I really have a tough time wrapping my head around an upgrade kit for the S1. What parts of the S1 could be kept and used? It seems both hashing boards would be gone and the only thing left is the control board, one fan, and a couple frame pieces. What is the value of these remaining parts? IMO it's better just to dump the entire S1 on eBay than try to upgrade. I can't imagine the typical miner (household or commercial) attempting to solder new chips to the old boards.

And of course it depends of the prize. maybe its 400$ and i dont buy it xD

You would also be able to re-use the heatsinks from each blade. Theoretically it would let the end user (or just Bitmain) to save on shipping because the boards by themselves are much lighter than a full miner, and you would be able to fit blades in the same size package. That being said, if you were to buy an upgrade kit, you would then need to do something with your old S1 boards, and I'm not sure if there would be a secondary market for them. Maybe people with dead S1 boards that want to keep using them?

We could replicate?
Like replicate the S1 miners? Quite possible if you can get the boards cheap enough and source the rest of the components, then sell for used market rates. Although that may be more effort than it's worth. It also could be fun to buy up a bunch of boards and see if you can make your own S2 style miner with old S1 blades and a rewired controller.

Or we could combine the S3 with S1 blades. Since the S3 is similar to S1, I think if we open the cover and make the frame bigger, we could connect both blades together, and of course, better psu.

I'm pretty sure that an upgrade kit for the S1 will consist of 2 new blades with new chips. I'm guessing 2 new chip boards for S1 upgrade will cost about 30% of a new S3. Upgrade kit --- .5 btc, new S3 --- 1.5btc. Maybe we will find out tomorrow.

As we see with other companies, I would not be surprised if the first batch or two is over priced. S3, upgrades.....all the new items, whatever else they are?. As a business they would be foolish not to test the upper end of the price range in the first batch of a new product. They have plenty of time to adjust pricing and out of all the mining companies Bitmain adjusts their pricing more than anyone. I have tempered expectations.

has to be 1BTC or less. absolutely NO point of paying 1.5BTC, unless you want to throw away $300. You would be much better off just buying 1.5BTC

I think we're on to something. Hopefully Bitmain won't steal this idea!

It seems there is this psychological barrier of 1 BTC though. They might try and cut right above it to test the waters for the first few weeks. My thought though is this price: 1.1 BTC Offer .12 BTC off for returning customers. I think that would be the smartest way for them to play this. A BIG shocker would be something like .75 BTC

Why not Upgrade Kit = 0.4 BTC ....S3 new = 1.2 BTC ... still TOO HIGH IMHO...RX-box is 1.05 BTC...

After all these pages of speculation, I'm guessing a lot more thought has gone into the S3 pricing on this thread than there is at Bitmain Corp. HQ. These guys probably took 30 seconds to come with a price 2 weeks ago and that's what they will go with.

Nothing as of yet, but something could be in the works with dogie? I haven't contacted him at all though. I'm pretty sure that an upgrade kit for the S1 will consist of 2 new blades with new chips. has to be 1BTC or less. absolutely NO point of paying 1.5BTC, unless you want to throw away $300. You would be much better off just buying 1.5BTC Everything that we're (you're) doing is exactly what Bitmain is doing as we speak. They have to find the magic right number to make the miner make sense on paper. Using the logic of nobody would buy a miner if they would make more buy holding doesn't always execute that way. Some most people go for profit but there are still some of us willing to buy a unit just to be involved and to tinker. And Bitmain knows this, that is why they will price it just above a break-even maybe so it still makes sense for a buyer. I do agree with how they will test the waters for maximum profit though and adjust accordingly. It does not have to be this way. If they have a large production capacity and their cost per miner is $100+$80-100 average mail=$180-200, then they can give themselves a nice 100% margin and still be at $360-400. What's wrong with this approach. Fine, 125% margin and be at $500 (0.85 BTC). Besides, $500 will swipe away many competitors and gain tremendous market share (possibly to 40-50%) Instead, always this "nickel and dime"ing with mining manufacturers.
