If the employee really did play during non-working hours, then the employer's decision, as well as the court's, is most likely not entirely fair. Also, in my opinion, this is too strict a policy of the bank towards its employees. After all, the main thing is whether it somehow affects the employee's work or not. If the employee performs his duties well or even has some merits, then in general I do not see the need to fire for games. In addition, if he played from a work computer, then Internet access can be configured in such a way as to filter out unwanted sites. Why the bank took such extreme measures is not entirely clear.

In this case, I think it's fair for the bank to fire its employee because he committed an illegal act and it's necessary to protect the institution's honor. However, if this isn't illegal, then in my opinion the bank should never have fired this employee, much less for just cause. This considering that he never really played during working hours. We currently live in a world where online games are increasingly "infiltrated" into our lives. At the same time that they become increasingly popular, other people who are against this habit are unable to adapt and live with people who gamble, this has created more and more friction in our communities. I believe that in this case, there could have been an agreement between the bank and its employee, without resorting to such drastic measures.

DIdnt have been able to clarify on online gambling but speaking about physical then it turned out to be of their main tourist attraction. Gambling sector is closely monitored and regulated by the National Gaming control commission under#nbsp; and the government specially legislated certain types of gambling activities and supervised by relevant governmental institutes under National Gambling Control Act, such as:
the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism regulates the South Korean casino industry, motorboat racing, cycle racing and sports promotion betting tickets (e.g., Sports Toto), the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs regulates horse racing and traditional bullfighting, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance regulates lottery businesses.Source: https://manimama.eu/online-gambling-regulation-in-south-korea/I do highly doubt that they are against on crypto gambling on which this is something that they cant be able to regulate.

Regardless of whether he gambled with crypto or not, but the company action to fire him was certainly right in my opinion, we all know that gambling habits can indeed bring great risks to an employee, both in terms of financial and professional, so many companies actually implement strict policies regarding the behaviour of employees involved in gambling, Because there are many cases where employees who gamble will trigger a bad reputation for the company, including the possibility that he will use company money for gambling can happen, In addition, gambling can cause serious financial problems for everyone especially if he is just an employee who has a low salary, so will eventually disrupt his economy which can directly affect their emotional and professional stability at work.
The company will not risk their employees to gets addicted to gambling. Even if their employee can take care of themselves while playing gambling, that doesn't means their employee can still take care of themselves in the other days. An employee needs to understand what the company will do to those who still playing gambling so they will not complaint because that is on the rules in the company. The employee must realizes that they are work with the company and should obey the rules. Besides that, the employee needs to understand what will happen to them if they lose their money or becomes addicted to gambling.

Yes, you are right. This needs to be clarified. You can't fire a person for spending his free time gambling. If so, the bank is wrong and will be obliged to apologize to the employee and reinstate him to the vacancy. As I understand it, the bet was made on the fact that the game was played with crypto, which is unworthy in the bank's opinion. Seriously? Is this the very proof that the court took it into account? This is complete absurdity and nothing more. I just laugh at reading about this. What is happening to this world?

If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired?
I think it's not the involvement of crypto that led to his dismissal of duties but rather the fact that it's an habitual gambler as stated it's more reasons to level any charges against him, basically because as a banker the finances ain't safe any longer cause he might one day loan from the bank to keep up his gambling habits and you know what that means, then using crypto as the in game currency is another charge cause we all know the challenges between the government and crypto community so they can go miles in bringing you down.

One of the most common action that they will really be doing is to remove someone who do have show signs of possible addiction and they do really just that making up some excuse or alibi that the thing he had been doing is really that against certain laws and regulations but actually it is really that pertaining into something that do talks about possible addiction and could potentially ending up on using banks funds to feed up their addiction and this could really that likely to happen.

This can certainly happen, but we should not forget that many people and even quite gamblers still have some brakes in their heads and will not become criminals by actually stealing other people's money. But from the side of the HR department of any business and banks in general, first of all, very often certain psychological portraits of employees are created and they, among other things, seriously influence the decisions of employers to dismiss this or that employee simply on the basis of suspicions of the possibility that he will cross the line of what is permitted or, even more so, commit a crime.

So what the corporate rules should be then? Dont gamble with crypto at work? First of all, if employee managed to access gambling site by using company device (pc, laptop, tablet), then its admins fault that he does not restrict them or even made it free internet access for a device that is used to operate with banking software. If that employee has used his own device to gamble at work, that is not really a crime. Bank can not interfere in employee life. As well as bank should not give a damn about employees hobby, passion, maybe even addiction, as long as employee does his job perfectly.

