So, what we have here is a failure to communicate.

Over the past few months, the lack of communication on the dev's part has caused a burgeoning vacuum which has filled with all sorts of misinformation and unfulfilled promises.

I probably speak for at least a decent majority of the VTR investors/followers in saying that no one really actively cares who the developer of this or any project is. Some of us have invested in projects with people called "evil-knievel" with no real life identity.

The issue here is that without any clear captain of the ship this project is quickly turning into what could appear to be a long drawn out scam. I'm hesitant to call it a scam because we simply don't have enough information right now.

Now that there is information coming in from a party (pnoch) who has stated that they are not the developer claiming that the developer's account (vtorrent) has been compromised, it stands to reason we should exercise the same caution we would with any project from now on if this were the case.

It's no small matter that the lead developer of a project which is based upon computer security concepts has had their account compromised. There are phenomenal risks that come into play when accounts are compromised and we should all be aware of these, including but not limited to:
  • The potential release of software which may compromise our computers either now or at a later date
  • The potential release of false information/updates in order to try and inflate the price (keep in mind VTR traded $500,000 USD in the past 24 hours)
  • The potential for source code and other information to have been stolen and sold off on the darknet
  • The potential that there has been some form of disagreement with people involved in developing the project and someone is trying to actively sabotage it

Whoever the dev is, in my own opinion, this is what is required to move onwards:
  • Sign the genesis block or some block that was associated with the dev at some point (inb4 Craig S. Wright)
  • Post a tweet on the twitter account (vtorrentcrypto) as well as post on the YouTube channel (link)
  • Post some sort of update on the github account (github.com/vtorrent/)
  • Show that the gmail account (vtorrent.crypto@gmail.com) is under the control of the developer (whoever that is)
  • All of these accounts or as many as possible should post some form of uniform statement (i.e. signing a statement with a key) in order for us to know they are under the control of the same party.

Given how severe the lack of communication has been, and given the events that have taken place in the past 24 hours which has raised a serious number of questions I'd also say that the following is required:
  • A clear indication of what the current status of this project is. This question has been left unanswered repeatedly for some time now and does not work to inspire confidence from anyone.
  • A clear plan of regular updates and some form of assurance that this project hasn't been stolen or otherwise interfered with by parties trying to manipulate the price

As a stretch goal, I'd also personally appreciate some sort of assurance that this won't be happening again. I've extended every patience towards this project and the events of the past 24 hours have basically been nothing more than a giant slap in the face. I can't speak for everyone as agreeing with that, but there is certainly some sentiment that we're dealing with either a problematic developer who has no interest in delivering a final product or some sort of disagreement that happened with developers who have been involved with this project.

That is the beautiful thing about forks. It's a no lose situation and you get 2-for-1 coins.

I guess my only question, ik_do - if there's no torrent code at all available to fork from, why would a developer want to come and takeover/fork this project versus just starting a new one without all the headache/baggage?

I guess my only question, ik_do - if there's no torrent code at all available to fork from, why would a developer want to come and takeover/fork this project versus just starting a new one without all the headache/baggage?

There's a number of things that make the project interesting. Including exchange listing and mostly the age, there's no chance you would get a coin to get this sort of market or community attention nowadays unless you were throwing major money behind it.

Regardless I am only optimistic about this project in a very cautious manner. Given the reappearing act that occurred recently my own personal interest has reduced quite significantly. I'm not sure of the worth of putting time, energy and money behind a project if it's going to end up being a game of whack-a-mole with the developer.

The same developer who so far has dodged every question relating to the status of the project and only seems to appear when competing projects are bought up.

Besides this, there has been another competing project which has come to my attention recently. Although I don't care for the project personally and don't have any interest in investing in it, it did bring to light one of the key limitations of trying to implement torrents on a blockchain, which is something I touched upon in the slack some time ago--they would have to be different torrent files and other torrent clients would thus be incompatible with them. This is a huge factor in everything. Whether there is another project or not, I'm not so sure that torrents are the way to go anymore. I'm still interested in a marketplace for files and bandwidth, but the key question right now is whether torrents are the technology to achieve this.

