"... thinking it would be a quick way to solve her financial problems."

Well, thinking is one thing, reality is something else. We all learn that, sooner or later... And when it comes to gambling, we always return to rule number one: Don't spend more than you can afford to lose! Once you cross that line, you start chasing losses and dig your hole deeper.

Online gambling exploded in all countries & continents. Easier access, crazy marketing tactics that promise big wins/prizes, and getting into something blindly without any research is just a call for disaster. Gambling is a vice... it's like playing with fire, and I can't blame the fire because it's hot! I think that individual responsibility has to come first! We can't complain much about getting burned if we choose to jump into the fire!

Your analogy is interesting. But casinos also have a role to play on this. Individuals are to be blamed for their individual actions. Also casinos too have a responsibility to play. Take trading for instance, there's always a message telling you it's very risky. That too should be what the casinos should do. Instead they paint a certain lifestyle around gambling. So my blame will not go only for the individuals but also to the casinos. They too have a role to play in all of this.

...there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.
This is what the government of South Africa wanted his citizens to be and they are doing well for him. He sponsored it citizens to chase out the foreigners who were doing businesses in South Africa and South Africa indigene were employed in those shops, companies and business outlets and now that those businesses have closed down, there is no source of income therefore gambling becomes the alternative for them.

South Africans will take gambling as a means of income since there is no other work for them to do again. The Zulu conflict of chasing the foreigners is the caused of the increase of the gambling addiction.

The people who are addicted are the ones complaining about gambling being regulated, which means they already know they are having gambling issues and will be easier to heal.

Since the people are complaining, the government should focus on regulating gambling ads while trying to regulate the casinos because the amount of way unhealthy ads popping up on social media space and other apps is alarming, and it can reach children which are not up to the age of gambling.

I don't think there's any reason for anyone to let themselves get addicted to gambling, there's no excuse for it but at the same time the government needs to step in to support otherwise in the next few years this is going to be a big problem for them. It is important that they intervene because the people are speaking up and they genuinely want to stop but they also need to put in personal efforts to control their gambling activities.

Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind.
My question is that does it mean that this is the first time south Africa is practicing online gambling? It sound like south africa is just  starting online gambling. What I know is that gambling has started a long time ago and people who chose to get addicted will get addicted. Gambling is a game luck and when playing, we must gamble responsibly. The reason many people get addicted is because they take gambling seriously or see it as means of survival. When they see it like that they keep gambling and hoping to succeed from it, and as a result of that they get addicted.

Anyone who’s been around gambling for a while would know that gambling is meant to be merely a fun activity that players should indulge with only pocket change that they can actually lose without feeling the impact. But the moment a person is struggling financially and then their hope is on the bet, that the next bet would change their financial situation or pay their bills, then it becomes easier for addiction to take over easily and the house is more than ready to take whatever little thing that’s left of them.

That does not change the fact that people are losing in trading just like how people are losing in gambling. I wish gambling sites can have those kind of message which I believe is not going to change people's mind until they learn that they can not make money from something that is not promising but risky like gambling and the way most people are trading.

I wonder why South Africans should be concerned or worried about online gambling addiction when they are doing so much to chase foreigners who are industrious out of their country because they think they have taken over their jobs. Most of the foreigners are out, why don't they do their business and make all the money? How can they still become addicted when the jobs are now available?

It's just that many are lazy right from time and thinking that online gambling is a way out of poverty is the wrong idea they have. The government should enforce strict regulations and taxes so they learn to work and earn a good living instead of relying on gambling to survive.

When people turn to gambling out of desperation, viewing it as a source of income and a shortcut solution then situation spirals completely out of control.

Unfortunately, this happens in most cases, the "occasional" players who play out of desperation and then turn this into a habit until it becomes a real addiction.
Regulating gambling reduces risk, but does not eliminate it entirely, so education about gambling use is also needed.
Because it is correct in my opinion that anyone can try, but they must have a criterion, a modality that unfortunately is missing in all countries of the World, even more so if it is not regulated.

The same situation is happening in my country, the Philippines. Due to the proliferation of online gambling and the government allowing it, many have become irresponsible, addicted gamblers. The advertisement is everywhere, and that includes on national TV. We all see that even popular vloggers and local celebrities are being sponsored by our local casinos and that is why it is visible almost in every platform that comes with social media too. They all tell to gamble responsibly but if that's what we see in our day living, there are a lot of us who can't control themselves and that's sad. I'd say the same thing because it also looks like a gambling addiction epidemic here, or it really is.

I don't know how people fail to grasp that gambling is just entertainment, it's not a job or source of income!

When mothers or girls from lower middle class family or individual struggling financially fall into this trap. Actually they end up facing even greater hardship and loss.

It's a serious problem I must say, and I really feel bad for her. Imagine the pain, getting to spend all your earnings on betting, and at the end, you lose everything. What is even more worse is that you know you would lose, according to her, you know you will not win, yet you keep gambling always and wishing you will win.

Gambling addiction is just too bad. Once you are in, it becomes difficult to get out, because it takes over your thoughts and give you this false hope and convinction that you will win. I think it's bets the government tries placing some ban on illicit gambling, maybe restricting the gambling companies some bit, which in turn will restrict customers some how, and maybe, it's drastic effects would reduce a bit.

Based on my research, Souther Africa has a public-private foundation called the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF) and a National Responsible Gambling Programme, through the office of the government and national gambling regulation, they sponsored free treatment and counselling, a confidential 24/7 helpline (toll-free) and free clinical treatment for all problem gambling patients in that country.

There are also news like the ones below;

National Gambling Board warns against gambling as a financial solution

South Africa forms task team to tackle youth problem gambling

Despite all that is being done by the government and gambling regulation, every individual is still bent on gambling because they want to make extra income, looks like the main cause of the problem in stinging poverty. But one thing rings in my head, you can take away poverty from a man but you can not take away his decision to continue gambling.

