I think placing confidence bounds on the network hashrate estimate help people understand that the estimates they see on websites are influenced significantly by the network luck. If there's a dip from 25000 Ghps to 20000Ghps, how much is luck and how much is an actual reflection of work being done? If it's based on a daily hashrate average, the 95% confidence interval for luck is ~ 4Ghps, so a 5Ghps drop in daily average hashrate might only be a 1 Ghps drop.

It gets much worse for hourly hashrate estimates which can have a 95% confidence interval of about +/- 36%. I wish websites would give an error guide to the estimates they produce. Some miners seem to get panicky quite easily.

9th December weekly pool statistics

Welcome, miners.

The script rewrites have worked well, except for BTCGuild. Despite the pool op (bitcointalk forum member eleuthria) spending a great deal of personal time helping me both recently and previously, providing custom urls and JSON feeds, I'm simply not confident of my ability to make the script I wrote work consistently.

To avoid future problems, I've changed the assessment of the pool hashrate to be similar to that of 50BTC.com, providing a hashrate estimate with a 95% confidence interval lower and upper bound  instead. I apologise for this, but having stable an reliable script has to take priority if I'm to get pool statistics posted on time, and this solution is a much simpler and more reliable one. Thank you for all your help in the past, eleuthria.

Many pools took a hashrate hit this week as GPU miners ceased mining. Among those who maintained their pool hashrate and so increased their proportion of the network hashrate are: Slush's pool, BitMinter,  EclipseMC,  Itzod, MTRed and p2Pool. Do these pools have a preponderance of FPGA miners? Or maybe miners that pay low electricity costs?

On a final note, I don't see any pool hopping at DeepBit on charts 4 or 7. But the pool hashrate is the lowest it has been for many months, and as a proportion of the network hashrate they are now in fourth place. Succeeding losing pool hoppers at the same time as the block reward halved is probably the main reason for this large drop in pool earnings.

Well, this has been a week of firsts. Slush's overtaking Deepbit's percentage of the network last week was no aberration, so for the first time in over a year slush's pool has a significantly high percentage of the network than Deepbit. Deepbit's hashrate slide continues unabated.

This is also the first time since I started recording the data that neither Slush nor Deepbit have been at the mercy of pool hoppers, as far as I can tell. Where have all the hoppers gone?

It's also the first full week since the bitcoin mining block reward halved, and probably because of this the first time since June that the network hashrate has dropped so precipitously for two weeks in a row. Interestingly, many pools saw a significant increase in their proportion of the network hashrate. This either indicates that they aren't losing their miners, or that the network was just very unlucky and the hashrate estimate is closer to the upper bound. Next week should make it clearer.

23rd December weekly pool statistics

Welcome, miners.

Stratum seems to be doing good things for Slush's pool - now with it's highest percentage of the network since I started recording pool statistics. And since there is still no obvious pool hopping happening at Slush's pool, the miners there must be happy.

Deepbit is also seeing no obvious pool hopping, so once again Chart 8 will be incorrect for them. In fact, looking at recent rounds from all the hoppable pools, there appears to be no pool hopping there, either. I imagine all the pool hoppers are keen to stay off Santa's naughty list this Christmas. Maybe pool hopping will start again when college break is over.

The week's average pool hashrate took another dive this week. It seems that the most recent daily hashrate indicates a spike up to 30Ghps; whether this was due to some lucky short rounds or an actual increase in connected miner hashrate will remain to be seen.

Put that computer down,  get outside and enjoy the sun! Unless you're in the Northern Hemisphere in which case keep warming yourself over your GPU. Have fun on your holidays,  and I'll see you all on New Years Eve.

Thanks for another week of updates.  I'm just wondering, do you collect any daily data that might be able to show the side effects of what happened when BTC Guild was being DDoS'd?  Started around 8 AM UTC on 12/20, and the pool was basically off for 8 hours and crippled for another 12.  Still missing a large chunk of hash power as a result (although BTC Guild historically loses ~500-600 GH/s whenever Litecoin difficulty drops).

Would be curious to see if we can get any hint of how the hash rate redistributes (if at all) when a major pool goes down.

College's should never allow their students holidays! With some bad luck a long DDoS can really increase a pool op's running expense. And since (AFAIK) no pool op has ever caved to a DDoSers demands for ransom money, it's just childish vandalism which hurts miners, pools and the network as a whole.

As to your question, it can be hard to see hashes go elsewhere.  Still, when the larger pools are hit, it's fairly clear. For example, here's what happened to Deepbit and BitMinter during a week of DDOS:

It seems that when Deepbit went down, Slush picked up some hashes, and when BitMinter went down, Ozcoin Eclipse (oops) seemed to benefit most. As far as this week's hashrate per round chart goes, it's not so clear. At about the time you mentioned, Slush's pool picked up a couple of hundred Ghps which it has since maintained but I can't see anything else obvious.

Note: Not all pools publish their round stats times in UTC so allow +/- a day.

yes, the only way to see the effect of BTCGuilds ddos was watch my stats in realtime, the new users that joined and then left the top 10 were an indication - I have been keeping a closer than usual eye this week

30th December weekly pool statistics

This week I was unable to obtain data for two pools: Maxbtc and Bitminter. In the case of Maxbtc it seems relatively simple: The Maxbtc pool op kindly provided me with an API key which appears to have ceased working. Hopefully this will be resolved next week.

In the case of Bitminter, it's a bit more serious. I can't access the website at all. Like BTCGuild last week and DeepBit before that, Bitminter has been the victim of DDoS attacks during the past week, so at a guess I'd say that's the reason for the website being inaccessible.

These pointless DDoS attacks have become the method for angsty teens to get attention or kudos with their friends or something. Certainly they're not earning anything out of it. Bitminter's admin has not even had a message from the attacker. All they seem to be doing is disrupting pooled mining infrastructure like the teenaged vandals they are.

In other news, all the top pools lost some share of the network hashrate this week except for Ozcoin, perhaps because of their innovative "POT" reward method. It does beg the question: from where are the extra hashes coming?

There is still no significant pool hopping happening this week (see figure 7) so there's no point posting figure 8 this week.

6th January 2013 weekly pool and network statistics

Maxbtc returns this week - Maxbtc's pool op fixed the problem very quickly. Thanks! Bitminter is of course back on, showing a significant drop in their share of the network due to the DDoS attacks that occurred over the past two weeks. Hopefully the pool will recover quickly.

Ozcoin continues to increase their share of the network, quite close to EclipseMC now. It will be interesting to see how much of the increase was due to Bitminter miners backing up to Ozcoin ( note on Figure 4 the slight drop in Ozcoin pool hashrate at about the time Bitminter's DDoS finished) and how much is due to their innovative payout method "POT".

Pool hopping seems to have started with the new year at BitcoinPool, Slush's pool and Deepbit.

Finally, there seems to be a problem with the script for BTCMine which I hope to fix before next week.

13th January 2013 weekly pool and network statistics

Welcome, miners.

The average network hashrate dipped again this week, despite the increase in MTGOX BTCUS$ price.  Most of the drop that can be attributed to pools was at the now inaccurately named 50BTC.com. Bitparking had a large increase in hashrate this week which puts them in the top 10, ahead of p2Pool.

Bitminter miners started to return this week after the week long DDoS attack the pool suffered.

Pool hopping is still obvious at Slush's pool, but not thsi week at Deepbit.

The problem with the script for BTCMine is now fixed.
