In South Korea, A bank employee was found to be playing online games that use crypto as its in game currency. The bank claimed that the employee is a habitual gambler and fired him from his job. The ex-employee naturally raised his concern to HR as he thinks it is unfair dismissal but the HR rejected his appeal which led him to file a lawsuit. In the end, even the court sided with the bank. Even though the ex-employee claims that he never played during work hours and that his habits did not interfere with his work quality, the court rules it to be undignified to be gambling with crypto.

If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired?

He would have still been fired if crypto wasn't involved I think the reason why he was sacked is that as a banker you are dealing with public fund been addicted in gambling is like puting the reputation of the bank at risk because he has made gambling a habit, they the court should have still pardon him since he wasn't gambling during work hours which would have distracted him not to focus on the work he is doing rather than gambling but as a habitual gambler the chance of using people funds to gamble is could come through if proper care was not taken.
So that morel lesson here is that we shouldn't get addicted into gambling at the level of making it too known to people that you can't do without gambling and as banker it is very risky because you might be tempted to gamble with other people fund.

I think that it is equally important that the employer does not know that his employee has cryptocurrency and plays in a casino using cryptocurrency. This at least reduces the grounds for dismissal in the event that there is competition for a job with other applicants. And for this, of course, information about cryptocurrency and casino games should also be hidden from all employees at work simply because even if one of them finds out about it, the employer will still find out. Someone will definitely blab or deliberately tell the employer about such a passion of the employee.

Yes you are right, it is better to hide our activities related to cryptocurrencies with our daily activities at work or other public places. because not everyone understands properly about cryptocurrencies themselves, especially if in our workplace with many people who have different thoughts and views, it is easy for them to assume that the cryptocurrencies we run will interfere with our performance and they are very enthusiastic in reporting to their superiors with unreasonable reasons.

Take an average employee, when being at work, he thinks and wishes work to end as quick as possible, and thinks what he will be doing after work. And that employee also dreams about vacation. Think employer should fire him, because he is not thinking only about work?

Yes, to conclude your opinion above, I think it is unfair for an employee if the only reason he plays crypto games at work even though it is during break time because this also violates the rights of the provisions in the company's regulations.
Because logically when it's break time, employees can do all the activities they like, right?
Of course not, it is common for employees to have thoughts of wanting to go home and rest because maybe they are tired from working all day and dreaming of a vacation, just think of it as their enthusiasm for working to be more active and disciplined.

Anything you use to gamble will be a criminal activity. Moreover, if you just gamble without a job or work then that is the bad side of your spirit. But if you gamble while working for a company your boss will know. Because a company is usually controlled by cctv. So an addicted gambler is a harmful employee for a company because it can cause a lot of damage to the company. Whenever he gambles and loses again and again, his mentality may change and he may steal the company assets due to financial crisis.

Yes it is true if an employee of a company is addicted to gambling and if he gambles during his office hours and if his boss comes to know about it then it is normal that there may be a pressure on him. Because the owner of the company will have many things to think about including stealing money from the company by gambling and since the op's story mentions the guy who used to work at the bank this could be the case.  on the other hand, if he gambles with his own money and loses his money, he will become very depressed and misbehave with customers, which will ruin a company's reputation. For these reasons, an employee with a gambling addiction may be fired by his boss

Most likely the boss cannot find out if you are smart enough. I have worked in a bank as IT and I have kept gambling during work hours through my mobile phone in the wireless of the bank, segmented of course from the main network and no logging systems were in place there, it was free access to anyone, I had a privacy filter to the screen of my phone and I have gambled sitting near my colleagues of the department, they never know that I did this as I don't anymore, not because I am afraid or something though because brutally terrible luck happened at the office, my point is that only dumb employees can be caught, those who know their thing are extra hard to catch, not wanting to suggest anyone to gamble in the office, just want to show that is very much possible without consequences if you are smart enough.

As an IT then this wont really be that something a problem since you could really be able to make yourself that hide on specially on trying out to get away in someones eyes then you will really be that definitely be doing this but for those who dont have much idea or knowledge about computer network and potential being monitored then you will really be having this kind of possibility that you do get caught earlier,
for those someone whose really that having the speciality when it comes to connections and other computer stuffs then you will really be that not caught so easily. So this wont really be that much of an issue.
As for firing an employee because of that having some involvement with gambling then its not really that a surprising thing on which they will really be that focusing on trying out to avoid those potential risks
that there might be some misuse of banks funds to cater out someones greed or addiction.

By law in any country except most third world countries and even there maybe you get caught immediately as it goes against the bank policy to use the bank assets in your favor and to gamble there, that is huge stupidity being done by the guy who was caught gambling in the bank. You need to be desperate or have a huge level of addiction to be playing in such an institution and knowing your penalties if get caught, I don't see any other explanation to this. That is why it is preferable to only play on your device when it is not enrolled in some MDM (mobile device management) from the institution your work at and also to use your mobile data rather than the corporate network which as seen in this story can have really bad consequences on this bank worker. In our companies where we work is also very common to have people who do nothing all day except keep an eye of what workers are doing so it is never advisable to gamble in such institutions.

