What does 'deprecated' mean, as used in the following wording taken from https://www.nem.io/install.html:

NCC/NIS Installer (Deprecated)

And why are the Nanowallet and NCC/NIS Standalone considered to better alternatives to the original NCC/NIS Installer?

NanoWallet is developed with a newer and better technology. NCC is therefore considered to be the 'old' wallet. Deprecated indicates that at some point it will be replaced.

There were some difficulties with the zip file i remember. I'm not sure why the installer is not recommended as alternative.

presumably if I download and install either the Nanowallet or the NCC/NIS Standalone, they'll automatically find  the relevant pre-exising Nem files on my hard drive? i.e. so that when I open the wallet I'll see my existing account and balance?

Only because it's zero fee. The Chinese refugees will be heading there so they'll mainly be foreign. Still, hopefully it'll inspire some Japanese folks. The government there seems to be moving more positively towards crypto than the actual population.