I think with the strict rules made by the company, actualy company is trying to protect employees from gambling risk and create a safer and health work environment, I think as An employee we also need to understand that these rules are made for maintain the integrity and reputation of the company.

If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired? It is not surprising that the bank will win the lawsuit because the legal system always does not work well anywhere. Regarding the employee who was now fired, it is very sad even though he said he did not do it during working hours, he still lost in court. I mean as long as he works well fulfilling the criteria of his duties then activities outside of work cannot be linked. Gambling it is his right based on his own will, but when the bank interferes it feels like there is something wrong with their law system.

Firstly there are no names in the article, so the news is difficult to digest at the moment for me.
Secondly, the story if true, the employee was giving out loans in private. If they were using the bank's money to do this, then it is a serious offence and the judgement would be justified.
So just the fact that someone is a gambler, does not dismiss them from their job, they were misusing funds from the institution.
All that assuming the story is true.

In South Korea, A bank employee was found to be playing online games that use crypto as its in game currency. The bank claimed that the employee is a habitual gambler and fired him from his job. The ex-employee naturally raised his concern to HR as he thinks it is unfair dismissal but the HR rejected his appeal which led him to file a lawsuit. In the end, even the court sided with the bank. Even though the ex-employee claims that he never played during work hours and that his habits did not interfere with his work quality, the court rules it to be undignified to be gambling with crypto. If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired? FIrst of all is the staff playing the slot while he's work or just play outside the work. Because the company might fired you if you played game when the time is a "work time". If I the company Im not gonna fired anyone if they do thing outside the working hour even tho he still at the office. There is already complications right? the gambler is working on banks and could be holding money that is obviously not his. And so he can still performs his job but we don't know behind what he is doing with those money as they are temptations right? And probably the employer doesn't want to take that risk that he has a employee that is a known gambler and he could be attracted to the money, simply as that. And we all know that employers have every right to terminated a employee because of the risk that it involved, so it jeopardizes his work specially if his position in handling money. So there is conflict of interest and it could result later in a fraud. Banks as well as one of the pillars of the government, and so they held high standards and they don't want employees that are involved in gambling.

If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired? Since the employee claimed that his gambling habits did not affect his work hours, or he never gambled while on duty time, so I do not think that the employee should be fired just for gambling using crypto in his free time. However, in a country like South Korea where social and economic norms are quite strict, such things may not be acceptable to many institutions, And those institutions take this issue even more seriously. And that's why the negative perception about crypto and online gaming went against that employee, and the court ruled against him.

The title feels misleading, in my opinion. The news says the employee was fired for gambling - not just for playing crypto games. Playing games might be against company rules, but it’s not usually grounds for termination. This employee got caught, was terminated, and now he’s fighting for his “rights”? What a moron… it’s like he doesn’t realize that gambling on the job isn’t just unethical, it’s a serious offense. The company had to handle it accordingly.

Yes, the title should be slightly revised, such as changing it to "a bank employee was fired for being involved in gambling" and not for playing crypto games, the only thing that makes me agree with the company's decision is because there is a possibility for the employee to eventually gamble using company money secretly which of course will definitely harm the bank. On the other hand, I don't think there will be a reasonable reason for the employee to be used as a defense in order to defend his rights, OP said that the person gambled outside of work hours and maybe that's what made him try to make a defense, but I think as I said above that one of the reasons why I agree with the bank's decision is that there is a possibility for the employee to eventually embezzle company money to gamble.

In this case. We can't do conclude that crypto was the full cause of him being fired... Though we know how banks are not buying the idea of cryptocurrency as it's more like a rival to them.. but then the employee was already becoming an addict.. he claims that he didn't gamble or let his gambling interfere with his work, how then were they able to find out that he plays on a casino? These things most times can be personal if we do keep them hidden.. he could have dropped his gambling habits at home and after work he can continue instead of creating more problems for himself...
You're absolutely right! because as a bank employee he should have left his gambling attitude at home and focus on his job, then after closing from work he continues with his gambling attitude than for him to Lost his job just in the name of gambling addicted. Which is a very shameful thing to him, that's why is always necessary for us to control our gambling addiction whenever we're in our work place to avoid any embarrassment or sack. Because though as an employee in a company or banks whenever they noticed that you are a gambler they would be seeing you as someone that is not responsible and just that moment they wouldn't have any trust on you again.
