Hi,
I saw the last post of satoshi in 12.12.2010
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2228.msg29479#msg29479

Strange date for last posting.
Is he gone from this forum, or he is acting with another name? Why is he hiding at all?
The date of the last posting of him is also strange 12 12 2010 ( triple 12)
This can be related somehow to BTC..Huh
Any suggestions of oldschool members who actually talked with him ?
Thanks!

The Bitcoin software, network, and concept is called "Bitcoin" with a capitalized "B". Bitcoin currency units are called "bitcoins" with a lowercase "b" -- this is often abbreviated BTC.

I believe his last words to Gavin were something along the lines of "I've moved on to other things". I guess we'll probably never know why or what though.

He realized the Bitcoin project could sustain without his constant involvement, so he handed it over to other developers and 'moved on to other things' - probably developing a better virtual currency? ( read "Bytecoin"  Tongue )

Perhaps he'd like you to respect his privacy. Perhaps he'd like you to focus on his creation, his IDEA rather than having a horde of nerds and losers obsess over him in some twisted and exaggerated personality cult.

Perhaps Satoshi is critical of modern civilization's repugnant worship of celebrities as gods, and doesn't want any part of that sickness. Perhaps he just wants you to fuck off, leave him be, choose to be involved in Bitcoin or don't.

The most common assumption is Satoshi left because he doesn't want the attention and most likely had fears of government action since they have a history of going after developers of other tech related things that were then used for illegal purposes (various poker software creators have had legal action taken on them for websites using their software to cater to americans for example).

I think its no coincidence that he left right around the same time the CIA started asking questions and scheduling meetings to talk to bitcoin developers.

I also think he had the foresight to see some of the blowback bitcoin has gotten and didn't people to be able to character assinate bitcoin by attaching a single person to it.

If i was him, and BTC was on such up trend, like it was and still is, i'd disapear too. I cant imagine pressure that so much BTC in your wallet can create, let alone community and everything else that would drag his quality of life down. More he posted larger chance for him to be discovered. Once that would happen, his life would be over (not killed...just raped by media etc.). Screw that...i'd dissapear too.

Because he is a genius.

People are dumb, panicky animals and he knew it. The media relies on attacking people. Without a person to attack, all we are left with is the tech. You can't force math into obedience and you can't frighten people with the possibility that the bad bad computer might run off with their money.

I think that AGD is referring to the "recent" comment in the P2P Foundation forum by the same user - Satoshi Nakamoto - that in February 2009 started a discussion about his idea of a P2P currency:

Satoshi was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease. He knew he would no longer be able to maintain the fake online identity without help from others. So he abandoned it and created a real identity. This real identity registered here 2 weeks before Satoshi's last post and the person later came forward as being the first person to receive a bitcoin that was not mined. This happened the first week of bitcoins existence. Before bitcoin, Satoshi created a proof-of-work called RPOW which is arguably the precursor to bitcoins POW. Satoshi's real identity also admitted being involved with BTC in the beginning and the conveniently walked away from BTC only to return at the very same time Satoshi disappears.

Nobody just walks away from something like this. Satoshi literally didn't and can't. He is still here, reading not posting.

I don't think he left, i think he was arrested, as he probably worked for the USA government and Bitcoin is an idea he has unleashed to destroy the dollar and all fiat.

Worst case, USA probably has his private keys and will destroy Bitcoin whenever it wants to by releasing continuous stream of coins onto the markets for months on end.

If he was not arrested by the CIA he completely disappeared because he probably would be arrested and he had unleashed his idea on the world and knew it would grow like a virus and never be stopped.

second worst case, satoshi waits for bitcoin to be worth a million a coin and shows up on the world stage with his private keys in tow. His financial power puts him in position to rule the world as its dictator for the next 50 years.

Those who hold and those who are without property have ever formed distinct interests in society

Possibly.

Gavin said he was in email contact with Satoshi until ~ April 2011.

Satoshi also posted to his p2p profile when the Dorian stuff went down earlier this year.

Worst case, USA probably has his private keys and will destroy Bitcoin whenever it wants to by releasing continuous stream of coins onto the markets for months on end.
We call that cheap coins. And that's your worst scenario? Cool.

Bitcoin itself would survive such a scenario, but the damage to the ecosystem would be devastating, the entire mining community would be forced elsewhere... would be interesting to watch.

man, I am just amused by all the comments, who knows maybe they did it for a good giggle. Somewhere
out there, Satoshi is giggling reading all their posts, just so much wild speculation is possible.