If the gambler who play the gambling in the work place mean, where he do the shortage work.Seems this gambler was in support work of IT sector,if he is from development sector of IT.He will have any free time to play the gambling and he need to answer all the client questions.Or else this gambler should do the manual work for the survival,So he will have some additional time for the gambling.Secondly the gambler who play the game at the work place will place with pressure of being captured. So he will play the game with less concentration, the outcome of such game will be mostly negative at the end.

Its never been right not ethical on playing or doing something specially on your work hours. It is really just that common sense that you shouldnt really be doing anything in work hours. If you do get caught then expect on what would really be the consequences on which it will really be that a huge effect when it comes to your work and could be ending up on getting fired once you do get caught.

As a worker or employee then it will really be that understandable that we should really be that obeying companies rules or wherever we are really that working. On the time or moment that you do find yourself
dealing up with something which it might be that potentially a reason that you would be fired then its better to avoid it at all cost or trying out to deal up something in secret.
They are really that sensitive for their workers possible activity specially dealing up with gambling.

If crypto wasn't involved, do you think this employee would have gotten fired?

100%

It doesn't matter if he uses crypto or not, it was about gambling . They even said it themselves that he was found to be habitual gambler. They did not focus on the currency that was being used.

For a bank this is a liability as gamblers often fall into debt and people in debt may be trying to take advantage of their workplace, especially if that workplace happens to hold a lot of money Wink

Most of us don't know how the State works. The employee wouldn't.take the Bank to court in such case instead he would have moved on and invest in bitcoin with the small amount he.has gather from the bank and a worker. In private work or job, one day you will be fired. So you have to prepare your mind at all times. And probably he gambling openly which is the mistake he did. In this modern world where there are devices to login to the Internet and gamble any game of your choice without anyone knowing. And he an addicted gambler that was why people noticed him. Amd another thing is South Korea might be a crypto forbidden zone.

I believe that it would be the rule of their company to not gamble. I know that in my country, you can't get a job in the public sector if you have registered a casino account, you also can't get a job in the public sector if you have previously worked in a casino.

I think that in South Korea, in his bank, there would be a rule that prohibited gambling to employees and this user abandoned that rule, that's why he got kicked. Btw if you are someone in a high position, you aren't kicked that easily but I assume this person was an average employee. Crypto is not the case here, he would be kicked anyway but I don't know why the court sided with the bank, that's why I think it would be in TOS of the bank and they kicked him fairly.

If true that the bank worker was gambling during his or her working hours, then he/she wasn't doing the right thing because no matter the kind of job you do that provides income for you, you are not supposed to divide your attention. However, gamble is what supposed to be done at free time. Actually, the reason why the bank fired the worker that was gambling might probably be because he has been warned several times.

Yes, because gambling is gambling no matter what you staked with.

My appraisal of the laws in place for South Korea seem to allow crypto use but it is heavily regulated which is also true of banking due to its core structure within the economy.  They have not just normal legal requirements but demands by their central bank for exact protocol and adherence in business.

The most important details in this case remains the job responsibilities and sector.  To continue with his personal hobby of gambling would have been breaking a contract, not that I'm going to argue the contract is fair to him personal but professionally it would be upheld by a court as a valid agreement.
Its not dissimilar to requirements in many banks all over the world, unfortunately it is a demanding job to do.

I think anything they were doing habitually that was taking away from their time at work would have gotten them fired.  Whether that is gambling, porn, video games, stocks, crypto trading, memes, nfts, etc.  I doubt his boss cared much what he was doing, only that he wasn't doing his work.  That makes you wonder if he were a high performing employee, what sort of nonsense would his employer put up with as far as gambling before letting him go.

That would be the grounds for their employer to fire that person. Since if they didn't see anything wrong and the person who's into that activities doesn't showing any bad performance on his job also risk for his fellow employee then for sure that they would never think or go into that situation to fire him out especially if the employee is good performer in his job.

But since the news spread out is the person get into that situation then I guess they cannot take it more longer and the management need to take action before everything goes worse.

People need to know that they should not let their selves caught up by addiction since it will really never give any good results to them.

When a thing turns habitual surely it'll kill time. One such thing had taken place with employee. It is not about gambling, as said whatever he had done apart from his assigned task during the work hours is going to stop his productivity as well as the progress of the firm. This is well understood by the Boss and he had fired the employee.

I said before that this mistake was not caused by gambling but by an employer's playing at the wrong time. The company should have a department that supervises workers and nurtures them if there are problems like this happen again, don't get fired right away before the issue is clear so that the situation can not make a one-sided disadvantage. A problem like this will occur happen on the next time if the company doesn't have a specific rule on how to work in that office because gambling sites around the world have been played very often by workers during working hours.

There is a lot of fear about a person who is addicted to gambling because when he does not have money, he will engage in various bad deeds to arrange money for gambling and will think of embezzling other people's money. I think it would be better for us to have no relationship with such a person. But yes, gambling is not a crime, but for that we have to enjoy gambling in our free time. There are some people who have lost all their money to gambling and become destitute, such people should quit gambling because they have become completely addicted to gambling. One should never become addicted to gambling because gambling can ruin our beauty and life.
