When bitmain started sell price were detirmined by auctions. There were I think 3 auctions where prices went around 4.5 btc. After bitmain sold s1 trough sushi groupbuy with price 4.25 btc.
Just a note, btc usd exchange were at that time at 1100$ but its kind of nobody fault.

Edit

This is a prime example why pre orders suck. No one has a crystal ball, I prefer to live in the now not the future.

yeah it was why I did not buy a sp30 or an sp10   also large btc amounts create flags for tax purposes.

I will get a few of these.

I did a long cost analysis  on another thread.

the s-3 is better then the rk-box  at a 100 usd price difference .

but  if the rk-box is 200 less in price it is better then the s-3.

All based on a 4.5th setup   math is easier

at a 200 dollar price difference per unit:

and 20 cents a kwatt it takes 208 days to make up the power savings.  6.24 usd difference in power in a 4.5th setup

at  a 200 dollar price difference  per unit:

and 15 cents a kwatt it take  277 days to make up the power savings.   4.68  usd differnece in power in a 4.5th setup

at a 200 dollars price difference per unit :

and 10 cents a kwatt  it takes 416 days to make up the power savings.  3.12  usd difference in power in a 4.5th setup

So  the s-3 needs to be about 0-50   usd more the the rk-box to truly kill it.

If it is around 50 -100 more  it is better

If it is 100 to 200 more  the rk-box is not dead.

Philip, don't forget about the Pi each Rk-box needs and the larger power supplies you'll need for the Rk-boxes.

Pretty sure the S3's will be integrated controller boards with ethernet like the S1s.

And don't forget the S3's overclockability!!!   Grin

This makes me very happy, but why 4 PCI-E ports for such low power consumption?

Good planning on BITMAIN's part.  If you want to see a poor planning example, go over to the KNC thread where they have one (1) 6-pin PCI-E plug for a 35A @ 12V load.

This is incorrect.  The auction linked by alfabitcoin was the second auction.  The first (Nov 24) is at:
