I agree that the government need to regulate gambling, but what would the government do to stop gambling addiction? Even countries that regulate gambling have a lot of gambling addicts. I think the only thin government can really do is create awareness about gambling addiction and how people can get addicted to and also how to avoid it. They can't stop people from gambling. Banning gambling completely will reduce it, but it won't stop it. There are certain things that people need to take responsibility for. It is the responsibility of every person to make sure they don't get addicted to gambling. There is only so much the government can do for you. Adults should be able to take accountability for their actions.

The government can stop gambling but it cannot control it completely, because there are some addicted gamblers who will gamble by any means, so it is not possible for the government to control them, if gamblers control their emotions by themselves, limit themselves to what they can afford, gamble for their time, and abandonment the mentality of getting back the money they lose and maintain self-control over themselves, then the horror of gambling will not affect their lives. Controlling emotions through gambling is possible only when the gambler gambles for entertainment with the money they can afford to lose and keeps their mind calm and can accept whatever the result is. As a result, the gambler can control themselves and gamble and protect themselves from gambling addiction.

Is this not true for any country out there which is having a growing middle class population looking to make good returns from quick bets and not have to go down the grind?

Specially in cities where alcohol and drug use are also high, there will be parallel gambling and other vices coming up too. It is because of the human mindset to get satisfied quickly and then expect another similar hit quickly as well.

Because the governments start making headlines we seem to notice that country, this country - but this is a universal problem, just that it does not get reported in every country.

Nobody is disputing the fact that theur is no gambling addiction in other countries but the case of south Africa has become something worse. Like in Nigeria even if unemployment is high,  Nigerians still have the ability to create income for themselves,  if government do not provide job they can still sort things gor themselves.  People gamble a lot in Nigeria but they do not rely on it as their only income. The worst thing is for people to depend in gambling because it will end up getting them addicted.

Because the governments start making headlines we seem to notice that country, this country - but this is a universal problem, just that it does not get reported in every country.
The response of each country regarding the growing issue of gambling addiction will definitely differ. But if there are communities or groups that have proposed stricter regulatory changes or improvements to the government, it means the situation may already be quite serious.
The government must respond seriously to make improvements that at least make the public feel reassured. The government cannot wash its hands of the rather serious threat posed by the gambling addiction epidemic.

You are wrong, when I saw your post, I decided to do some research about the countries that gambles the most and I discovered that it is even the developed and richer countries that do more of gambling than the under developed and poor countries.
I’m going to put out some link so you can see for yourself or you can also do more research by yourself.
This are the link to sites that’s proof what I’m saying.

Where Do People Gamble The Most? Top 10 Countries According To CasinoTopsOnline.com

Countries That Gamble The Most

Countries With the Highest Online Gambling Rates

No, I am not wrong. The reasons in richer countries they gamble more than in poor countries is because they have more money. Now search what happens within those rich countries and you will find this:

Why slot machines love poor postcodes

People in poor neighborhoods are twice as likely to have gambling problems, study finds

People from poor UK areas more likely to be high-risk online gamblers - study

Gambling is supposed to be for entertainment, sometime I wonder why people are so desperate that it turns into addiction without them realizing on time, countless time ,videos and news of how gambling addiction has killed and cause more damage in human has surface but people still don't want learn from others , gambling is not where one can get rich quick unless the universe want to surprise you, sometime it doesn't happen on time ,it takes long, but that doesn't mean it will be the same for every other person .

The issue now is that the government can stop gambling but cannot entirely banned it ,those addicted once will definitely look for a way out just so they can still gamble , I believe to put a stop to gambling starts from within ,if a person is willing to have self control and manage how they gamble , government cannot do it alone.

My research proves that the native South Africans are lazy. I'm not talking about immigrants and tourists. Now I understand better why Xenophobia is high in South Africa, and that explains better why gambling addiction is high over there than in any other African country.

The immigrants in South Africa own 90% of businesses over there. Investors are foreign investors and tourists who decide to invest in the country.