But why Satoshi left? Dude, they made this thing unstoppable, how do you guarantee something to be unstoppable? It has to survive after you are gone. Look at the protocol, the design, the people, the community... They did all this from the beginning... it was well planned; This thing is unstoppable. The only thing that can kill it, is destroying all the digital infrastructure on the planet. And, even then if you create a strong community around it actively dissecting the code, the idea, re-iterating it a thousand fold; It will not die.

This thing is decentralized at every level, Blossoming into a thousand currencies, schemes, businesses, co-operatives, spreading and re-organizing itself, integrating itself into the current legacy system. This things is insane, the code, the protocol, adapting and evolving because it pays people to have an active interest in it's well being. We are taking care communally of the fastest growing network on the planet.

It is an example of what can be done when you begin to think of reality as a big processing engine, every human, computer, program, network, system is simply a node processing information that is visible for it to modify and reflect upon. A Hybrid Artificial Intelligence Network/ Decentralized Autonomous Organization observing itself from every perspective and point of view.

If you think my efforts are worth something; I'll keep on keeping on.

Satoshi is working on more complex ideas:

"There's more work to do on DoS, but I'm doing a quick build of what I have so far in case it's needed, before venturing into more complex ideas.  The build for this is version 0.3.19."

A lot of people who already went in on Bitcoin don't understand that what's BAD for them (flood of coins for sale pushing BTC price down) is GOOD for others who haven't yet bought in (cheap coins for sale).

Far too many capitalists are like infants, they are only capable of considering themselves...

I think more than anything Satoshi just got a bit burned out. He must have spent several years (at least) developing the ideas that led to the creation of the bitcoin whitepaper and then invested a great deal of effort and thought into starting the blockchain and working with the early community to make it survive and flourish. Eventually a person just gets tired.

That alone wouldn't cause him to completely drop out. But if this fatigue coincided with a period of rising fame (even on a minor scale compared to how it would be today) that a very private person like Satoshi would not appreciate, and an increasing flood of public and private communications... I know how I would react to that. There's a point where I (as an introvert) would just need to switch off. And I'm 99% sure that Satoshi was an introvert. It was ideas that made him tick, and people were a drain on his battery. Even positive interactions have this effect - it leaves us drained and seeking privacy. Hard for extroverts to understand.

So Satoshi saw Bitcoin taking off and reaching a point where it could grow without him. And bitcoin as an idea that he enjoyed was being replaced by the social aspects of fame and questions and criticisms and accolades - all of which were a negative to him. The risk that he would be unmasked, that there would be increasingly strong efforts to identify him - would have driven him to a point of no return.

With his personality I'm sure he's working on something now (and given his penchant for security, I'm inclined to believe the Foundation entry declaring he was not Dorian was genuine), but it may have nothing to do with crypto. He may have chosen a less stressful line of intellectual inquiry, like doing personal genealogy research or something.

I have trouble with the idea that he traded identities and got back into crypto. If he did it would be hard to keep his focused, keen intelligence and crypto experience masked. His desire to perfect whatever aspects of crypto he got involved with, and lack of patience with others struggling through issues he'd already decided or solved, would tend to create a track record of forceful arguments and epistles from this new identity showing a person with a masterful understanding of crypto. (I'm not saying he'd sound egotistical, but clear and forceful and firm.) How many candidates would there be with that kind of record, who are totally anonymous like Satoshi was, and whose prose is as crisp as Satoshi's? I'm guessing the list would be very small.

No. There will always be miners, by design, no matter what the price does. And the "ecosystem" involves big holders dumping when they feel like it. Non-problem.

And what prevents miners from choosing another coin???.... nothing, and what are the barriers to another coin taking over because it is now more valuable?Huh.... zero barriers, it is software, and there are a hundred coins with the same protocol.

No coin is even close to be more valuable : the second one Litecoin is only 2.5% of Bitcoin's valuation

I can imagine a coin created by a bank in Singapore or Hong Kong and backed by Gold that succeeds to get a lion share of the market but it would not mean that Bitcoin goes down to zero; by then Bitcoin will probably be valued a few tens of thousands of dollars or more

My point is that if someone gets Satoshi's million coins then they could destroy Bitcoin valuation themselves and keep the valuation low for a long period of time as they released the coins on the market. If this were to happen, it clearly opens the door for other coins. Yes no other coin is close, but that is because Bitcoin is so valuable, you change that price and people are being foolish if they don't think another coin could take its place.

