Being called a gambler, compliment or insult?

If I don't want my family to know that I'm a gambler, I will not take it lightly to the person who calls me a gambler in front of them, not because I'm not a gambler but because they don't keep their mouth in place.

But if it's something I don't hide from people, I won't mind being called a gambler outside, but I hate people with loud mouths. There are occasions and places where they need to keep quiet and watch how people around react to certain things before they publicly voice out such.

Such people that think they can sabotage what you're hiding from your family members to know about as not to raise unnecessary chaos between you and them probably due to their stand about gambling. What I think can be best done is to make them look like clown about what they're calling you. There's a way you can make them look stupid with having to attack them back. Because attacking them I'm front of your people might make them believe there's something you're trying to hide.

Well, I feel that sometimes we should be the one to reveal to our family by our self  about what we're doing. Their reaction wouldn't last a dent on us compared to when it's being revealed by an outsider to them.

In place where I live, gambling or gambler has sort of a negative aura. If someone is called a gambler, that is done to point out that person isnt smart, dont have a good job, generally is a loser in life. Even though gambling has advanced from being few slot machines installed whenever it is possible to a large and luxurious casino, people live with past and gambler is considered as lazy unemployed (often drunk), who is wasting his life instead of «finding a job». Nobody use word gambler to call a person who like to risk. Gambling is used to insult.

You aren't far from the truth,  many people are still seeing gamblers as people with no hope and doesn't have a brighter future therefore shouldn't be associated with, they keep having that negative impressions about gamblers regardless the fact that not everybody that gamble are actually jobless just as they have always think.

Sometimes I just think we (gamblers) cause it all, because if at the first point we do what is right by gambling moderately and also didn't want to use it as a way of escaping poverty all this negative narrations about gamble wouldn't have stand perhaps it would have been proven wrong that their are still some few folks that gamble for fun. However, people's opinions about gamble as something with little or no reputation is all caused by we the gamblers because we failed by not doing what is right, therefore if we must be proud by being addressed as a gambler then we must start changing people's narration about gamble by doing what is right.

I agree. It's best if they know it. If we are called a gambler by other people, then it will mean nothing to them because they already know. Being honest about what we do makes life easier. No fights, no blame, or anything that would ruin the family.

In this era, it's not that hurtful anymore when someone is called a gambler. Almost a large percentage of people may have bumped into either a local online casino or an offshore one. People tend to be callous sometimes, and they do not care to be able to know when to say some certain things and the right places to say them. Just like you have said, it is better to call such a person to order immediately so they can know their place and not be loud-mouthed next time because occurrences such as these cast doubts on the persons repuation whenever they are called names, as such they do not want to go public or their family to know about. Sometimes, a quick response to such events would put such a person in place, and they would never repeat such nonsense again.

Actually i can say that it would be that something in neutral on which its not something a compliment nor an insult because this thing was createed in the first place about having fun and entertainment on which calling up someone a gambler isnt something that bad. Being a gamble here with related to the slots or online casino is not a good thing here in my country, tons of people are now playing casino regulated or not because they seen others making a bet of small amount and then seeing them make a roll and hitting a huge amount so they get envy to other people who are just casually betting and make a huge wins. But its not the same thing happens to them others getting addicted and seeking a debt. Currently in PH even streamers are promoting casino and its already a vulgar even government supported here with a large banners so the word of being a gambler here has already a negative image.

I live in a country that prohibits gambling so when someone calls me a gambler in a public place then I will be a little offended because gambling has a negative stigma in most societies, but sometimes it depends on the situation too, if for example the one who called me a fellow gambler and he said it when we were hanging out with other gamblers we knew then I felt normal, the point is I will feel offended when someone else I don't know and who is not a gambler hears the words that are thrown from a friend to me as a gambler.

1. If you win, you will be praised, because you feel good and great because you won big, in essence, your friend wants your money to give.
2. The harsh criticism around you because they see you keep losing, they think it's stupid to keep betting.

So if you don't want a lot of praise and insults then it's better not to ever reveal about your gambling game, it's better when you win or lose don't tell the news around your friends.

I was introduced to bitcoin-betting, where I made my first 1 million, backthen being called a gambler meant nothing to me, but the losses began. Gambling became a habit, i want to recover my losses. Back then, being called a gambler became offensive.

This depends totally on the context and how it is said by the person. Some people view gambler as one that takes risk calculatively and have understanding of probability, therefore in that way it can sound neutral or even positive slightly. Yet in a daily society, the word mostly holds a negative meaning as a lot of people associates it with addiction, financial issues, or irresponsibility.

From my personal view, I am of the opinion that it should not define who a person is. When gambling is only a little form of entertainment and is done with control, the label do not really matter. You're right, it depends on who says it and what environment we live in. My friends and I often joke about gambling, calling each other skilled gamblers and so on. But it's just a joke because we all know that we are people who like to gamble.

But if it's said by someone we know dislikes gambling, then it could be interpreted as an insult. However, I don't think it's a big deal, because we're aware that we do like to gamble. We can't control what other people say to us, but we can control how we respond.

You mean poor people are suffering a lot from criticism and they are not given the respect they deserve. I will blame anyone that is being called a gambler and there is no way you will be called a gambler if you don't gamble and allow people to know that you gamble frequently. I see this as a compliment at times because of the type of people that are calling me a gambler or sees me as a gambler, when I see my fellow gamblers calling me a gambler it makes me proud because then they know that I must be making some good money or enjoying myself just as they are doing but then when I see the so-called righteous ones that don't gamble or they hide and do that, I know them calling me a gambler I begin to get disappointed because I feel like they are insulting me. In my region gambling is not something that is highly being praised but is being done by everybody, most people that do it are seen as irresponsible people hence I don't try to make it known that I am gambling. I only try to gamble in my room where I can do it without being judged because I want to look responsible and also to be seen as someone that is trying for himself and not like a loser the way they see gamblers.

People criticize who they want, based on their belief and mentality, and it doesn’t even matter the person's financial or societal status. If a person views gambling as a taboo (which I believe some people do, for some reason) the same way they’ll look at a poor gambler is the same way they’ll look at the rich gambler because to them it’s not about the status but the habit.