I do not live in this country, but I think that the financial situation of these people is difficult to call prosperous, and unemployment only pushes them to look for any sources of income. It is very difficult for me to condemn people who live in poverty and want to win at least a few bucks at the casino, since they probably have no other choice. It's always very easy for us to label people as stupid, but those who follow their path may look at their life situations differently. Yes, there are many who just waste their lives mindlessly, destroying themselves in gambling and acquiring gambling addiction, but I think there are many who are just trying to survive.

As south Africa, citizens are ranked among the highest numbers of gambling participations that means that it has become a problem in that country and their government is doing the right thing to interven because high participation in gambling would result to high rate of addiction. I hope that their interference will yield positive results to rehabilitate addicts and prevent more south Africans from becoming addicted to gambling. Addicted gamblers are in every countries where gambling is legalized but the rate of addiction differs, hopefully if the South African government is able to come up with strict gambling regulations hopefully it can cause a positive paradigm shift but addiction cannot be totally eliminated in every gambling countries.

I believe that some players may turn to gambling simply out of desperation, hoping to earn a bit of money. It is possible that casino owners are aware of this and take advantage of such a vulnerable situation. On the other hand, players shouldn’t just give up and claim that gambling is their only option that’s merely an excuse for their losses. It would be better to strive to generate an income through hard work or by making the most of the resources available and while I realize that is incredibly difficult, there is simply no other way, without the drive to improve one’s circumstances, nothing will ever change for the better.

It breaks my heart when I remember how some Africans suffer, not because they lack resources, but because some corrupt dictators would rather have an alliance with a foreigner than their own race. Stolen resources, inflation, taxes here and there, embezzlement of the highest order, all in one place, on one people..........Wherefor??

Conversely, the damage gambling can do could be worse, considering that a the poor ones would go all in, out of desperation, and when the survival instinct kicks in, daily limits could become a starting point and even the most disciplined of all could fumble, even sometimes, due to misrepresentation.

That being said, gambling for survival is something I'd never advice one to do.

Seems their government over there pay less attention to matters like this. Other countries have already pulled the weight. I see no reason why you would wait until your citizens are biting their fingers before you act. As of now, I don't think the government have even made any move at all.

Let's be honest with ourselves. There is so much regulations can do. And it can't eliminate behaviours like this. But it has proven to reduce the financial impact on families and how it affects the society.

It's best the government steps in and put in some of those regulations that will help the citizens.
How many governments in these African countries actually pay attention to important issues, let alone something like gambling? Many of them may not even bother because they don't see how it affects people. Honestly, gambling addiction often results from irresponsible gambling behaviour. The government can introduce as many regulations as it wants, but that will not necessarily stop an addict from gambling away their money. If someone truly wants to overcome their addiction, they must also be willing to take responsibility and work towards it. The government can play a role by regulating online gambling platforms and protecting players, but the main effort must also come from the individuals themselves.

If there's no control anymore, I think the government badly needs to step in. Probably, they need to shut down every online casino that is available in their region and try to regulate only a few so that they can monitor the players and how they gamble.
They just need to regulate online gambling and that doesn't necessarily mean that they have to close down every online casino because that might not really be the solution to it. In a lot of countries where online gambling is banned it ends up making it worse because people get introduced to online gambling or use of VPN to gain access to online casinos.

Quote
It will not be easy to do this because that means lesser taxes that will be received by the government but if it is for the own good of their people, then I think it is worth it. Well, unless they are corrupt and just want to keep on receiving money and do not really care about their people.
This is the reason why the government of some countries would not bother to solve such a problem in their country because they generate revenue from the casinos, regulating means the taxes will be reduced and they don't want that.

The governments role in protecting their citizens against all odds also includes addiction but these days they feel less concerned and more about their selfish interests than attending to crucial matters as it bothers their nationals. Situations as this are taken seriously by organisations before the government show's concerns because they have been called out by the organisations.
They do this because the revenue or tax they get from these gambling platforms are enormous  so they wouldn't want to get involved because if it results that they stop gambling in their country, their revenue would definitely drop so sometimes they avoid situations like this not until they've been called out.

