In an attempt to expand my horizons, I've installed Ubuntu on a partition of my laptop...
Are you using a graphical desktop on Ubuntu? If so, just right click in the .bitcoin folder & choose "New File" or whatever. There'll be a text editor nearby too (I'm not near a "proper" computer at the moment, so going from memory).

In the "Administration" menu, there's a graphical installer thing, probably called something like "Add software" - used to be "Synaptic package manager", but that changed recently.

If you're not using a graphical desktop, I recommend "nano" as a text editor - much less arcane than vi (ok, & less powerful etc, but we're only making a simple conf file here..).

I use apt-get, always have. I haven't found a compelling reason not to, haven't looked for one though...

The graphical installer is called "Ubuntu Software Center"...

I upgrade the guide to make use of "nano" editor, instead of "vi".

I use aptitude, because it is the apt-get evolution... If you don't have it, install it by typing:

sudo apt-get install aptitude

Best!

I just read a comment in another thread claiming one could point p2pool at a merged-mining pool.

Would it work?

I would like to get work from mmpool at bitparking, that merges several chains, and also merge on my end locally a bunch more chains that mmpool has not chosen to support.

Is that at all likely to be possible?

Would it generally work on most pools? Or would a pool have to be specially modified to make sure it allows its miners to add in the hashes/merkles for more chains than just those the pool itself already merges?

Following Forrestv recommendations, I update the guide to make use of Bitcoin 0.6.0 rc2.

So, enjoy the future of Bitcoin mining!! Come to P2Pool!

Doest this setup let you merge mine all the chains listed above?  Also if you find a bitcoin block do you keep it or is it shared with everyone that is on P2P?  I guess my question is this like solo mining?

The bitcoin blocks found are distributed to all the workers in the p2pool. Merged mining is possible. It is like solo mining, in that blocks can be found on your own bitcoind, but they are distributed to all the p2pool miners.

1- Yes;

2- No, yes, it is shared...

3- Yes, mining at P2Pool is like solo mining (as like you have 300GHash) with shared rewards...

Yes, you can mine all at the same time.

Here at my P2Pool node, I have running Bitcoin, Namecoin, IXCoin, I0Coin, Devcoin with merged mining, at the same time.

And, for Litecoins, I have a second P2Pool instance... But not merged...

Best,
Thiago
