Favorite political figure?

Hello everyone! Just thought we could share political figures which inspire us with each other.
You can choose from either past or present! No matter from which country.

I'll start!

Mine would be Alexander the Great!

Born to King Philip II in 356 BC, he had everything. He was a prince to a mighty kingdom, yet unlike many spoiled rich brats who end up squandering their parent's empire like many we see today, he had an intense dislike of his father, and he transformed that dislike into an overwhelming desire and pit-less ambition to achieve more than him.

When his father launched a military campaign and conquered almost all of Greece, he famously complained "My father will go on conquering until there is nothing extraordinary left for me to do."

When he was 20, his father was murdered by a courtier. The cities which was under his father's rule rise up in rebellion, dreaming of freedom. However, even though he was advised by advisers to proceed cautiously, in a show of strength, he marched to the furthest reaches of his kingdom crushing every rebellion along the way.

This is a man who would end up conquering most of Asia and created one of the largest empires of the ancient world, a task he undertook when he was crowned as king when merely 20 years of age.

There is much we can learn from Alexander.

It is in fact the only story I remember about Alexandr the Great. Before he died, he ask people to let his hands out of the coffin. What he meant was: I left with my bared hands. (correct me if I am wrong)
Just wonder why he killed so many people while always being aware that some day he would leave with the bared hands.

My favorite leader is Abraham Lincoln .. He was simply a genius.. Had he be ruling the country now, the world would have been an all together a different place surely..

He killed so many people, because he was a conqueror and that's what conquerors do! His contributions to what is considered the Hellenistic culture, notwithstanding, and his military strategies and successful imperialistic campaign...but, can you truly consider him an inspiration? Maybe, if he had lived longer a true evaluation could be reached regarding how he chose to rule his empire. He's an interesting historical figure.

Some of his achievements resulted in the deaths of more than 60 million people (almost all of them civilians). And don't forget the invasion of Tibet and the mass atrocities committed there, under his command.

Here is my favorite. I don't agree with him on policies such as international immigration, but definitely he is one of the best politicians right now.

The picture is epic!I could say "Putin is stronger than a bear"!But your right ,he is one of the politicians that is not puppet from behind by others.

There are umpteen number of leaders in the history who hold a special place for themselves...However, there is one figure who is on the favorite list of scores of individuals across the globe and he is Great Mahatma Gandhi.. Modestly always dressed in simple khadi attires, he had lead India to gain freedom from the British rule.. As far as I remember, he had studied law, but then left in between to devote himself to his mother country.. Salute to such a man!

However, this could be the boost that Secretary of State John Kerry needed to revive this peace process, which has been largely dormant for the past four years. As you can see Pope is better at politics than US government.

Pope Francis is more of a religious leader than a political figure. I agree that he is the head of state in Vatican / Holy Sea, but not many people will classify him as a political figure.

With the technology of today he could kill a lot more than a few hundred thousand Americans in the name of "Unifying the country" aka, squashing individual and state rights.

Abraham Lincoln was a pure politician, and with today's media his ability to flip-flop on issues, depending on which region of the country he was in, would be non-existent. Abraham Lincoln told the audience exactly what they wanted to hear, and definitively stated that if he could end the war without freeing a single slave he would. His goal was to keep the Union together, not to end slavery. However, he was instrumental in the passage of the 13th Amendment, outlawing slavery; Sadly, his assassination prevented a successful "Reconstruction" of the United States. Although, I'm not sure had he lived, things would be any different. The Radical Republicans of that era were able to capitalize on the tragedy to ensure passage of significant legislation, the 14th and 15th Amendments!!

But, with the way Citizens United has perverted the 14th amendment it would be interesting to see what old Abe thinks of Corporations being considered people and political contributions protected as free speech!!

I would like to mention Che Guevara as well - big man and big political person - for those who don't know who he is , I can only say that Cuban Revolution would never happened without him ,

What a guy!

Yeah... definitely. The war against Iraq alone cost the American tax payers some $2 trillion (and still counting). One of the worst presidents the United States ever had in its history.

Mine would be Napoleon Bonaparte! He was a great French emperor who was loved by a lot of his subjects. When he was exiled by his political foes, he chose to escape captivity and marched a small army to Paris itself! And when he was confronted by the enemy (his former) army, he said "If there is one of you who would kill his Emperor, here I am." They instead surrendered to him and joined him to claim France back into his rule. Too bad he was not an economist. He barely ruled for 100 days after his return from exile.
