There's different periods of time: a day, a week, a month, a year. And for all of them I have different "breaking points", as you call them. If I lose during my gambling session 5 times more than I can easily afford to lose in one day - I quit. That's actually not a big tragedy because I can make up for that with not gambling for 5 days afterwards. But if I'd lose in a month 5 times more than I can afford to lose in a month, that would constitute a pretty big sum and to make up for that I would have to live without gambling for half a year. It would be pretty hard for me so I'm trying not to let it get to that point.

Here's the reasons why I asked the above question;
I have a colleague that is has been into dept for the past 6 months because of debts accrued due to gambling.  At the end of the month he pays debts from his little salary so he ends up owing colleagues to just manage by till the month ends . And he complains bitterly of how he has been paying this depth for over these months and how it has even mentally affected him which inturn is affecting his performance at work as well.
At this point my only advice to him is to stop anything gambling when he is finally out of this depth because he is at his breaking point already. So what is your take on this issues?
Do you think he should continue gambling or he should stop?

You know, honestly, they have no right to complain because they are the one who made the decision they chose, so they should blame themselves. Sorry for the term, but they wanted it, yet they didn't think about how small their income is and yet it seems the amount they borrowed is quite large.

It's really just fun at the beginning, but once the total borrowed money runs out, that's when the consequences start the feeling when you have to pay the installments on the borrowed money. So, what will happen is just enduring it while paying little by little."

Given the case you described, I certainly think the best option is to stop his gambling habit, and it's clear he's experiencing a severe addiction. I would give up when I've lost all my money, because at that point, there's nothing else I can do. But perhaps those who are truly desperate will try to take out a loan, and the goal of the loan is to return to gambling, hoping to win, which could solve all their problems, including recovering their significant losses.

Reading your message reminds me of myself many years ago. It had gotten to the point where I was borrowing money from everyone I could. I even took out a sizable bank loan. I became so addicted that I didn't even realize what I was doing. Everything happened in a blur. I was so drawn into gambling that I became completely immersed in the whole process. This type of mentality is the reason why most people suffer huge financial losses. Its impact is felt in their family, society and in their personal life . If someone becomes excessively addicted, it becomes very difficult to get out of it. I have seen a person I know who was so addicted that even if he had money, he would gamble, he was ostracized from his family and society. Because his relationship with someone in the family is not good and he borrows money from people he knows and is close to. then after he lost , he cannot stay at home. I don't think that's necessarily the case. They could be addicted, but because their winnings were substantial enough to help them get close to their desired amount, they decided to stop and withdraw their winnings.

This is a very personal situation, we all reach breaking point for different reasons but some never even embrace it when it happens. If you feel like you've got a problem then that is the first indicator something is wrong - probably because it's on your mind so often, you've spent way too much time and money on it, you're prioritizing it over friends and family, and most of all because it stopped giving you joy - it just became robotic. Those are the times you really need to consider stopping entirely as you've lost self control and a partial fix will be too difficult for almost everyone.

Yes you are right. About 40% of gamblers are victims of such a situation. Gambling in such an aggressive way will bring a very bad time for a person.
