They could have added anti-tamper measures.
...
When I bought a Trezor, it came with many anti-tamper measures, up to annoying stickers that leave hard to remove sticker residu. But it helps improve the device's security.
I think the people at Ledger talked about the missing anti-tamper stickers years ago and said that they see no point in adding them because they add a false sense of security. The stickers can be be removed, the residue can be cleaned, and new anti-tamper stickers can be placed at the same place after opening and inserting hardware implants. The result would be a manipulated device with a sticker on that makes it look like it wasn't.

Ledger Recover doesnt store keys, according to what Ive read. Instead, it kind-of identity-verify you not entirely KYC-verify , only then will Ledger Recover make a request for the fragmented Private K/e/y (divided into three parts which goes to 3 different third party “CERTIFIED” custodian yada yada. (thats the best I could come up with apologies for not being “Dandy” in explaining. Smiley )

Storing keys isn't the issue.

Giving internet access to the keys on your hardware wallet is the issue. That's what attackers will be trying to reverse engineer. Why try to attack an encrypted fortress when individuals don't even understand they've left their front doors wide open?

To say it another way: Why attack the bank if everybody in town keeps money under their mattress and they leave their front door unlocked?

Ledger gave the internet access to your keys. It's on every Ledger hardware wallet, as part of the Ledger Recover API. That's what thieves will be going after. That's what hardware wallets are supposed to protect you from.

Since you mentioned Dandy, here's a quote from the novel:

Quote
Love is the key to your heart.
This is the key to your front door.
It's lovely.

The API Ledger baked internet access to your keys into the firmware on your Ledger device. Hackers are surely using AI to reverse engineer that as we speak.

Every time a Ledger user turns on their hardware wallet, they have to wonder... "How do I know what data is really coming into and going out of this device?" No hardware wallet is supposed to be accessible over the internet. That's the entire point of owning a hardware wallet.

Hardware wallets were invented to let you sign Bitcoin transactions without having your keys accessible to the internet. Ledger literally baked internet access to your keys into their devices, but too many people don't understand how Bitcoin works, so they don't realize why that is a catastrophic risk.

For example, with any reputable hardware wallet, transactions work like this:

Your app sets up the transaction, but it lacks the keys, so creates an unsigned transaction which it sends to your hardware wallet. Your hardware wallet takes the data from that unsigned transaction and it generates a signature using your keys. THAT SIGNATURE IS ONLY VALID FOR THAT EXACT TRANSACTION. That's important to understand.

Your hardware wallet then sends the signature for that specific transaction to your app, which makes the transaction valid.

Your app never had access to your keys.

Ledger broke that model by giving internet access to their device as part of Ledger Recover. It's a time bomb. The device is never supposed to be accessible over the internet.

Ledger cannot be trusted.

I'll say it again: Too many people don't understand what hardware wallets actually do. A hardware wallet should never be accessible over the internet. Never. Never. NEVER. No exceptions ever.

Ledger cannot be trusted.

A sticker would still be useful, as it would force thieves to waste time cleaning and making new stickers. But I want to point out something else: many Ledger users are amazed at how easily the device opens with a regular kitchen knife, and how easily it reassembles without leaving any traces of the case being opened. This is a poor decision by whoever designed the Ledger case.

This means that the weighing method isn't very suitable for kitchen scales.
Because the marginal values, taking into account all the accuracy, for example, for the Nano X are:
34-1-1 = 32
while on other kitchen scales, another Nano X would be
34+1+1 = 36  ...I think it can be even 37.

And in general, the weighing method is bad, it’s better to try to disassemble the device.

You're absolutely right.
Here's an example of a guy whose wallet model X weighs 38 grams. He reported that after disassembling it, he was convinced it didn't contain implants.

Shocked

It looks plausible to buy a device, compromise it, and return it to the shop for a refund.
That’s because they knew the store will restock it back.. but why restock what’s been returned as a defective product, that’s probably the only convincing complaint that can be attached to get a refund .
Many shops allow customers to return products if they changed their mind after buying. It doesn't need to be defective.

If you ordered it online, you're even allowed to return it if you ordered from Ledger directly. That makes me wonder how thoroughly they check their return shipments before selling them again. Would it be possible to compromise their own supplies this way?

