Apart from this being a positive step geared towards bitcoin adoption, I think It’s another step forward and an added utility value for bitcoin being accepted by banks as a form of collateral. Just like real estate or other physical assets this has also transmuted bitcoin from not just a speculative asset but into a real functional asset capable of being used for other purpose as this. But bitcoin price can also move quickly and market drops can reduce the value of the asset as against the loan which can be a thing of concern.

If only the banks won't mess up later, doing this means the banks knows your worth, you have an address and identity revealed, someone very bad can be working in the bank and sending your data out of the bank.

You said right. In any bank robbery that happened, there is always an insider, they have more disloyal workers than their loyal customers but they don't know. Not only data, many of their staffs steal from customers, there are many reported money diverted from customers accounts without traces, most is their hands work. You can imagine what they will do if they get their hands on Bitcoin.

Quote
One was exposed here, When you use a big property to take loan the prayer of banks is may you never be able to pay up so they can take over the property, and now Bitcoin?

It's a good news for people who want and likes the centralised advantages like this, but for people who prioritise their privacy it's definitely a no go road, we are only thinking about the positive side, what about the negative side?

We have worried so much about centralized exchanges and their custody behavior but this bank lending, I don't like it. There is going to be a lot of paper work if you are going to use banks as lending. The same money will take a lot of time to process and that depends on the amount of Bitcoin you are willing to collateral. When you need that Bitcoin, you are going to return the money and you will have to wait for days before you get the collateral back.

I don't just like the idea of this Bitcoin, the banks don't keep liquidity without doing nothing. They are going to put most into use to get back interest. There is so much at stake here.

However, one important thing is that now that someone accepts Bitcoin as collateral, they may not take out loans as often. Because Bitcoin will become so valuable that no one will want to deposit it as collateral and take fiat.

People with urgent needs will do it, and I think the loan term can also be adjusted for a short period, not for the long term. So from the borrower's side, there may not be too much doubt regarding price fluctuations. Anyway, the bank will still calculate the price risk for the funds being lent.
With this, Bitcoin really appears to function as an investment asset like property.
I bet the loan is targeted for company, some kind of B2B, because honestly it doesn't make sense for people with urgent need to borrow money against their bitcoin instead of selling it outright. Imagine having urgent need and you're only getting half of the collateral. Whereas a business with good bitcoin treasury could be in need of liquidity for expansion purpose, and many things. They may not be able to sell bitcoin because how their bitcoin treasury is structured, which in that scenario make more sense for a business to borrow against their own treasury instead of going through the complicated process.

A short example, imagine company like Strategy whose stock price is influenced by their treasury, a bitcoin sale would mean lower investor confidence, it could cause potential fall of stock prices but when they are only borrowing against their treasury for expansion or buying even more bitcoin, it's considered bullish. The bank is only providing the institutional financial tool.

Aside from Bitcoin volatility which can become an issue if it's price as at the time that it was used as collateral for a loan rises or drops significantly it can affect either the borrower or bank negatively I don't think that there are any other serious concerns. Anything that can make the adoption of Bitcoin to increase and for it to be used in real cases are welcomed developments instead of just holding for many without adding any utility aside from waiting for it to reach the peaks of bull runs. If tangible assets like real estate can be used as collateral I believe that adding an intangible asset like Bitcoin as collateral for loans is a big milestone for it's adoption.

If banks accept Bitcoin as collateral, then this is definitely good news. Because we may take USDT or other coin loans by placing Bitcoin collateral on various exchange platforms. In that case, we have some risk, but when our local bank directly accepts Bitcoin as collateral and gives us a loan in return, we will be able to do our Bitcoin holding better and at the same time we will be able to meet our urgent financial support by taking a loan from the bank. One of the reasons for not being able to hold Bitcoin is that if we invest in Bitcoin without being financially independent, we have to sell that Bitcoin for emergency purposes. But when we can take a loan from the bank against Bitcoin collateral, this problem will be solved, which will further increase the interest and opportunities of Bitcoin holding.

Crypto exchanges lending Bitcoin is not as interesting topic as banks themselves lending Bitcoin but honestly, a title is a little bit misleading because Korean bank lends Bitcoin to corporate clients and it's not really like banks accepting Bitcoin as a collateral if we keep average users in mind.

By the way, it's interesting that Korean banks can't just sell your Bitcoins if you default a loan, they need court order to sell your Bitcoins.

And the most interesting thing for me will be if banks accept Bitcoin as a collateral for regular people. That will be very interesting because Bitcoin is volatile and I wanna know how will they deal with the risks associated with its volatility because there can be a moment when it worths $100K and a day later goes down to $50K and that's the case when it's much better to default a loan than to pay it.

Do you think this is a good step for Bitcoin adoption, or could it create bigger problems during the next major market downturn?

