Too funny.  This is the first time I've been curious enough to look up mining rig rental prices.... and I ran across this rig on first click.
https://www.miningrigrentals.com/rigs/7175/
So, three days for about five bucks?  Was it worth it?  How thin are the margins with that?

==========

hmmm I think it's more like $50 isn't it?
BTC/MHash/Day   0.0003 = 16.5 (mh) x 0.0003 (per hour) x 24 (whole day) = 0.1188BTC x $420 = $49.90 per day
Definitely cheaper than buying the equipment though, and a good way to hit low difficulty coins to hold in enternal optimism.
Quite often this sort of thing is done by the devs at launch for various reasons.
I also spotted this - https://www.miningrigrentals.com/rigs/8723/  Shocked

I was going by the "Price Paid" on the rental history page.  0.012375 x $420 = $5.20   He's renting about... damn,... forgot, I'd had some problems with sgminer, quark, was gonna re-check now that I've got the drivers rolled back to 14.4.  Anyways, don't think shiny new equipment.  Downstairs I've got two motherboards quite literally nailed to the wall, P4's, 1G ram, 40G hd, and a 6950 each just chawing away.  Guess we'll just have to wait to hear what he paid, or wait until I check out a few rental agreements, procedures, etc etc, I'm a curious cat.

Of course it wasn't the miners who made out well during the gold-rush, it was their suppliers.  It looks like it's all going to come down to electricity costs, and bonus points for cooling.  Manitoba is going to be one of those puddles in the desert one of these days.  Our juice here actually costs less than in Iceland.  6c khr vs 10c, quite the difference.  Might have to talk to a friend or two about this, get something going.

Quote

Well, I think this is true with regards to the labour intensive coins (which are the majority of currently successful coins).
MUE was never set up to be part of this arms race though, and I wonder how long this drain on resources can go on before it plateaus/declines.
Certainly, long term, community, algorithm & accessibility is the key formula to success.  Can't wait to see how things develop over the next 3-5 years and beyond...fascinating stuff...really is

Yeah, there's a bit of a split-personality thing going on here.  On the one hand, you need the hash power to be distributed, but the asic arms-race has worked to concentrate it.  Optimally you'd want what I hope can happen here, one wallet per comp hashing away and securing your own personal portion of the net.  The next big thing, and it's gotta happen, and it's gonna be big, is for ALL these algos to start DOING SOMETHING!  I get positively ill when I think of the computing power of the Bitcoin network, it makes Oak Ridge's Atlas look like a pocket calculator compared to Atlas.  Only a few attempts to to link it to Folding@home and I mine Riecoin, but there must be more than folding proteins and crunching primes.  Whatever it is we're crunching though it will continue and trend higher.  I think Manitoba would be a good place for smaller independents.  Gotta wrest it away from the asics and turn it back into a cottage industry.

It is interesting.  We're writing science fiction.  There's less than 20 places in Winnipeg where you can use Bitcoin and we're mapping out the necessaries for a new financial system.  My Cryptsy balance is let's see... 0.00960782 BTC.  It was twice that earlier but I blinked, ate, went for a shit, something or other, and one of my coins tanked.  Cheesy  Oh I'm gonna take over the world for sure!

LOL!

Well, I think we should all work to our strengths..and it sounds like your crypto investing skills are about as good as mine.
I bought WDC at what will probably be known as its "peak"....

You may be interested to know (as hopefully others will too) that I am looking at making "entry level" mining packages for potential new entrants into crypto, and specifically for MonetaryUnit.

The plan is to have a "plug and play" RaspberryPi that users can buy from the MUE shop, plug in the power, plug in a LAN cable and it is already pre-configured to their wallet address (which will already have some MUE deposited to it as a starter incentive) and will tick along mining for them (utilising the hugely powerful 700mhz processor!), supporting the network etc.

It may be that we just sell a pre-configured SD card for installation rather than the hardware, but still early days.

I have at least started stage one, obtaining the RaspberryPi....

If anyone wants to help with this please let me know Smiley

Hi dev,

The basic concept of this MUE coin looks great. Me, U, Everybody as a monetary unit for all.

However, if you do want to make it accessible to all, I sincerely suggest you to fix the wallet's virus issue first:

https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/af168dd1d44943431dc4a42fc35e8b5b700bc5c4fe40efa61bfd011566d07782/analysis/1411645485/

I truly believe it's not difficult for you to fix it, otherwise I can only expect this coin will reach far less people than you can imagine.

This is an unfortunate nature of crypto wallet software, that some antivirus software identifies many wallets like this.
This is a well known issue, and you can Google it...it's kind of annoying though.

