Both situations can actually be a trap, depending on the state of mind of each gambler.

I once compared my experience with my friend and I had a dark past in gambling which started with a big win that made me curious, without me realizing it, I went deeper into the world of gambling, losing control.

Meanwhile, my friend experienced an addiction only because he experienced his first loss in a slightly larger amount and he felt emotions constantly chasing every time he lost money in gambling.

Its like I heard this analogy over times already. But in all of those discussion, Id say you are right. First big win ending up a trap for most since they wanna win again and do it over and over again, until that first win becomes a loss now and instead of increasing those wins they are accumulating losses which they dont wanna admit cause of addiction...

I sure as hell didn't get a big win or anything close to a win at the first time I tried gambling activities. Infact, I lost consecutively and even made up my mind not to gamble again, but today, I still gamble.
I would not say it's probably because of the kind of friends and colleagues I find myself around, but they sure contributed and well, I have fun with gambling mostly when I am in a boring environment that requires me to distract myself to stay active and awake.

Everything will depend on the gambler's character. If from the start of gambling, the gambler has already made good preparations, including managing finances and setting limits, I think there is no problem with big wins at the beginning. 
But there are gamblers who naturally become greedy and uncontrollable when they get a big win early on. What happens is the ambition to win even bigger by continuing to play. Wins still act as a stimulus for the gambler, because that is indeed what they are looking for.

Depending on the gambler and what he/she believes about gambling that will determine what the outcome of his first winning will be in the future. Because there are some individuals that despite winning big or losing big, it definitely wouldn't stop them from coming back to gamble if they wishes to. But to be honestly speaking, first winning on a casino are usually a trap, as it increases the gamblers dopamine boost of good feeling, that is likely to trigger such gambler into gambling on that same exact game more and more, while having the mindset of winning big too. But it's just sad sometimes, such gambler don't usually win big again, but end up losing more. This was the exact same feeling i had the first time I won a huge amount in gambling, I was still very naive then, and that one win opened me up to a whole new world of possibilities that i never saw in gambling before. Yes of course, i'll even described it as setup. Your first big win shapens you, it determines how your next and most occuring wins would be in the gambling industry. Why most people end up failing? It's simply because they get carried away.

I want to share something in my mind and i think many people will relate to it. So many peoples think losing is what traps gamblers. But i think sometimes it is the opposite.

It is the first big win.

Let me Explain . When someone wins big early it creates a strong belief in their mind. They start thinking i can do this again because it feels easy and  real. That moment stays with them. And after that every time they play they are not just playing the game  they are chasing that first feeling again and again . Even when they lose they does not see it as a warning. They see it as I just need one more good run.

This reminds me of something similar.

When someone tries Weed for the first time the experience can go both ways i mean 50 50 chances of smoking again . Because some peoples feel relaxed and happy and they keep going back to it. While others feel fear or discomfort sometimes increased blood pressure and heart rate maybe even anxiety and they never touch it again.

That first experience shapes everything.

Gambling works in a same way. If your first experience is a big win it can pull you deeper. If it was a bad loss maybe you would have stopped early.

Addiction is more of an aquired dopamine dysregulation. Which points more in the direction of an illness than getting trapped. But yes, as far as to your original question is concerned, I believe it is a sort of "quiet trap"

Also, just because there are two outcomes does not make the chances 50-50. The math behind that statement does not support what happens in reality. Someone who is more prone to addiction due to his/her genetics has a more likely chance of getting trapped in an addictive substance abuse or gambling problem than someone who is just curious and has no such biological constitution. That is only one such example. Another example would be that considering the length of a human life, it is more likely that eventually a person will smoke weed again than not smoke it. Especially if he/she is exposed to it more often (maybe because they live in a country where it is legalized for recreational purposes).

Totally depend on people perspective. Some might say it was a trap, but others who is a gambler may say it's a jackpot. I know many said it as a hit and run strategy, but the world is big.