Quote
Ledger told authorized resellers never to restock returned products, and urged buyers to avoid unauthorized sellers.
I highly doubt they'd do that. If a large electronics chain receives a seemingly unopened box returned by a customer, I'd be surprised if they don't just put it back in the store. But even if they do take them out, it wouldn't be too far fetched to just walk into the store, and put a compromised box on their shelf. Or it could be an inside job by bribing an employee.

I don't think that anti tamper stickers prevent this kind of thing. It makes it just harder, as we have seen the anti tamper checks on the hardware in this case have failed too.
You said it already: it makes it harder. Security doesn't come from just one thing, it's the sum of all things combined.

Quote
I am looking for a measure or method that would make this completely impossible
There is no 100% security.

That, right there? That's game over.
If that would be true, it would have been game over many years ago. Marketing is powerful enough to sell people bad products.

Quote
Ledger falsely stated in writing that their devices offered a level of security capability which the devices were not capable of delivering.
You're talking about the company that also falsely stated in writing that your keys can never leave the device. They lie. It's documented. People still fall for it.

I wonder if there is a globalist (i.e. world central bank) conspiracy to make self custody as scary as possible.
My country is planning to do exactly that:
This is the latest plan for 2028:
Wie crypto’s in zijn eigen wallet heeft staan, gaat belasting moeten betalen op winst hierop, óók als die winst nog niet is verzilverd. Dat geld moet je dus wel hebben liggen. Wie crypto’s heeft via een bank of een reguliere beleggingsrekening, betaalt vanaf 2028 alleen als de winst wordt verzilverd.
In short: if you own your Bitcoin keys, you'll be taxed 36% on the annual unrealized gains, even if you don't sell them. But if you give your coins to Blackrock, you're only taxed when you sell them!

Didn't Europe recently enact regulations that require users to prove they own the address before moving funds from CEXs to private addresses?
The "travel rule" implementation varies per exchange: some ask just to confirm "yes that address is mine", others ask to "connect your wallet" or "upload an image". The registration hunger combined with increasing data leaks are just a disaster waiting to happen.

I'm wondering why the implants aren't the same. The materials aren't the same. The arrangements aren't the same. The differences are significant. One has 8 soldering points, for example. The other has only 4. In other words, there are most likely more than 1 or 1 group of attackers.

Or, the attack has been an ongoing experiment; meaning, changes or improvements were made along the way. Attempts were pretty much trials and errors. Some worked, some didn't.
That makes perfect sense. It's probably both: different groups of attackers working on their own hardware hacks.

Considering the number of devices involved, I would have expected many alarm bells if the software could detect the tampered hardware. So my guess it it couldn't find it.
according to : https://www.tibane.net/research/ledger-nano-x-implant#timeline
An “implant” doesnt trigger Ledger’s “Genuine Device” check because the implant never touched the Secure Element(the chip). …
So basically, the "secure element" is simply bypassed because the words have to be printed on the screen:
A hardware wallet keeps your secret inside a hardened chip, the secure element, which is built to resist an attacker with a lab. It still has to show you the 24 words once, when you set it up, and to show them it has to send them to the screen.

The implant waits on that path. It is a second, tiny computer soldered onto a genuine Ledger Nano X, wired to the screen’s data lines. It doesn’t try to break the secure element. It only watches the pixels go past, picks out the letters of each word, and stores them. A cellular modem with its own SIM card and antenna then sends them to the attacker. The wallet has no idea it is there, and Ledger’s “genuine device” check passes, because the secure element really is genuine.

By that same logic, they can just as well remove all other security measures. Everything can be tampered by someone resourceful and patient enough to do so. Let me use a very Dutch example: it's kinda like a bicycle lock: everyone knows it won't stop a thief, but the goal is to delay him a bit. If another bicycle is easier to steal, he'll take that one. In this case, Ledger was the easy one to tamper with.

A sticker would still be useful, as it would force thieves to waste time cleaning and making new stickers.

Stickers aren't effective. I'm glad Trezor does it, but thieves will remove the sticker, hack the device, and add their own stickers to make it look legit.

I'm not badmouthing Trezor at all. I really do think Trezor is doing their best to do everything right (and Trezor is what I recommend for newcomers). But we're entering a new era... and I'll be the first to admit I wasn't vigilant enough about warning people.