We have discussed several solutions to problem gambling here on the forum, and I made the point that an addicted gambler will never change unless they decide to change themselves. You can provide all the support, restrictions, and solutions available, but if the person isn't willing to take that first step, even the best interventions will not work on them. You can help someone find a way out of gambling addiction, but you cannot make that decision for the person.
Yes I believe that gambling addiction are more rampant on poorer countries since people are chasing quick money or easy money despite the fact that they are risking their own money. I came from a poor country and I believe that majority of the gamblers here lack financial literacy. There are many horror stories about gambling addiction and how they lost their money because they became addicted to gambling.

It is nice that they had a gambler addiction support like those foundations but yeah, it can't really get rid of the gambling problem they have. Coming to a foundation is voluntary and a chance that an addicted gambler seeks for help is small. They need a government intervention or a counter marketing like advertising the responsible gambling foundation or increasing the budget on those foundations.

Online gambling had been the problem of many countries and some countries had been strict to take down all of the casino and casino related contents like thailand. This shows the grit of the government, on how serious they are fighting the industry. There are countries that are willing to sacrifice the possible tax income they can get from those casino just to get rid or stop the potential addiction of it's citizen.

From this NEWS there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.

I humbly submit that this can be attributed to the cultural and environment of South Africans having less access to job opportunities and financial income.

If a certain country has less opportunities for their citizens to earn income, then they have the potential to resort to violence, gambling, and other related activities. Do I blame these people that they resorted to these activities? Somehow yes given that they always have the choice to do the right and better thing. However, blaming them solely when the government officials and politicians are corrupt should at least be considered on their part.

Quote
While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.

Regulation should always be proceeded and observed if a certain activity tends to bring adverse effects to its citizens. If the government fails to act upon these measures, then this can snowball quickly into a bigger problem which goes beyond gambling as a whole.

While are agree that unemployment is one of the major factors that leads to abuse of gambling. When people who are willing to work don't have access to employment opportunities, they tend to seek ways to survive, and gambling is one of such means.

However, I have been following up on the situation in South Africa regarding immigration. And one striking attribute of South Africans is that many of them are not willing to work. They prefer to depend on the government for welfare assistance. Immigrants are doing most of the jobs while they waste time in pubs and on gambling platforms.

The reason gambling is not for children is that gamblers should be mature enough to take full responsibility for their actions. South Africans would have to control their gambling habits, and those who are addicted should seek assistance. The government has the responsibility to protect citizens from exploitative or manipulative tendencies. Therefore, regulating the gambling industry is sacrosanct.

This situation of not paying attention to gambling regulations is becoming an entire Africa connection pandemic and from the negative experience we have recorded from problematic gambling disorders, we should call out various government to take action to provide more regulations for the gambling market to protect their consumers interest which is the gamblers and not for casinos to keep operating without even having any government licenses or regulatory compliance practices.

Maybe they are just beginning to get worried about the gambling condition of recent because several countries have go pass this stage already. And perhaps the government probably more attention to and maybe discussed in the senate house on how to go about it. however in my opinion the convenience of gambling from mobile devices and how easy it is to deposit through some fintech companies have facilitated the gambling habit in south Africa and many other companies hence maybe the remover of such feature in the fintech payment methods will probably reduce the effect of gambling.

From this NEWS there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.

Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind.

I think gambling should be fun, but when a mother from a poor or low middle class home want to take Bitcoin as a source of income it is easy to become addicted and be at a loss. What that should be fun, recreational is being abused with costly effects.

While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.
When people take gambling as a source of income and take gambling as a source of income and gamble, then whoever becomes addicted to gambling will not only be addicted but will be addicted in a way where his life can be destroyed. In fact, this woman was taking gambling as a source of income and gambling due to which she started losing constantly and it started to get scary because gambling is not perfect for earning money, gambling is just for entertainment. However, the government should take strict action in this regard and should keep a strict watch on gambling in her country.

Gambling addiction is not something which is planned in most cases Otis something which happens naturally as the gambler gets more involved without cautioning themselves. You cannot be a gambler without controlling your gambling habits and expect not to be addicted. For many reasons, your emotions will get tempered with and what usually comes as normal for you is addiction which you can’t avoid or control. Gamble responsibly, irresponsible gambling is what leads to addiction and addiction is what leads to depression, so the earlier someone follows the trend carefully, it is better.

Our government are more concerned about how much they can make from the casinos than about protecting us, who are the citizens, from gambling problems. It's even worse in my country (Nigeria), where underage gambling is on the rise and there is nothing being done about it. I have seen agent shops filled with secondary school students and the owners not doing anything about it to limit that.

…
From watching the YouTube shorts, it is obvious that the government know how to tackle the gambling pandemic and they have the agency to do that, but maybe they do not want to because there are some folks who may be benefiting out of it and strict regulation may cut off their source of revenue I mean for those folks. One thing is clear do that aside the regulation on gambling operators that is the increase in tax they should also be awareness, intervention, for those who are addicted to gambling. The video states a lot of things but what was missing was what the government should do for these people. Indecisive approach should be taken immediately.

South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.
Well, if they are complaining about being addicted, it's up to them to take the first step and start looking for mechanisms to stop this addiction. They have to take responsability for their actions and choices. The government can't take decision for those addicted citizens.

The world is ill because the tendency is that nothing is individual's fault, but someone else's. Fault of the government, the casino, gambling, the economical system, but never of the choices the individuals took through their free will.

By now, South Africans already have a practical example gambling doesn't work to solve their financial challenges, so there is no reason to continue gambling, as they can't afford losing money that way. To learn with their own mistakes is a good start.
