Being called a gambler, compliment or insult?

We all gamble here, that’s obvious. But outside this forum, when people around you casually call you a “gambler”, how do you actually take it?

Do you feel proud and see it as some kind of compliment, like someone who takes risks and knows what they’re doing. Or do you feel a bit insulted, like it’s something negative and not really something to be proud of?

Curious how others see it, especially since gambling means different things to different people.

For me it is just an insignificant label, like being called a swimmer or a tourist. It is meaningless unless it has some extra intended offense from the person who said it. Generally the media has associated gambling with the negative aspects in the past, like the fact that people can get addictions or we see dire situations where people have lost a lot of money in a short time frame. Then again there are positive representations where people game the system against casinos or get lucky enough to make a big windfall win. You have to understand the context and whether it was meant as an insult, but frankly I'd just ignore it unless somebody is telling you that because of bad reasons - like you've spent rent money instead of paying the bill.

It's true that the word "gambler" has two possible meanings. Sometimes it's used to praise, sometimes to criticize. Some people are known for being good gamblers; these people don't become good gamblers out of nowhere, they know how to time things right and control their impulses. No one has ever called me a gambler, but I would have liked to be called a good gambler.

No one in real life ever called me a gambler, so I can only assume how would I react. I wouldn't take it as an insult for sure. First, if he gains from gambling and second, if he loses. But it is possible to create two different feelings with the same word. Suppose you won $500 in gambling, in this case, when someone calls you a gambler, you may take it as a compliment that he is saying this to you because of the money you won. But suppose you lost $500, in this case, if someone calls you a gambler, you may feel that he is talking to you in a bad way and at that time, the statement you received from someone as a gambler will seem insulting to you. So I think the same word will create two different reactions in both situations.

Well I think the word gambler meaning truly depends on the context which people called you as well as the environment interacting you  with, Gamble here at forum mostly used to describe someone who love flirting with risks, especially when it come to crypto trading or some sort of betting discussions. But when it come to  real life it's sound somehow negative favor depending on where you belong. Personally I am from a Muslim country Pakistan so here culturally as well as religiously gambling isn’t considered something people love to identify himself proudly.

But yeh online I don’t take that label too seriously as his meaning define complete different situations, but yeh offline it’s definitely not something I would love to take it as a compliment.

Does it mean that if people talk insults about you, you will not care about that as well? I also dont care much what people talk about my gambling experience, I would not pay attention if they call me gambler once, maybe twice. But if they keep on saying gambler-gambler-gambler and talk behind my back, I would ask for explanation and later maybe ask to keep mouth shut. Even though I dont care much, I dont like when people talk about me (I think everyone like when people talk about their achievements, but when some people talk bad or neutral about them, it is not that pleasant).

Honestly it matters in what context it's being said.. otherwise sometimes it sounds offensive sometimes you just don't need to pay attention to it for it to get to you.. others the profitable ones embrace the name because they are making profits from it and makes sense this way as it's their bread and butter.

Surely it wasn't something to be proud, I mean If you were called as gambler here in a country it's most likely that you are not doing well in your life and you are mostly destroying your life in gambling, not really doing good when it comes to your finances, I mean gambler here was just a completely negative word and if you gamble it is all a bad idea even if you know how to control yourself or you know what you are doing, it is all going to be the same you are being judge as someone who is not great with money, or someone that is careless about your money.

I dont really mind but I guess we could all agree that being called a gambler was not something to be proud of right, I mean it's already enough to gamble on private, there was no need to get the gambler title because it wasn't something to be proud of, Here in my country it's always better to prevent that kind of habit, and i believed on that too, we already know that gambling was not really something as a source of income, just for entertainment something like that, for the most part there was no need to gamble for anyone, most likely there are just getting influence by some people, you could be rich, you could earn money without doing gambling.

That's the difference in terms of capabilities, when a person is poor people who sorrounds him can easily criticize him and tag him to whatever intent they wanted to be, while if the person is capable, they can only think or secretly tag but they can't exposed what they intend about criticizing as they knew that there's a conviction or a risk that may bring them if they'll tag a person who don't like or who don't accept criticizm.

You mean poor people are suffering a lot from criticism and they are not given the respect they deserve. I will blame anyone that is being called a gambler and there is no way you will be called a gambler if you don't gamble and allow people to know that you gamble frequently. It is our duty to hide all our gambling activities from people we don't trust or people that can insult us tomorrow because they have seen us gamble multiple times.

Something that you need to take a better care, allowing someone you don't trust to see you playing or to see doing your gambling activities as like what you said, they can criticize and exposed your activities, it's on how you deal with discreetly gamble if you don't want someone to throw bad impressions on you, but for those who doesn't care, they are more busy doing their own things than listening or wasting time with what others wants to tag them.

Man, you don't have much faith in humanity, do you? Some people, indeed, are like you said, but not all of them. So, if they are calling you a gambler, while in reality you are an addicted gambler, maybe it's worth listening to them and try to get rid of your addiction. Sometimes, even total strangers may say something that is relevant and will help you if you will listen.

I think what is important is how you see yourself or what you think about yourself as a gambler. People words wouldn't get to you that much if you know that you gamble responsibly. Being an insult would be just that basing up on how you would be recognizing it because at the time that you would be gambling then its normal that people would be just that simply trying out to have that kind of common impression that you are already addicted into it on which means that on the moment that you do gamble then you cant be able to make someone not to avoid on thinking up this way. It is just that depending on how you would be that treating it out and would be having that whether you do take it seriously or you would be that trying out to make yourself that just ignore it out because you do know that you are just that playing gambling for the sake of fun and entertainment.
