reasons for online casinos. Privacy is one reason, and such gamblers can be doing those things in private instead of doing them publicly in working place. It's impossible to carry a physical casino into a private room or restroom to gamble but with an online casino I can do that. Sometimes, I book my games in the restroom. I understand that everyone has freedom of free will but not why you are working in a company. There are some rules that we ought to abide if not we can get sacked.

Not sure if he will be fired or not because it all depends on the company's rules. If the company or company owner has set certain rules, he will still be fired even though he is not involved in crypto.

Crypto has nothing to dso with the bank and the court's decision, the guy is working in a bank and some banks implement a work ethics that an employee must adhere as long as he is working in a bank.

One can do anything in his personal life but if he does not use it in his professional life then it is not a crime for him. If he does not gamble while on duty at his workplace, i.e. the bank. In that case he should not have been fired. The bank officer thinks that since he is addicted to gambling, he can secretly interfere with the bank's money after he loses his personal money gambling. So he may be dismissed from the job due to such suspicion. And this is why one should not disclose one's gambling as it can cause us many problems

Incidents and cases like the OP described, according to my understanding it depends on the Bank's own policy, where if the Bank applies rules for employees not to gamble with crypto or not to gamble using fiat money of course the employee will also be fired.

Bank regulations in my country gamble is strictly prohibited by the bank, whatever type of gambling is online or offline, even if they play outside working hours or in the office, If it is discovered that dismissal is before the employee's eyes, then the Bank employees are truly free from gambling, such as alcohol and actions that are detrimental to themselves or the bank.

Pretty sure ANY job would punish you (firing you immediately is another thing) if you were caught to be gaming (or any non-work activity) during work hours. It's called "work hours" for a reason. Granted yes you can argue as long as they get the job done then all is good, then if so put it in the contract if you want that to be a guarantee? That they pay you for the work done, not for the hours spent. Dumb, yes, but hey, it's how Corpo works.

It is foolish of him to have even thought of opening a casino account on the banking premises at all, if he wanted to gamble, he would have patiently waited until he got home, but unfortunately for him, the deed is done, he should go hurting for another job again.

The dude is not sensible enough to know that gambling is not permitted in the banking system especially during work hours and another thing you must know is that in bank there are cameras stored to monitor people, more especially to track any illegal or a suspicious movement within and around the banking environments, this is to help alerts everyone and staff working under the bank about danger that is about to happened.

It’s actually better he got caught so he couldn’t cause more damage to the company or to himself financially. When someone can’t control themselves with gambling, that’s already gambling addiction, and there’s no room for addicts in a company that wants to keep a positive atmosphere. The bank employee most likely signs a contract with the employer and there everything is described in detail regarding all the points that concern even his extra-work hobbies, which can even indirectly affect his work, and passion for games can be such. If it was so important to him, it was worth taking care that it remained a secret, although I think that the contract should also have mentioned that he must report it. His decision to take the case to court looks strange, even in case of victory it would have greatly spoiled his relationships at work.

Depends actually. If you are gambling within the premises of your company then they have the rights to fire you although it is not stated. It might as well be a preference of your company and that's out of our hands. Hard to determine whether it is just because of the involvement of cryptocurrency which lead to this unfortunate outcome. It may also be due to restrictions on gambling activities in South Korea. Not quite sure but as far as I know it is prohibited to gamble in public, in this country, and there's a specific district wherein casinos are allowed to operate. With this, if you cannot limit yourself gambling outside the area where such activity is allowed, then you are basically committing a crime by letting them know. As others have mentioned, it could also be stated in his contract with the employer.

But at the end of the day, he's already fired. What's best is to learn from this instance and to just avoid doing it in front of other people to lessen the potential problem such as what he experienced. We all know gambling has a negative image to many countries and to be a responsible civilian, make sure you know the rules and to follow it.

He should've been sent to the jail instead of got fired because he broke the country laws. There's no correlation between broke country laws and banks, the banks only don't want to accept employees who're gambler. Someone should check all the device that used by the banks CEO, he might also a gambler.

I think the bank's main fear was that its employees would gamble with the users'/customers' money. And to fire him was just a preventive move from the bank, i don't think it was a justified move, but for sure it was part of his contract.

And the fault was from the employee, he must be more careful with his gambling sessions. People didn't have to know about it.

I have seen in South Korea a lot of taxi drivers... driving and playing online games during their work like the most common thing to do... so I am not really surprised there is some one that is playing even during office time.
But I will not blame anyone. I don't here the big problem is "crypto", There are many rules in a company and laws for a nation so in this specific case we cannot know exactly what happens.

As a taxi passenger, I felt uncomfortable riding in a car where the taxi driver was distracted by the game, what if he bet his entire salary and lost it while driving me. After that, he could become aggressive on the road, which would cause an accident. However, I don’t understand why there are so many gamblers in South Korea, can’t they understand how this business works and what they earn from them? Most likely, they want their lives to change quickly and become rich in an instant, so that they no longer have to work hard as a taxi driver. I would advise them to sometimes go in and see how much they have lost in total, to come down to earth and understand a lot.