The problem with the thesis that driving down BTC's value would enable another to take its place is that all other crypto is basically tied to BTC pricing and 99% of the trades for altcoins are done via BTC. So driving down the price of BTC would just drive down the price of all other alts to almost the same degree.

I don't think it would work at any rate. There are enough people who would start buying up the million BTC as the price dropped that I expect, after the dust settled, that BTC would still be well above $100 and probably several times that. Only if the sell-off coincided with some seriously bad news of Mt. Gox magnitude would the buyers stay away.

Satoshi is part of the design of Bitcoin. It is probably a pseudonym for a decentralised group of people. That way, they remain anonymous. Even the anonymity of the creator could look like a bad thing, it has more advantages than drawbacks. That way, nobody can attack the "head of the project" to discredit it. Look what happened with wikileaks. They attacked Assange to mess with everything.

So, Bitcoin is descentralised and under pseudonym to protect it and its creator too.

Any suggestions of oldschool members who actually talked with him ?
Thanks!

I would argue that the value of most/all alt coins are based at least somewhat on the value of bitcoin. So if someone were to drive down the value of bitcoin, either by selling Satoshi's coins or otherwise the value of other coins would drop as well.

IMO the real reason that Satoshi left was because Bitcoin was successful enough so that it no longer needed him as well as the fact that if he were to continue to be involved in Bitcoin that the chances of him getting Doxed would be too high.

He (or they) is definitely still around. I'm sure they are closely following the evolution and adaption of their creation, and likely still contributing ideas/suggestions/solutions to bitcoin, in one way or another.

Probably lurking somewhere lol, he may or may not be around here anymore but nevertheless, thanks alot satoshi.

Most likely.  Although most of the work was done before bitcoin was released

The open source nature of Bitcoin would make this very well possible.

It's entirely possible that he's still working on bitcoin or amongst us. Maybe he just wanted to get away from being the creator of it.

I really wouldn't read too much into when he last posted - I don't believe that there is anything symbolic or premeditated about it. He is gone because he is gone. Maybe he was spooked, maybe he felt that his work within the community was done - who knows?

While satoshi is a mystery, even to those that worked with him, everything he touched need not be interpreted as symbolic, or something with greater meaning.

Don't be sad that he is gone/not using that account, be glad that he brought Bitcoin to us! Tongue

Satoshi lives on the moon now. He's waiting for us to join him.

I think he is not working on anything new, since he is allready rich, first few thousands of BTC mined are his, i'm sure. This can be checked somehow i guess, who was the first miner and how much did he mine so far ?

He has little ways of being able to cash out of his bitcoin holdings. So while he may have a lot of assets (bitcoin) he has no way of exchanging them for goods/services that he needs.

That's not exactly true. Right now there a lot of exchanges open that would easily be able to deal with 50-100BTC which would easily suffice for the short term day to day costs. We don't know all of his addresses and as long as he does not withdraw excessive amounts very rapidly it'll be hard to track him down. A couple hundred of BTC over the course of a year would make him quite comfortable without drawing too much suspicion provided that the trades were done in regular small amounts.

Unless its so very few, the amount of Bitcoin days lost would be very significant and someone would notice.

And even if he traded at an exchange, any exchange, unless he trades straight crypto to crypto it would be VERY hard to conceal his identity.

I would like to say : Satoshi showed his team the miners ran with missing keys gone forever intentionally. But it is uncertain if these first coins could ever be touched.

he probably pool mined later on so he had early adopter status, hope he made it out alright

Well you would also hide, when a large list of people are looking for you, to try to discredit you, in an effort to stop you.

1. Banks
2. Governments with corrupt dictators
3. Land based Casinos and whoever back them.

......All those who, lost money, due to the technology, he/she/they created.

In some countries, people SUE other people, for the weirdest things, to get their hands on more money.

It doesn't matter if it's him working on it really. Now that his idea got popular, we don't need anything else from him. Smiley

He did transfer some of his coins in the early days of bitcoin.

Why satoshi is gone?
He is not "gone", he needed some space and time to be alone. Satoshi could be working on his next great project right now...
What could it be?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2228.msg29479#msg29479

Strange date for last posting.
Is he gone from this forum, or he is acting with another name? Why is he hiding at all?
The date of the last posting of him is also strange 12 12 2010 ( triple 12)
This can be related somehow to BTC..Huh
Any suggestions of oldschool members who actually talked with him ?
Thanks!
