How many watts needed for overclocked S5? About 750?

I use a DELL 750 W Server grade PSU and it works fine at 400 Frequency. Also have an 850 Corsair Gold ATX and it does too - of course.

See user Sidehack on here for good deals on the Dells.

Of the 6 I just ordered one is running noticeably hotter than the rest.  I think I know what I'm doing next weekend.

Temperature difference between the 2 hashing PCB was reported to the engineers and it was reviewed.  So far, it is not the hardware caused issues, but rather where and how the miners are being deployed and managed per the engineers.

The temperature sensors are also rather crude, and on a large scale there will be plenty of 'miscalibrated' ones. I'd be more suspicious of the sensor reading incorrectly than one board running significantly hotter.

Bitmain wisely chose the LM75a to provide temps to the I2C bus.  It's sort of the industry standard, not 'crude' at all:

"The LM75A is an industry-standard digital temperature sensor with an integrated sigma-delta analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and I2C interface. The LM75A provides 9-bit digital temperature readings with an accuracy of ±2°C.

Performance-wise, we should see miners within a few degrees of each other, the 10C variance is extreme.  Same air source, same fan, etc.

I dunno how I fixed it but I fixed it. I powered everything down and reset the router and then all of my rigs came back hashing. Gremlins I guess.

My new batch 5 S5 is 'new' (definitely NOT used) and so far everything works-'knocks on wood'.
it looks about 2-3db less loud at ~71-73dB at one feet (in comparison with ear busting batch 1), but maybe this is more wishful thinking than anything else.

I'm starting to think these miners should have been what the C1's were.

They run with that open-built extremely loud full speed fan and still are over 50C.

Even the SP20's at Fan speed 50 are more quiet than these things.

I will use a new cheaper mod tonight-we'll see if it works. ~$20-24/miner.
Lowes in my area is completely out of pan M4-0.7 35-45mm screws. had to buy hex.
I surmise that S5 modders scooped them all up, LOL.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835220056

they seem to flow alot of air and are a tad quieter..
probably not as quiet as the fans on the s3, but as long as they dont whine im ok.

There's not much you can do out there with fans unless you use two of those Noctua IPPC 3000 models. They have beeb bought up everywhere, assuming S5 owner's are buying them up by the dozens. Any fan(s) that have a high enough CFM
to properly cool the miner will always be too loud.

But I'm still curious as to what your plans are?

"Yobit pump alert software" Link in my signature!

Ive seen mixed results in this thread with regard to overclocking. I saw a few people mention 1.4Ths. Was it stable? What voltage? How much more wattage was added for extra 300ghs? What is the most efficient power supply to use? Many have said EVGA. I was considering buying the EVGA 220-T2-1600-X1 1600W ATX12V / 80 PLUS Titanium certified Full Modular Power Supply to run (2) S5's overclocked. What are your thoughts on this? Is overclocking and getting about 300 ghs more worth the extra electricty cost? One last question, I currently own (20) S3+ and I love them. I especially like the "load balance" feature. My S4 does not have load balance. Does the S5's have this feature?

Thanks in advance.

Vegas

I want to make sure everyone knows that I just released my software called "Yobit pump alert". THis is custom software that uses an algo to detect the start of a pump here on yobit, the second it starts. YOu can even filter the coins you see by price. Most pumps start less than 100 sats , so you can easily filter the cheap coins, so they are the only ones displayed Smiley https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1945937.msg20241953#msg20241953

The S5 are running great and so I've moved them to CGminer 4.90 and 312.5MHz.  The highest reported temp is 57C with an S3 push fan and no pull (ambient ~72F, fan rpm 3240).  Am intending to try the FHP141 as a pull.
My final two S5 shipped Friday and would have arrived Monday, but somehow, the UPS driver screwed up the delivery and a different driver completed Tuesday -- bummer on the whole day delay, lost some good WestHash payout Sad!!!

Have received two each by USPS EMS, Fedex, UPS, and all would have been "two day" delivery (excluding Sunday and the UPS SNAFU), lowest shipping cost was EMS via DHgate back in January.  The latest two (with S3 push fans) are setup side by side on the floor of my coolest room running 312.5MHz and temps 47/42 and 43/40 (top temp was 59 Vs 52 at 350MHz over a 2-1/2 hr check out). That first consistently runs by far the highest temp and fan speed of my three pair and makes me consider the heat sink paste mod described earlier** (currently 2760 Vs 2160 rpm) -- it also had pre-damaged Phillips head screws by whatever gorilla installed and warped the plastic side panels (since loosened).  Am expecting to give Silverstone FHP141 pull fans a try this coming weekend.

Thanks again Bitmain for the timely ordering assistance (Janet/Tim) and quick turnaround of the order -- here's looking forward to learning about the next generation!

On my question - why i recieved secondhand shit different revisions?
I can confirm they are shipping used (scratches, dust) miners with different board revisions: v1.5, v1.7 and v1.9
Not much a problem for me but i would appreciate some coupons for S7...

How many AMP breaker do I need to power 3 S5s running on one pair of outlets? 2 in 1 and 1 in the other. 2 are running on 15 AMP breaker right now but third coming today.

I am running at Freq 400 right now but will be dialing back to default because it is starting to get warmer here.

I have a 3 X 15 AMP breaker powering a baseboard heater in my garage and can bypass that for rigs if need be.

120 Volts here.

I have three on a 20 amps breaker at home.

I thought I had a 15 AMP but as it turns out I have a 30 AMP and can confirm that 3 S5s will run on this. I am not overclocking anymore. All at 350 Frequency. Purring along. New 20 AMP breaker goes in today so I can buy more Smiley

New tech now available from Spondoolies: 100 TH/S Rig for $5000. This just rendered all other bitcoin miners antiques. Only allowing 2 units per customer per month and they will not farm with them.

BITMAIN needs to counter with something on this level at a better price!

Only selling 1000 units per month (still a lot) and you must enter your name in a draw to get the privilege of buying from them for their first batch. This is going to boost difficulty to dizzying heights. Mine while you still can because S5s will not be worth it soon.

DAMN!