Thanks for bringing this up.

Don't think there is a way to have a wallet with built in mining software to come up completely clean.  I believe this is why some wallets do and some don't.

There is an easy way.

The dev just needs to make a clean wallet version (without mining function). There are far more people prefer not to mine and just need to hold their coins safe in a clean wallet.

For those prefer to mine inside their wallets, they can continue to use the current version (with mining function and of course, some viruses).

By doing so, people can have freedom to choose on their own which version they want to download and use.

You shouldn't refer to the wallet with mining capabilities as having "...and of course, some viruses" because it doesn't.  Problem is that hashing algorithms set off virus scanners because they look like password crackers, because in essence that is exactly what they are.  That's why keygens set them off too.  It's a false positive that we have to deal with.  The problem is that anti-virus programs can't differentiate between harmful and benign uses of an algorithm.

Edit:  I do wonder though if it might be obfuscated a bit by say, breaking it up a bit, tossing in a few jmp's, or even making some self-modifying code that would say do an XOR on a block of code before execution.

Exactly!  There are no viruses in this wallet and many others that scan dirty, they are fake positives!  Unfortunately however this leaves us somewhat accustomed to seeing them all the time in these wallets and that itself makes it harder to determine real infected wallets and false positives.

Just today some asshole copied a new ann thread so he could distribute an infected wallet to people........this was SeedCoin!  Gotta be cautious in the crazy crypto world:-)

I do get what you're saying however I think the people savvy enough to virus check the wallet are savvy enough to realise a few positives is expected.
I think those that would be put off are unlikely to be affected as they wouldn't notice.
Maybe I'm being naive but I think that's probably quite realistic.

Just to let you all know a 1 million MUE deposit has been made from the pre-mine to the faucet, which has been increased again to 10 MUE every 12 hours.

In total so far ~2 Million MUE has been used from the pre-mine for services, promotions and give-aways.
No pump and dump.
No quick profit and walk away.
No big hype and heavy promotion.
Sorry about that, just thought it could be done a different way  Grin

Makes my 2400 (mined so far) look a bit paltry.  Most excellent launch.  So who needs an exchange for commerce?  What I need is someone to basically just answer questions for a couple of hours while I bring myself back up to speed in a few areas, someone who knows a bit about blockchain programming.  By the way, do you think that doing something as simple as xor'ing the hashing code would hide it from scanning eyes?  I wouldn't think so, or else every damn malware author would be doing the same simple trick.  In any case, I propose trading time for time and expertise.  Whoever's time on IRC, my time doing whatever and maybe some fine photography.

Don't forget you are solo mining right after install as it automines on startup.
Granted only running on one thread, but you can increase that from the in wallet menu if you want
Settings > Options > Mining

Please have a quick look through our FAQ http://www.monetaryunit.org/faq/ which also includes details of how to set up CPUminer, which seems to work much faster than the in wallet miner.  In wallet mining on my humble machine on one thread is ~6kh and CPUminer on one thread is ~40kh, which seems a pretty impressive increase for not a lot of work.

Did you code this coin or get someone else in on it?  Why can't the same code that's in the mining software be spliced into the wallet?  Damn... they've outlawed object-oriented programming and I didn't even notice!  Please tell me we've still got C++!  Cheesy

2400 sounds pretty good, you have't been doing it for long have you, about a week??
PM me your wallet address so I can send you a thank you for your research earlier in this thread.... Smiley
I suspect your technical expertise is beyond mine.  I'm not the dev of this coin, rather the project lead.  I have brought the idea and the expertise together to realise it, however your premise of trading time for expertise pretty much sums up this whole open source philosophy, I don't see you having a problem doing that, and I reckon within 6 months you're gonna be kicking some serious arse developing coins and code  Smiley
btw your photography is pretty awesome..one of the many benefits of Canada I guess (you mentioned ur Canadian a few pages back).

wrt exchanges/commerce it is inevitable that MUE will be listed on an exchange, but this is not something I am rushing.  As possible as it is that MUE could be a "bartering token" this isn't really the direction I would like to take the coin (not saying either is better or worse).
Stable, low per unit "fiat value" per MUE is where I think the value lies, offering merchants a "low" risk crypto alternative with plenty of liquidity and obviously fast confirmation times.
I don't have a time line for approaching exchanges to get listed, but it is certainly not a short term goal.

Ah yeah, see previous post, I have "hired" the technical talent....
You know C++ is pretty much the backbone of cryptos right? https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Software#Bitcoin_clients_2
