ThunderMine, Yep, this is obvious if you not first time buyer, this is from their cloud, i'm glad if i receive miner in working condition  Grin

Did I miss something on their website for the product?  It references a "final production run", not used cast offs from their own mining farm.  One unit I received looks pretty good overall, the other looks like it's been running somewhere sitting on a dirt floor for several months.  Neither appear to achieve a stable hash rate near the claimed spec.  I'm lucky to get over 1TH out of either one although the GUI claims all the chips are fine.

Only running around 48 C on temps (seen 51 a few times briefly) in an ambient temperature of around 72 degrees F (that's fairly normal room temp for the metric minded), but with the suboptimal output, not surprising I guess.  Fans at 3360 RPM at 48C on the dirty one.  Seems like the fans could back down a bit.  Other is slightly less and runs slightly hotter.

I got the impression from the reviews that they built a pretty good miner, but I'm getting a little different impression first hand with these two.  I'd be willing to bet the fan on the dirty one fails pretty soon.  The dirty fan is definitely louder than the other.  I can hear it over my ASICMiner Prisma even, and that thing is loud.  At least it achieves (exceeds most the time) its claimed spec for the noise it makes though.  I'm way outside the -5% on both these units.  Average hash after an hour, 998.88GH/s on the dirty one which seems to run slightly better than the other speed wise.  I've tried different pools including AntPool with the same results.  Has 1947 HW errors in an hour too.

How do I tell whether I have the latest firmware?

definitely something weird going on..
my was new, shiny, and unused.. unless they did a really good job of cleaning mine.

I went back and looked all all 4 of my new ones really closely, the ONLY wear and tear I could see is possibly during the QA burn in period, there's very light dust on the edge of the fan, like you'd expect after being run for a day or two at most.

The PCBs are all 100% clean, no hidden dust in any of the nooks and crannies, no dust inside any of the heatsinks.

I don't believe any of my 4 were used.  I have two more arriving monday, I'll check them closely as well.

Mine has a visbile layer of dust on the controller board and much more than "light dust" on the fan.  You can see the dirt on my fan from across the room.

Please DO NOT place cardboard or any flammable item on top of the Antminer.  It can be a fire hazard.

What about some thin plastic like the sides. Does it get hotter on top then the sides?

[Unofficial mod] If you choose a plastic type with a Tm of 100C+ you'll be good. Alternatively you could use electrical or duct tape.

do you know what size screws i should get for the back fan?

also would adding a back fan decrease the temps enough to slow down the front one??
what if i used one of those fan speed adapters.. im assuming the fan is just a regular 4 pin pwm connector?
i have a few of those that come with CM fans that are preset to 1800 and 1600 and 1200. altho i think those speeds are set for a 2500 rpm fan, i think its 70% 60% and 50%

Go to metric screws section in Lowes and I think that they are PM 4mm-0.7X45mm in length if you install 38mm fan WITH grill or 40mm in length if no grill or for a 25mm extra fan. I think that they sell 3 in a bag, which is less convenient, but cost is only $1.25/bag.

I own a metal fab shop, would anyone be interested in either galvanized, aluminum or stainless covers for their S5s? Cardboard is a really bad idea.

You guys do realise that its next to impossible to tell whether the units where used or not.

Just because there is no dust, doesn't mean it wasn't used before.

They could of kept the miners in a filtered room without dust OR they could of just replaced the heatsinks and fans.

i think its safe to assume every one was powered up at least once.. id hope for a few days to see if everything was working ok.

plus, im betting since it takes time to make and store 1000s at a time, a few have been sitting around for weeks.. maybe a couple months..

surely there will be some dust on it.

buy them for 67 cents each i got like 16 or so for 4 to 5 bucks. i forget the size or take one of the screws off the miner now to match them up that worked for me. i got the size I needed that way. at ACE sense it was the closest one to me .

What material would you guys want it made out of? Galvanized would be cheapest, while stainless would be the most expensive option. I'd need to produce about 15-20 at a time minimum to make it worth firing up the water jet and keep prices as low as possible. Of course costs would be a little lower for bigger batches.

I don't own an S5, are there any technical drawings for it anywhere so I can get dimensions? If not, I'd need to get my hands on one.

The Chinese aren't wasting money on filtered rooms. That's why they're winning Tongue

No, not enough to make any significant difference. You could use a resistor cable but I can't think of one which is rated for the 1A+ the fan uses. That's 2W of reduction that tiny resistor has to dissipate, a huge huge amount. Replace the fan if you want to get it quieter.

It depends on price.  But I would love a nice metal one (assuming it's not high and adds a lot to ROI).  I like the idea for sure, but comes out to cost on me.
