OP already answered the main question of this post, and I totally agree with. I believe most of the successful or rich people used and maximized their skills to start or run a business rather than the degree that they have. Yes, degree might be needed to some kind of businesses but it is not the main ingredient for a business to thrive, it might be only a tool but skill matter most because this will get you going especially during times of uncertainties and challenges. Skill is like an immunity that whatever happens, as long as you have it you'll make or find a way. So for me, I will take a risk to start a small business even without a degree as long as I have the skill. Because later on after using it to start a business, I may get a degree or trainings that will further help me become more successful.

Why do so many people prefer starting a business over getting a degree? Because a successful business can bring much higher income, while a job after a degree usually has a fixed salary. A degree takes about 4 years and costs a lot. A business can start with small capital and might grow 4 times in those same 4 years. Plus, many graduates still struggle to find good jobs.
•Do you think a degree is important to run a business, or can skills and experience replace it? •What would you choose: start a small business without a degree, or get a degree first and then start a business?
A degree is absolutely unnecessary for starting a business. A degree is absolutely necessary if you want to apply for a job, thereby having something substancial as your third-party acknowledgement of credibility by other a credible party (university). to verify your knowledge and skills. Would you want to hire someone as a self-taught surgeon if he has no degree? That is too risky. Of course not. But you are not hiring anyone when starting a business. You are investing in an idea. But does having a degree make starting a business much easier and far more likely to succeed? Yes, definitely. So get a degree if you want to improve yourself as a person or verify your knowledge to other people.

In most cases, you find people going through formal education because they want to get a career and with that career be able to earn a living.
For those in business, they feel they are already earning a living and some wouldn’t have a care in the world about some formal education.
There are always those who appreciate knowledge and understand it’s importance that, despite haven’t built a business, they still know they could be able to do exploit with knowledge and so, they go ahead to get knowledge, build network and explore endless possibilities in the business world.

Going to school and getting a degree is an advantage to you and this could actually give you more opportunities in the long run but there are no guarantees of this which is why it's important to run a business as a back up plan because there is a chance that getting a degree might not give you the opportunities you are looking for when you need it.
There is a certain value those with a degree has In the society, this has become a social construct and a lot of people still value education today even though it does not automatically mean that you are going to get an opportunity or a job. It is better to have a degree and also run a business, they are both important.
Exactly both are very important going to school and have a degree and also having a business doing are all good, if you have a degree and you don't have money you will be look down in the society but as a business man that has money with out a degree people will value you more than some one with a degree but nothing to write home about. In all we do in life it's very important to have money no matter what, you can still be doing business and don't have enough money the society won't still regard you same thing as having a degree with out having money also. I think it has been a very long time when people with degree are respected, even though they don't have money they always respect them since they are very few in the society. Right now money rules the world and that is why we have to look for it because it is what people are listening to now, in my own Society degree does not have anything like respect again because they are just everywhere without money, getting a degree is very good and also important but we should make sure that we have a skills that we will use to support ourselves. We usually see people who does not go to school at all, but they have employed people that have degree to work for him, I think we can see the power of money, degree cannot control anyone this time around, so we should all go and look for money.

Of course, if it leads to success a skill or skill is more promising than a degree. Basically, a degree will not help completely, but the combination of skill and skill is certainly a very good thing. What sometimes makes me annoyed is that there are some people who are arrogant with their titles but when they are told to show skills or skills that match their titles, the results are embarrassing. Maybe we can get a degree later when many people know that we have good skills in doing business as you say. A degree is absolutely unnecessary for starting a business. A degree is absolutely necessary if you want to apply for a job, thereby having something substancial as your third-party acknowledgement of credibility by other a credible party (university). to verify your knowledge and skills.

Indeed, no matter how high a degree a person has, it is not necessary to start a business because even people who do not have a degree can start a business if they have the intention, capital and others, especially if supported by having good skills and skills that will make him able to take a business that has a great chance of success later. The other side of having a degree makes us sometimes easier to get connections because one of the good sides is that it makes us look like we are respectable and have a good educational history. Other statements not everyone who has a degree can work with certainty.

