The synchronization does not have any problem, but

V1.6.5.4 It is finished forcibly every several hours.
[Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library]
Runtime Error!
This application has requested the Rumtime to terminate it in unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.
 Undecided
Windows10 64bit
New update was released again. Try updating to V.1.6.5.5 (Help > Check for update)

What you should do:

Upgrade to wallet version 1.6.5.5 (Help > Check for update)
Bootstrap (File > Reload Blockchain) your wallet and ensure it's synchronized to the same block number as the public block explorer (https://chainz.cryptoid.info/vrc/).

If you are having issues with synchronization, navigate to the following folder:

Windows: %AppData%\VeriCoin
Mac: /Library/Application Support/VeriCoin
Linux: ~/.vericoin

and remove the folder txleveldb as well as the files peers.dat and blk0001.dat. Download and place the file vericoin.conf in the same directory (http://www.vericoin.info/downloads/vericoin.conf).

You may need to rescan your wallet using the file menu option as well, after syncing.

1.6.5.5 fixes the issues in 1.6.5.2-1.6.5.4. A recent bootstrap is available and a new conf with known good nodes is live at http://www.vericoin.info/downloads/vericoin.conf.

Please update your wallet and if you are not synchronized to the same block as the explorer, please reload blockchain: https://chainz.cryptoid.info/vrc/

I wrote up a long description of what happened and what we've done to fix it here: https://www.vericoinforums.com/threads/details-on-the-1-6-5-2-blockchain-issues.1463/

Additionally, I have created and tested a burn address with an unknown private key which we can use to dispose of high-interest stakes if that's what the community decides: https://chainz.cryptoid.info/vrc/address.dws?VRCBURNCNhMBcyVBiYB4znn61PfYy7gVCb.htm

Please vote on the fate of the large-stake coins: https://www.vericoinforums.com/threads/fate-of-the-1-6-5-2-large-stake.1464/
Quoting this for visibility

If you have strong feelings about this big stake amount please register and vote (5 post requirement for voting).  Burning is winning by significant margin.  https://www.vericoinforums.com/threads/fate-of-the-1-6-5-2-large-stake.1464/

whats the point of the vericoinforums if members are never granted "permission" to do anything?
useless they are it seems.

 Huh

gave up on that.

almost a year has gone by & still waiting to be granted "sufficient" enough "privileges" to be able to do anything.

lol motives?  Why would me or anyone have motive to troll/FUD this coin?  It's already established coin around long time (this is good!) as I used to trade it...too bad it has disintegrated into nothingness.  Had verihandgroups pumping it during first hype of it long ago, since dead.  Try to re-ignite it with this new vrm crap which will again prove to either A. not work and do nothing for it or B. work for a month so it can pump and dump again.  I only saying truth to most coins that are BS.  The end.  Nothing will happen for veri so stop dreaming, unless you can whip the dev's ass and hope for whales on your coin again.

EVERYTHING about startcoin is just talk - this is piece of shit coin, it's all about Keiser's talk, when he says something about sc on social media ppl goes nut and price rises, when he's quiet for some time price goes down.

Why would you think that? Did you do some research?

To answers your question: No it's not dead.