Most African countries are suffering from this corruption interference with government delivery of promises of the right of their citizens, same country that have all this banned and regulated gambling market, you will still see their citizens winning on those casinos and their money will get seized and government intervention will be no were to be found , you than Begin to wonder if government is also a part of the plan to seize player's money unjustly because casino already aware that their get government staffs backing and nothing will happen, when in the right sense the law surposes to be the last hope of the gambler in this kind of case.

Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind.

Should a woman be called irresponsible gambler just by looking at her emotional reaction?

Do you know how much financial pressure she was under? We don't even know if her gambling got out of control. But yes, when people start looking at gambling as income source, risk increases a lot.

However, regulation is not just about stopping underage gambling. In my opinion, it is now important for every casino to have spending limit, self exclusion, loss chasing detection and effective intervention for vulnerable player.

But I won't put all the blame on casino either. We have to understand ourself, gambling with money for rent or family expenses and recreational betting with disposable income are not same thing.

I liked the term “cyber gambling epidemic” in South Africa, which is indeed a very serious epidemic because if it spreads in society, it becomes similar to a disease epidemic that causes great corruption in society.

I believe that the environment conducive to the spread of the gambling epidemic is the poor environment, where people dream of improving their situation through gambling, but unfortunately the opposite happens, and instead of their situation improving, it gets worse, and corrupt governments do nothing.

It usually happens exactly like that. It is the poorest sections of society who gamble the most. It is a well-known phenomenon, and no one knows this better than the bookmakers.

I don't think I'm wrong because the statistics in the link you provided are based on total revenues and profits, which is the general measure, and the second factor that these statistics depend on is the average loss per person, which is the reason why countries with huge populations like the United States and Japan are at the top of the list, as these markets achieve billions of dollars in total annual returns.

In short, rich countries lead in spending and financial losses, but gambling addiction as a behavioral disease is more prevalent in poor countries than in rich countries, although addiction is equally widespread in both.

I've read in this article that South Africa's total gambling turnover last year was around 1.5 trillion, a large portion of which came from online gambling.
That was a crazy number. Much larger than some 3rd world countries out there. I thought that country was poor? Damn. Oh well, when it comes to gambling, the ability of the people to produce money are always coming out no matter how hard/poor their current environment or situations are. And BTW this is only online gambling. I heard that physical betting shops are also hot on those places.

Problem is that more than 65% of adult participate in gambling but approximately 31% of those who gamble are problem gambler.

People from these poor and lower middle class family might be viewing gambling as source of income. That is why risk of addiction and ruin has increased so significantly for them. They become dependent on gambling to earn money and as a result they do not engage in any work.
But that is still fine to hear than if we find out that 65% of it are minors. And then only half of it are problem gamblers. Compared to others that I think the percent of problem gamblers are close to 70 percent.

Middle class families were like wiser and have main sources than the poor ones. They don't engage in work because there is no work at the first place. Some says their government is corrupt and can't provide better opportunities on their people. This is another reason for some to rely in gambling. But that is still wrong. Gambling is not the solution for all types of problems.

From this NEWS there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them.

Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind.
The South African government needs to come in and help her people and if something urgent is not done to help those that have become addicted to gambling, they will gradually develop emotional problem that can lead to serious mental issues.
I think gambling is one of the most serious and complicated addiction that can be very hard to over come.
One thing that makes gambling addiction very complicated is the financial aspect of it and if those that are addicted can not work on themselves, this will become a serious issue that will be complex to handle.

Afaik problem of online gambling in South Africa is even greater than how you have described it.

And I have objection regarding the woman in this video. I think it is unfair to simply label her as irresponsible. You know, addiction is not any character flaw, it is a psychophysical condition.

It seems to me gambling companies in their country deliberately exploit people's emotion and vulnerabilities. So, instead of worrying too much about why she lost control. We should talk about what drew her to this product. They should first fix that flashy marketing channel in their country.
