Title: [LIST]Open Merit Source Applications, waiting list.
Post by: TheBeardedBaby on October 31, 2019, 01:27:16 PM
Disclaimer: The is only informative list and contains active applications of users disregarding their, behavior, reputation, trust feedback, trust status. etc. I do not take responsibility if any of them turns out to be an abuser

Since the old topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2823944.0) was not updated for more than a year, it's time to make an updated lists of the open MS applications.

Thanks guys for helping.

Quickseller and tk808 are already merit sources: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4523027.0

I believe Kalemder (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=487377) from the Turkish section also submitted a merit source application (he listed many valuable messages from the local boards

which later led to a source application after suggestions by the community)...

I think the list is for Merit source applications that have not yet been approved by Theymos (open applications). AFAIK, @Coolcryptovator is now a merit source.
I stand to be corrected thou

I think you're correct.

Theymos really should make a decision on these guys who applied to be merit sources--I know at least one member, Jet Cash, expressed much frustration at being a merit source and seemed to be losing enthusiasm for the position.  He may have changed his mind since, but I bet he isn't the only one.  I think the forum needs members who really want to be merit sources, because they're the ones who'll take it seriously and will probably do a good job.

Theymos made a bunch of new merit sources last September, some of which hadn't even applied.  I don't know if they ever turned out to be good ones or not, because I don't even know who they all are.  I was one of them, and I'm glad he made me a merit source but I think it would be a good idea to tap at least some of those who applied in 2019.  There aren't many, and more circulating sMerits might ease the difficulty of ranking up a little bit.

OP, thanks for listing them.  I had been wondering how many applications there were that hadn't been decided on.

Suggestions:
1.Sort by date of applications
2.Collection of 10 Posts if achieved or not. (Ex. Hhampuz haven't started a single thing on his own application until now, so 10 posts has not been filled yet)

Its also necessary IMO. That's all.

🤔🤨 I thought Hhampuz, pugman and bitmover was already a Source?...

exactly that's the one, I think @Kalemder eventually turned it into an official application, if not on that particular thread, then elsewhere, and he addressed his post to theymos,

let's see if he (Kalemder) comes to confirm it here...

This thread is better than a bump.
I hope theymos will review pending applications and give at least a small amount of smerit to those who will do a good job

What’s pretty amazing is that nearly all applicants have a Local Board backbone, besides being well known on the main English boards. It’s good to have candidates that would perform on multiple boards, whilst looking over Local Boards in the event.

Title: Re: [LIST]Open Merit Source Applications, waiting list.
Post by: tranthidung on October 31, 2019, 04:10:16 PM
@iasenko made a creative and helpful thread for all merit source applicants. The thread is nearly same as list of ban appeal (months ago) created by Alex_Sr ([BAN APPEAL]UPDATE: Total table + Ban status (Need feedback from Global mods) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5144410.0)). They both help admins, and moderators have one place to pay attention on.

Nevertheless, there is at least one adverse effect from it, and somehow goes beyond core vision of theymos when he launched the merit system.

I will not be posting a definitive list of merit sources (so that people don't bug them too much), though you'll soon figure out who they are if you pay attention.
There is another thread has nearly same purpose but it focuses on merit sources, not applied merit sources (from @Coin_1, as I remembered).

Basically, despite the fact that such threads go beyond theymos' core vision but they do not negatively affect the forum, and as I saw merit sources or merit source applicants nowadays do no longer care too much about their privacy or secret to be sources.

Anyway, @iasenko did not make anything wrong and I believe most of the thread's viewers do not. Moreover, good merit sources will do reject any sort of merit-begging efforts that chase or attack them when merit beggars know they are already merit sources.

I can't believe that some application for merit source are from last year!
After my own application for merit source I had to wait 3-4 months and I was thinking it's to long but some people waiting almost 2 years!
I can't understand why.
Any way, good luck to everybody!
I think that specially local sections needs more merit source since some users write only in their own languages and deserve equal chance to receive merit for god quality posts.

When I initially applied for being the merit source to support my local board, none were really aware that there was already a merit source dedicated for my local board since they were really very busy with their real life and haven't logged in the forum for quite some time. Probably around August - September this year, they became active after a 8 month long inactivity time frame and have confirmed that they were indeed a source but had been allocated negligible source merits each month. They were really a great poster, but once I got to know about they being a source I thought of taking back my application, but considering their inactivity I have once again started bumping it back to support the fellow forum members. My smerits are not really enough and I have been too stingy in giving away my smerits.

Quite a handful of them have ranked up (from Newbie - Full Member) solely by posting in my local board and when they didn't receive enough merits I recommended their topic to the merit sources. Since for majority of the time we speak only English throughout the country as well as in the forum, merit sources and global moderators find it easy to merit the worthy posts as well as handle my reports. English is the only primary reason that we are still functioning as a better non-spammy board even without any help from theymos either for the appointment of a merit source or for the appointment of the moderator.

I can see some have applied in 2018 February, why can't these people be informed that they are basically rejected? For whatever reasons. No need to keep them hanging and waiting around for more than a year. Specially speaking of Pugman and Alex_Sr.

I am not sure if they are already a MS, if they are then my rant is useless.

Beyond that Meriting low ranked users has increasingly been becoming a tough job that even the moderators are not doing diligently these days.

I get it, I only said in the past that "Getting Merit isn't a right, it's a privilege" - but right now its becoming a circle-jerking club.

Low rank members have got the short end of the stick. undoubtedly. More than Heros like us.
I've seen some times merit is passed around among high ranking accounts when they have already reached the topmost levels of their accounts.