Going to school will enable us to get a career that can make us money when we start practicing it. Going to school does not stop anyone from doing business that will be earning them money but many have lost their mindset thinking once they get a good career, they will be able to get a good job and live better lifestyle to their convenience. We are in the 21st century where getting a good career may not determine your success in life. Your career may not pave a way so it's better for people to start having the entrepreneurship mindset before they starts building their career or when they are building their career so that they will not become stranded when they don't have a job yet.

In my opinion. yes, it is still best to have both degree and business. Or at least good education that can back-up your business. You should have the knowledge about how you can manage your business in a profitable position.

Degree doesn't automatically help you build connection or make you look more respectable. It's recognition that you've gone through proper education and training and gained a certain level of knowledge. You don't need a degree to start a business, that's true. However, as I mentioned, a degree can give you a certain knowledge base. It doesn't guarantee success, but when that foundation is combined with capital, skill, and experience, you can have an advantage over someone who only has capital and skill. You don't need a degree to run a business, but getting one can still be necessary if you want to improve your chances of success.

If this is based on the stories of those richest businessmen today who had no educational attainment when they started their businesses decades ago but eventually became a billionaires thru determination and hardwork, then yes, that was possible in the past... However, if we look at todays business environment then having a degree, big capital, strong connections and a reliable network is the main recipes in building a successful business. Those connections can help businessman to find investors, business partners and valuable opportunities... Having a degree is also important because we cannot predict how long yourbusiness will survive in the industry... If your business eventually fails or circumstances change, your degree can serves as your backup and provide you with other career opportunities.

Again, Smartvirus is also right. Because Smartvirus did not actually say that every person or a certain 70% of people study just for a job. Smartvirus actually said that in most cases, earning a profession or a living through that profession is the main objective. And I will definitely agree with Smartvirus's statement. If you look around you, you will understand that most people are studying because they need a job. If you ask them, they will tell you that after studying, they will get a job and then spend good time with their family. Although the motive of rich people may be different. But usually the motive of most poor people is to earn their living in some way or the other.

But usually the motive of most poor people is to earn their living in some way or the other. You have to understand that no one is born with a full understanding of life or knowing exactly what they want. Our goal, ambition, and dream develop and change over time based on what we learn, what we experience, and what we see in life. So its not wrong to say that most people pursue formal education because they want a career they can make a living from. But it would be oversimplifying thing to say that this is their only and ultimate goal. In reality, 70% of entrepreneurs around the world have a degree, and among the remaining 30% who don't, most have still attended university. Is it true to say that those who pursue a degree are only looking for one career? https://www.cnbc.com/2016/08/11/nearly-a-third-of-the-worlds-billionaires-didnt-graduate-college.html

Maybe people who prefer business over degree took Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Michael Dell, Phil Knight life experience and decided to focus on business, but get degree after they succeeded in business. People that I have mentioned attended college, but later dropped it and dedicated themselves to work, build their companies, careers, and only then got degrees. When you hear that someone without education has millions and billions, you start to question yourself if you should waste precious time sitting on lectures, than earning money.

Degrees are only useful if you do something that can't be done without. For example doctors and lawyers can't operate without a degree. Also a big bunch of the richest/most successful people don't hold degrees; they just manage those who do.

What @GeorgeJohn said is true but is because of the lack of coherence in some of his statement that's why you couldn't completely understand his point but however I agree with him because not everybody that's going to university today has a purpose to build a career from their study because if you have already gotten a career that has made you a millionaire before enrolling on the formal education I don't think you would depend on it after graduating, so actually the only purpose they will have for it is knowing that they have completed their education and will no longer be seen as someone who isn't a degree holder.

A degree can provide us with certain knowledge in a particular field, which we can later use to pursue a well-paid job or start our own business. But what formal education definitely cannot provide us with, or is unlikely to provide us with, is the experience we gain from actually running our own business. I believe that this experience is essential, because it makes it easier to get started and helps us make fewer mistakes.
