At this point I'd say cryptonote is far better than zerovert, primarily because zerovert is closed source and there is no way to tell that transactions can't be doublespent by the developers[...]Also, I believe ring signatures are more mature technology than zerocoin.
That was my feeling, but you backed it with some facts. If the dev can get back in here and open the source code, that'd be nice! Otherwise, what are you waiting for dev? People already know this is (possibly) the first successful Zerocoin implementation, the word has spread.
There's an incredible amount of hype around Zerocoin and Zerocash even if it's true that they are inferior to cryptonote technology.
Dev has already mentioned they chose to keep the source closed in order to establish a network effect.
I wouldn't expect to have the source for a few months.
In the meantime, there are very good papers written on the web, for you to go through, if you would like to get a good understanding of the technology.
It's been analyzed quite well, and has a real chance. Just like everything else, it's gonna go through improvements. I hope over time, both zerocash, zerocoin, and cryptonote can be developed to their fullest, with a working implementation, so that we can decide.
That will be years off though
