NEM is New Economy Movement and XEM is the name of its crypto currency unit.

There was a discussion whether the currency unit is also called "NEM" (as so many cryptos have similar unit as the crypto name)
or something which starts with "X", because many international currencies and market items start with "X".  
The "X" won, and then was discussed if it will be "XNM", "XEM" or some other. "XEM" [ksem] won

What makes NEM different from all the other NXT clones (like NEX) aside from the 4X more coins? Also, what is the timeframe for this project?

I think NXT can be overtaken by a clone because the NXT stakeholders have too much power and I think their greed could destroy the coin. So, I definitely support this NXT clone movement. The real question is which clone will be the best?

I'd rather take some of NXTs ideas and create a new coin from scratch because the NXT code is spaghetti. (And if we can get away from Java, the better Smiley).

My 2 cents.

And with recent Catapult release the NEM team has fulfilled ever bit of the promise in Jaguar's final sentence.

Look on the bright side. You still have the opportunity to buy NEM at highly undervalued prices. I'm looking to pick up some more this week.

Dude, EVERYTHING is heavily manipulated in the crypto world. It's the wild west.
I share your feelings tho, it's frustrating to watch all these other coins rocket upward and nem languishes and stays stagnant.
Those other coins have tons of hype and volume, which nem does not have due to the no mining aspect. So we have a coin that just sits around doing nothing really. The only movement is speculation and not much else. I think this coin can be huge, all it will take is one big announcement, like a major corporate partnership or something else.  However until that happens, this coin really serves no propose, much like every other crypto out there except Bitcoin.
We hope it will have real world use and practicality, but so far most everyone is stuck in neutral while trying to become the next bitcoin.

Frustrating  

You have to bare in mind that NEM has been through cycles like this before. Particularly in it's infancy.

I'm an original stakeholder. I've watched it all unfold. The crypto sphere is very much like stocks -- each coin basically representing a share in the company (ie, devs).

Most coins lack drive, fundamentals or even a solid, bug free wallet. Even those coins like Ethereum are riddled with holes, bugs, and required rollbacks or had forks, yet through bot trading and wealthy investors, it remains in a continual state of pump.

I often think long and hard about the state of the market, and within a few hours you can see at least 3 or 4 coins go through a pump or dump phase, where'as nem remains untouched.

Like stocks, you want the shares of that new company that has the fundamentals to see their goals through. And as long as NEM remains at a reasonably cheap price, it's always an opportunity to accumulate.

I do sometimes wonder, perhaps the whales are very much aware of this, and by keeping NEM out of the regular pump and dump cycles, the whales spend most of their time quietly accumulating.

Sooner or later, there will be a market cleanse, and the dump that is coming will wipe out a good chunk of the rubbish we see on the markets today. When the dust settles, only those coins with a solid drive will walk out that cloud.

Do not be enticed to try and participate and profit off of the whales games, cos i guarantee if enough NEM holders do sell their coins, you'll see the whales jump on board nem and leave you in the dust.

It's all one big game of musical chairs, don't participate though, remain seated, else you may lose your seat altogether. It appears as though the next big "pump" is now primed at NEO --- China, again, pulling their bullshit. Just as the Chinese Miners did with BCH. They're purpose is to profit in BTC/FIAT, nothing more, nothing less.

XEM quoting in the last weeks or even months is disapointing, but we must take into account how strong was pump from zero levels to hero levels:) Correction is good, chart for now looks good - for corrective moves. If it will be cheaper, than ok, every holder or enthusiast should have some founds to collects cheaper XEM, and dont cry about market fluctuations.

By the way. I will try now to the same buying strategy @Deep Onion, as i see potential in this coin, to emulate the style of growth made by XEM in years 2015/2016. Of course technology behind Deep Onion is not so promising as NEM blockchain, but i like to seek coins, that can emulate growths made previous by big players (in terms of marketcap).

The same strategy i have applied in my longterm investing in XEM, and was for me very profitable. Of course there is one condition of success - coin must be actively developed and marketed (just like XEM was in the past).

so I act simply - I buy HEM at the first opportunity. This is a long-term investment and I do not even look at the cost, because in the long run 5-7% of the difference in price is leveled.