I really thought this 2024-2028 Bitcoin cycle would be the era of Five Dollar Wrench attacks. I literally wrote a novel about a Bitcoin thief in hopes of encouraging people to keep themselves safe from social engineering attacks. Those attacks are real, and they're only going to get worse... but I thought we were still a few years away from these hardware wallet attacks.

With each passing year, I become more convinced that DIY hardware wallets like SeedSigner (or better yet, the ShieldSigner fork, or Krux) are the way to keep your Bitcoin secure. That, and generate your seed phrase yourself, randomly, by hand to prove you know it's truly random. Eventually, I need to write up a post on that. Dice are okay... but only if you confirm the dice rolls generate the same seed on two independent devices (in other words... how do you prove the device took your dice rolls and correctly used them to generate the seed it gave you?).

We're entering a new era. Thieves are getting more sophisticated. The good news is, tools exist to keep us safe. The bad news is, those tools don't come with a marketing campaign and a corporate logo. To do self custody right, going forward, people need to stop relying on cool gadgets and start doubling down on learning how to keep a seed phrase safe. It's not hard, but it's a complex conversation for sure.

As a person who works in the field of printing design, it is easy for me to make anti-tampering stickers like this because it can be Custom or made like the original stickers made.

But some Original VOID stickers with Holograms and special codes may be a marker, but some other supporting methods are needed for higher security such as cryptographic verification of devices,
protecting devices from the Design to Distribution stage, because the device distribution chain also needs to be strictly audited.

And the Licensee as a Distributor or Reseller also needs to be strictly audited if the company is acquired by someone else,
but there is no official report from Ledger about further audit on the Cryptobilis Acquisition Process.

Update from Ledger Donjon on the CryptoBilis investigation 🔽

https://x.com/Ledger/status/2109896739985453358

If you lost funds, Ledger advices to file a report with local law enforcement. They didn't mention how much was total lost & looks like they won't compensate the victims even though everyone bought from an authorized seller.

Stickers aren't effective.

I'm not claiming they're a panacea. But they wouldn't be a bad idea as an additional security measure. Because they'd create an extra headache for criminals when attempting counterfeiting. And even if it delayed their compromise, saving even one Ledger client, it would be worthwhile.

It turns out the criminals are careless. This is proven by Mark's latest post:
Carelessly compromised wallet was spotted in Singapore Airport.

https://x.com/MagicalTux/status/2109916873689280900

And you're going to try to prove to me that hardware wallet manufacturers shouldn't create obstacles for counterfeiting their devices?

Update:

MediaMarktSaturn has removed Ledger products from its stores and online platforms amid reports of tampered hardware wallets.

“The MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group has removed all of the manufacturer’s products from its stores and online platforms and is in contact with the manufacturer. We take this incident very seriously.”

https://cointelegraph.com/news/mediamarkt-pulls-ledger-wallet-security-incident

this is a serious blow to Ledger's reputation and many retailers will likely pull the devices from sale. if the company does not take steps to restore confidence in its products, it faces bankruptcy.

in the following tweet, accompanied by these images, Mark Karpeles confirms that the Ledger Flex was also fitted with a spy implant!
this device was purchased this summer at the singapore airport.
the antenna installed here has the version AC-A2201-Flex-...-V1.2 and is most likely an upgraded version of V1.0

It's them VERY IMPORTANT to find an accurate scale. I'll probably go to a candy shop nearby, where they weigh the candies. I will bring my Ledger, and Trezor Safe 3.

My Ledger is clean/no implants/not tampered. If it's heavier or lighter on the candy store's scale, then adjust the Trezor's expected weight by how much heavier or lighter the Ledger was on that scake.

   ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Store scales aren't known for their accuracy. If you want a more or less accurate result, it's best to go to the pharmacy, as their scales are more accurate than kitchen and store scales.

You're actually right, ser. The candy shop's scale rounds off by five.

 - The Ledger weighs 21 Grams = The candy shop's scale rounded it off to 20 Grams.
 - The Trezor Safe 3 weights 14 Grams = The candy shop's scale rounded it off to 15 Grams.

I know my Ledger wasn't implanted because I opened it. But based on the weight of the Ledger on that scale, I believe the Trezor's weight tells me that it's not tampered with implants.