The best question I'm asking myself right now is if a Bittorrent / Bitcoin implementation is pretty much the holy grail and there have been at least somewhere in the region of 10-15 projects to attempt it... How come none have had anything to show for it?

Of particular note is JoyStream, which has had the most backing of any project I'm aware of in this space (in the region of millions as far as I'm aware, but I can't find an exact figure). One would assume that with such a large financial backing the project would flourish, but instead, it hasn't had a release in something like 2 years. The team still update their reddit and such by replying to people who are interested, but they haven't really shared any progress in quite some time.

JoyStream's biggest limitation has of course been the fact that its been engineered to run off of Bitcoin.
3 months ago in June, the founder of JoyStream made a comment about the $150 million USD that Bancor had received in funding:
Quote
"As someone actually building a decentralized application on bitcoin, it really makes me think what I am giving up in terms of community support and funding by staying on the platform."
(source)

Supposing that JoyStream pivots to a new platform besides Bitcoin at any point in the near future (which is main criticism most people have of it, being that Bitcoin transactions are hugely expensive and Bitcoin is not suited to thousands of small transactions) then this project has no real purpose.

Again, I've been touching on the subject of the 'race' to deliver the kind of idea that vTorrent (presumably) has been in previous posts on here. At any time another entity can easily move, shift or create something entirely new that could win the race before this project or any other. It's a bad prospect to be in a space of daily dramatic change (for instance the recent resurfance of pnoch) and keep the ship sailing towards the same heading.

Your comment holds true, I have no doubts about it. It would take a significant amount of time to even get a fork started, and time is not something that we can just assume is on our side because the other 15 attempts at Torrent on blockchain never made a dent. Project number 16 might come along in 10 minutes time.

All Good now has gone through, though the wallet still shows the transaction as unconfirmed!

Just an update of sorts.
It appears a significant amount of accounts have been compromised in the past few weeks (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=24.0) and that there must be some form of exploit going around for the bitcointalk.org forums

This may mean that the dev account being compromised is factual, although its impossible to tell for certain.

Having said that, there's still been no email replies or news or information or any attempt at telling anyone what is going on from what I've seen.

This is what I said about vTorrent in terms of being a moonshot/crazy risk project:

There's another project aiming to achieve exactly what vTorrent was supposed to (if this developer had ever bothered to post a single fucking github commit in the past calendar year). And guess what? It's made by the Popcorn Time guy.

https://icomagazine.com/flixxo-decentralized-video-content/

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2168758.0
Flixxo is going to be a blockchain-powered video/content market where users are rewarded in tokens for "creating, watching, or seeding videos over BitTorrent"

Great. Great. Great.
Where's the dev? Not a single word in ages. Logs in plenty and doesn't say anything. No responses to emails, no responses to PMs, no responses to this thread.

This is now the second project aiming to do exactly what this project was supposed to do that I've stumbled upon in the past few days.

Don't forget to ask pnoch about the status of this project and if he will be able to compete with FLIXXO. The email is: vtorrent.crypto@gmail.com

If pnoch isn't going to update us I'm going to invest in FLIXXO. Why did he start the coin and a thread at bitcointalk if he doesn't want to keep the community around this coin. Or maybe he fooled us all and sold the tech to FLIXXO dev team/joined them.  Huh
Vtr dev team is not even trying to reclaim their account or make a new one. They gave up on this project and the investors.

Sorry but this isn't good enough.
There are people coming in the slack trying to pretend they got responses from him with insider information and no one can prove it.

Even if he said it's still in development, that isn't saying much if he won't even come on the thread and explain what's going on or message people who have been following the project since the early days.

Have you ever considered that it could be your aggressive attitude that the Dev doesn't respond to?

This guy seems as genuine as they come. There is no reason to slap him down and call him out because you don't believe him.

I understand this FUD, people waiting for years, people missed a lot of others pumps ... and silence from developers.
But what I can't understand, who's buying this coin during last 3 months with huge green candles sometimes even for hundreds btc in one order for price much higher from market?
