Being called a gambler, compliment or insult?

We all gamble here, that’s obvious. But outside this forum, when people around you casually call you a “gambler”, how do you actually take it?

Do you feel proud and see it as some kind of compliment, like someone who takes risks and knows what they’re doing. Or do you feel a bit insulted, like it’s something negative and not really something to be proud of?

Curious how others see it, especially since gambling means different things to different people.

Being called a gambler is not something one should be proud of in this part of world because it is seen as a wrong path to take and because of it's negative effects seen on people that gambles it makes people think anyone that gambles is going astray and is not useful in live due to the fact that people who gamble without control sold their personal belongings in other to fund their bets and still remain in gambling and this has discouraged so many people from associating with anyone they know is gambling.


But one thing I like about all the online gambling apps is that it makes gambling so private that even if you are gambling no one will notice and begin to call you a gambler, it's your phone to yourself and very private that if you don't disclose to people around you that you gambling no one will ever notice that you do gamble. It's cool to do it online than going to bet centers that people around will know you're gambling, when I was a kid my father warn me strictly not to gamble because it will make me poor so you can see the bad light people have seen gambling to be, so I won't feel proud of people call me that, but I will hide and gamble peacefully with the notice of many people to avoid being called a gambler.

I don't feel proud of it. Calling others as a gambler is an insult. When someone can call you with your name, why he calls you as a gambler? It shows no respect to you. It's kinda crazy when you'er seeing it as a compliment.

Maybe it depends on the situation. If I’m a winning gambler and someone calls me that, I’d probably take it as a compliment, but if I’m losing, it just feels like adding insult to injury and I’d be annoyed. These days though, most of us gamble online anyway, so nobody really knows. Only we know how we’re actually doing, and it’s up to us if we share it or not.

I guess that is just your mindset about it, you only feel comfortable to be called a gambler when you are winning and you feel offended  when you are called one when you are losing. There is no big deal to be called a gambler if you are not addicted, it is neither an insult or a compliment and it doesn't matter whether you win or lose it doesn't change the fact that you are still a gambler.

The choice to choose what we want is one good thing I see about life itself but our ability to be proud of path we have chosen is the second, some if not most have made there decision on the path to follow but finds it difficult accepting it. "Gambler" is like a neutral word to me in english, but if people says it with our local language or dialect it hits different, it could pass through you and it sounded like the same as irresponsible person, negative in a sense of your personality, that's why i never shared just to anyone with my gambling activity lol. However, it must be acknowledged that people have a strong need to gamble. The cryptocurrency market is also, to a certain extent, a game of chance. And now people are actively playing on the Polymarket prediction platform.  In other words, gambling is eternal. In my opinion, there's no shame in other people calling you a gambler. It's normal.🧏

At first, I will say that it depends on the location of the person who is being called a gambler. Some countries might be gamble friendly but her citizens frowns at it and not being cool with it and on the other hand it is legalised as an entertainment sports or activity in the country.  However, if one calls some one a gambler in that nation, it could be seen as an insult because majority of people there would not be into gambling as they would mean their words as they have spoken it and in so doing, they are seeing you as not serious while wasting your time to gamble.

I dont care where and when am called a gambler because  its my choice to choose that part after all engineers or doctors are proud of there path so also will I be as I was not forced to become a gambler.  It was because of this I mentioned choosing once path voluntarily and not because others do so.   I dont see gambler as a name that can put one in to problem at any place or time because i see nothing wrong with that name, gambling is all about risk taking  and nothing else and there is know success without risk. I am never for one day going to be ashamed of that name a gambler until I decide to give up on that path then only will I be ashamed of that wonderful name. Take it or leave it i am a gambler.

I can tell you that majority of the youths are into gambling so I doubt if people within that youthful age will create a wrong impression on someone who is gambling, except the person gambles irresponsibly. Aside calling the person wayward, gambling isn't an occupation so what's the need of addressing someone as a gambler if not to insult them or to ruin there reputation. People should be addressed by there name or occupation and not by calling them gambler. Even if the person is happy about being called a gambler how would others around look at him or how would they perceived him. When someone is being addressed as gambler people will only see him as an addict.

Well it depends on the scenario involved... For example if me and someone is having a verbal confrontation or a kind of physical disagreement, then he could very well be calling me a gambler as a way of insulting me, in that situation I will definitely take offense at it, and very well try to retaliate back. I don't need to call him a gambler as a way of retaliating, thus is coz there are so many way of retaliating without calling names....

In another scenario, if maybe will at the casino and one of my guy walks in and then calls me a gambler, that I wouldn't take offense with it because he didn't mean any harm he just said it as a way of probably hailing me or you know doing what friends does..

Maybe because we participate in online gambling, people in my area don't know much about me. But in reality, if it is thought that I am a gambler and people around me call me a gambler, then it is a kind of insult in my locality. Here, no one wants to have a good relationship with the gambler's family and does not want to help them financially and socially. If someone is called a gambler in my area, it is considered a shameful insult. So if someone calls me a gambler, I will definitely be insulted and it is a kind of abuse for me.

Okay, you’re making a lot of point here and it is very relatable as to what’s happening around my place. Here, you would even be ashamed to be attributed to being called a gambler especially if you’re not making money through it and spending heavily on betting without no positive result. The most populace here see gambling as a taboo, so you’ll be ashamed to be associated with one. In most gambling shops, you’ll only see people that are not used to online gambling that go there to bet because of the stigma. So calling one a gambler and how you react to it is usually in relation to the environment you live in and how you passive the name as in relation to what the community passive it as.

For someone that is not a gambler, I think they will be ashamed to be called a gambler because they don't like the name.
This should not be a problem for someone that has been known to be a gambler even if they are not a chronic gambler.
Gambling should be kept from people around and the mistakes of letting people know that you gamble can be a serious problem and something similar to this.

Gambling has been widely adopted in the developed world. Though gambling is seen as positively somewhere, in most places people consider gambling negatively. That is why as soon as they get the sound of gambling, the common people consider gamblers as addicted according to the previous idea. They think that if they gamble, they will lose and the person will start losing all his money. In a society where this idea exists, no one will want to ruin their reputation. In such a situation, no one will consider gambling as praiseworthy. People's perception towards gambling is changing according to how negatively people considered gambling a decade ago. After a decade, the hesitation among people about gambling will decrease a lot. People will accept gambling as a very common practice.

To me It depends the persons relationship with me. An irregular or unfamiliar individual calling me a gambler with some kind of attitude, I'll definitely take it as an Insult.. probably because he saw me somewhere gambling or something related to that so just wants to spit bars. But for a friend or someone very close, I'll see if as nothing.. they understand quiet well that I'm not addicted so it would simply be on jokes.
If we come to take a look at it, the society today sees gambling as something that's imprudent. They consider most gamblers are irresponsible so they may use word thats improper to address a gambler. Regardless of though, I dont get too familiar with people I don't know so I'll get offended when someone calls me a gambler in public with some weird attitude..