Many shops allow customers to return products if they changed their mind after buying. It doesn't need to be defective.
I get your point.. But, should hardware wallets be treated just like every other products and even if they must accept it, every product returned should have always gone back to ledger imo.
Quote
If you ordered it online, you're even allowed to return it if you ordered from Ledger directly. That makes me wonder how thoroughly they check their return shipments before selling them again. Would it be possible to compromise their own supplies this way?
Likely.. if they do it same way, just  like their resellers.

In my last post i actually tried to find if either Global-e or Ledger itself provided any return policy for resellers[ Global-e only act as their  sales facilitation partner] because if truly they accept bulk returns then their supply could be compromised if they don’t check any of those returns probably because it’s in bulk.

Quote
But even if they do take them out, it wouldn't be too far fetched to just walk into the store, and put a compromised box on their shelf. Or it could be an inside job by bribing an employee.
The last part is more achievable because of cameras.

According to this post from X, MediaMarktSaturn is suspending sales of all Ledger devices after a security researcher discovered two devices containing implants.
We are talking about 1000 stores in 11 countries.
The chain leading to the source of the compromise has not yet been built.

How long ago were the implants installed in the Ledgers?
Joe Grand received a message about a similar incident a year ago. Last August, he received a message from a man in Thailand who discovered a foreign implant in his Ledger. The man simply wanted to replace the battery in his device, but instead discovered circuit boards, batteries, wiring, and antennas.

I am sorry if this video was already shared. The Bitcoin Historian on X shared a video of a person who claims to have bought Ledger hardware wallets in different stores in Europe and found the same hardware implants in them. You can see how he disassembles a Nano X and finds the implant.
https://x.com/pete_rizzo_/status/2109731107495412105

The same account shared a quick video demonstrating how to disassemble a Ledger hardware wallet to perform a hardware integrity check. It's worrying how easy it is:

All electronic products have manufacturing tolerances.
When I was reading Reddit today, I noticed that when comparing the same models, users were panicking because of the differences in grams. 34, 35, 36... but all this is normal.

After reading this, I only realized that comparing the weight of our devices with the weight mentioned on the site will only make us more paranoid, even if we haven't bought them from Cryptobilis. I haven't bought mine from him, but it still bugs me, especially after reading everything and seeing all those comments from people panicking and openly saying what they have, where they hold their funds, and how much they have. Especially philipma1957 haha, he listed every wallet haha. Sorry bro, but these kinds of comments, combined with a few others, are enough to make me panic, even though I'm not in a panic state right now.

But the only option I can think of in a panic state is to move funds to CEXs haha, which I don't want to do.

Well, we should let this attack sink in a bit before doing something crazy. It's time to learn about the things we ignored at the start. Air-gapped wallets are the last hope now, but if something happens to them too, that's where everyone will think the end is near.

According to this post from X, MediaMarktSaturn is suspending sales of all Ledger devices after a security researcher discovered two devices containing implants.
We are talking about 1000 stores in 11 countries.
The chain leading to the source of the compromise has not yet been built.
...

When I bought my Ledger Nano S from Best Buy in the U.S., I remember opening the device to check if everything was okay

Thank goodness I was a hardware nerd who liked to tinker and open up devices just to check them out, just for the pleasure of seeing how they worked
That’s actually pretty scary, to be honest, a major company having its hardware tampered with  Shocked

Being your own bank comes with responsibilities.

It's why there are armed guards with shotguns at the entrance of the banks and they pat every visitor down before entering, and the clerks ride in armored cars with private security or law enforcement when they transport cash.

If you hold a substantial amount of crypto, it's time to start investing in security today.

What country is that? Here, banks removed the bullet proof glass a few decades ago, there's no armed security, nobody gets patted down, and they probably barely have money there anyway. Money is transported in armored cars, but without additional security, only "paint suitcases".

I used to say: "just buy a hardware wallet". But that's becoming less and less of a sure thing lately. How can a non-technical newbie invest in security to store his own Bitcoin keys if hardware wallets can't be trusted anymore?

This is the sort of news story that will one day make a great movie. It is the sort of thing paranoid people thought was going on with these hardware wallets the whole time. I wonder how many individuals fell victim to this scam right when they started implanting these devices. Nobody would have believed them…