This is good news.. it could allow companies to get loans faster by using their Bitcoin.. and since this service is offered by a regulated bank, it could provide legal certainty for companies that want to borrow money. I don't think this will cause that many problems, on the contrary, it might actually encourage companies that want to get involved in Bitcoin investment because instead of having to sell their Bitcoin to access cash, they now have the option to use it as collateral for a loan while still holding on to their assets.. Even though this option is still quite limited, it's possible that similar services could be offered by other banks and financial institutions in more countries as the demand for Bitcoin-backed loans grows.

Borrowing against your bitcoins is only beneficial for those that are hodling for long term. I don't see how this is ideal for those who have short term expectations of their bitcoins, they can actually use a different asset as collateral or simply exercise a little patience and withdraw their bitcoins for what they want to do.

I love the idea of still keeping ownership of your bitcoins while still attending to your financial needs. I will not hesitate to use my bitcoins as collateral if i ever need a loan to solve a problem; but on the condition that the terms of the loan will be fair and that I will not be subjected to any form of KYC just to get the loan approved.

That is precisely the plan openly shared by some members of this forum and also by several popularly known bitcoiners. A plan that requires almost blind confidence that Bitcoin will continue to appreciate in the future. For the average Joe, hodling is still the main "Plan BTC".

Linked to this topic, a few days ago I read the news that in the EU the Deutsche Bank will soon start providing cryptocurrency-related services, and many other banks will follow, so I wouldn't be surprised if we also see news like those from the OP here too soon.

In our society, banks hold so much power and, therefore, influence. When they say Bitcoin has value, it must have value. So, in a way, banks accepting Bitcoin is like a testimony that Bitcoin is already acceptable. While many of us don't really care, this may be a go-ahead signal to the rest.
I couldn't really care less about people who doubt that BTC has value, i mean, this is 2026 and not 2009. It should be obvious to anyone who can use a smart phone and can do the tiniest bit of research, that BTC has value and they'd not need a bank providing BTC-backed loans to reinforce that for them.
But when we can take a loan from the bank against Bitcoin collateral, this problem will be solved, which will further increase the interest and opportunities of Bitcoin holding.
This particular BTC-backed loan offer we're talking about in this topic is for corporate entities only.

Although that lending program only dedicated to their corporate client, but it sounds good to see more bank is starting to recognize bitcoin as a commodity. Other than that i believe you should not need to raise a concern regarding LTV because any coroprate who use bitcoin as collateral already known the consequence.

It will be so good if that bank is also starting to accept bitcoin as collateral for their personal client as well.

For me, the real question is whether Bitcoin-backed lending can grow sustainably without encouraging excessive leverage.

It's growing steadily and still happening now.

Do you think this is a good step for Bitcoin adoption, or could it create bigger problems during the next major market downturn?

Having a bank adopt bitcoin as their collateral is good. It means they're starting to admit bitcoin a valuable asset. Imagine when people stored bitcoin instead of using real estate, it's much more simple, but only a bit volatile.

However, i'm wondering how bank will solve the volatility that can affect borrower's LTV. It sound hilarious if they contact their borrower to supply more btc when the price is moving down.  Cheesy

Bitcoin adoption isn't just about buying and holding anymore. Some financial institutions are exploring ways to let businesses borrow against their BTC instead of selling it.

South Korea's Jeonbuk Bank reportedly launched a Bitcoin-backed corporate lending program on October 12, allowing eligible businesses to use BTC as collateral for loans in Korean won.

MARA Holdings has also used its Bitcoin holdings to secure $600 million in financing, showing how BTC can serve as collateral beyond the crypto lending market.

Sources:

https://cryptorank.io/news/feed/a5bbd-south-koreas-jeonbuk-bank-launches-first-bitcoin-backed-corporate-loans

https://www.coindesk.com/markets/2026/08/11/bitcoin-backed-lending-is-entering-its-institutional-era-two-prime

I think this is a positive development because companies can access capital without immediately selling their BTC. It gives Bitcoin another practical use in finance beyond simply holding it as an investment.

However, borrowing against a volatile asset comes with risks. If BTC's price drops sharply, borrowers may need to add collateral or face liquidation. Interest costs also mean this strategy won't make sense for everyone.

For me, the real question is whether Bitcoin-backed lending can grow sustainably without encouraging excessive leverage.

Do you think this is a good step for Bitcoin adoption, or could it create bigger problems during the next major market downturn?
What kind of problems? Holders seem to have problems in every bear market, so i am not sure how this would mean additional problems.

But i think it's good for bitcoin holders who think institutional involvement is good for bitcoin. And it's pretty strong signal when banks are "banking" on it having value in the future as well, enough for even as a collateral. Risks exists and they have always existed, but i think we have overcame worst of them.