What's sad is they're doing it by posting memes and jokes while the low rank members are making really unique posts.
Yet they're either getting bogged down by negligence, ignorance, or by signature spammers.

This list will definitely increase best candidates chances and forum admin could check all open applications easily here. Best part is that old application's will also come under selection process again. It will be much easier for theymos to pick best applicants one by one from the list. Hopefully we will get more new merit sources soon who will encourage quality posters by giving a good amount of merit.

For old applications, if theymos had to pick, he would have done so already. No need for him to wait 1 year. And 1 year old applications are irrelevant by now as well. Alex and Pugman, if they are not merit sources yet, should make new applications.

If the forum and the merit system have worked and supported each other well enough since late of the January of 2018, I don't think we really need more merit sources. More sources is good but not vital thing to maintain the forum's and the merit system's performance.

Recent months, I have seen very little complaints on users who got troubles with the merit system and unable to rank up just because lack of merit sources.

Merit sources do boost post quality of some users and do not affect post quality of others. I meant post quality depends mainly on users themselves and not depends on the merit system or any merit source or how many merit sources the forum has in total.

Shit posters or bounty reporters are among types of users who do not affect by the merit system and merit sources. They are kind of unchangeable users who don't care anything (post quality, rank, total merit sources, their potential to earn merits) except their daily/ weekly annoying bounty reports.

I've seen some times merit is passed around among high ranking accounts when they have already reached the topmost levels of their accounts.

We have debated this topic severally and the stats shows, lower ranked users are those getting the fairest share of the merit system. Most of the high merited members you see now were once lower ranked users and merit earned contributed to our ranking up. When you see one or two merit given to legendary or hero member you don't consider that a waste especially as every rank deserve to be merited for their post quality. Every rank gets merited for funny memes at time not just legendary accounts.

I earned more merit as a lower ranked users compared to now that I'm a higher ranked user. That along should give you an idea, generally people tend to merit lower ranked users more but it's up to this guys to put in efforts into constructing their posts and contribution positively and I'm quite positive they won't go unnoticed.

I can see some have applied in 2018 February, why can't these people be informed that they are basically rejected? For whatever reasons. No need to keep them hanging and waiting around for more than a year.

It's not mandatory to make a new application but they can try that, @Coolcryptovator did exactly that and it worked for him since your timing could be a key factor to influence theymos's decision making. That their applications hasn't been accepted doesn't automatically means they're less qualifed to be source since most of them are quite quality contributors.

Merit source in each local boards is beneficial if "ranking members" will be the basis. Base on my observations, our local board, "Pilipinas," has a lot of merit activity. Because each local member is supporting each other and we have our own merit source, which is Cabalism13, He is good in terms of giving merit in our local members.

And again, based on my observation. Other international boards have a small merit activity, I think we need to boost the merit source assignments in terms of boards. The local community is beneficial if you want to rank up and gain some merits (for me). Still, other boards seem to be a lack of members giving merits. I think that is our problem right now.

And again, based on my observation. Other international boards have a small merit activity, I think we need to boost the merit source assignments in terms of boards. The local community is beneficial if you want to rank up and gain some merits (for me). Still, other boards seem to be a lack of members giving merits. I think that is our problem right now.

@Cabalism13 is one of the local merit sources with one of the biggest monthly allocation (100 smerit) that's why your local board is very active in regards to him meriting you guys. Most local sources don't have as much. In as much as I buy into the idea of supporting local boards I don't think we should turn those boards into merit farming grounds where native users just use to rank up.

We have recieved numerous report on the forum of favoritism been the order of the day in most of these local board, which is then used to increase their voting power to elect DT members etc until that can be put under controlled, giving more power might just be a wrong move.

We've had some discussion about the merit distribution in our local board before. Before the cryptotalk campaign where many high ranked members woke up and became active again, merits coming from the local community were not that high. Without other merit sources like Darkstar_ who frequently visits our local board before, we would not be exceeding a hundred per week.

Thanks @Vispilio and @iasenko.
Yes this is my Merit source application:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5183702.0

Added, I see you edited your subject, now it look more like application :)

You can remove me from the list, I don't want to be a merit source any longer and as such I did not proceed with my application thread (will archive it now, thanks).

No problem, removed.

Sorted by date of application. If I see another application (like Hhampuz's one) I will add the additional column with status.

OP updated.

@Cabalism13 is one of the local merit sources with one of the biggest monthly allocation (100 smerit) that's why your local board is very active in regards to him meriting you guys.
Can't deny the fact that our board is really in need of Merits just to be active. Majority of users there, are crypto earners and the ranking system together with the Merit system limits them to get the priviledge of earning. This forum have served many people already, it also helped most users. Now that I'm here, a Source, I would like to help users who are quite good enough to contribute on our board especially on this forum, Several minutes ago I helped a user to rank up from Member to Full Member.

100 sMerits isn't that large AFAIK, its just that there are already a number of you guys who are a Merit Source for the whole community, and IMO, that's the reason why the admin can't adjust the allocations of every Source. In my case, I already made a 2nd attempt for an increase of sMerits, for I know to myself I already did my job on my local. Still waiting for an opportunity to have an increase.

I was too lazy these past few days I ended up not using 30 of my sMerits and just used it all now. It's not a smart way of using it but still I know that the users who received it truly deserves it. Though I rarely give on some other Boards.

Enough sMerits?
-Yes
Then users will do their best to make an activity and somewhat contribute to a thread that makes them earn some.
Then comes with a payment where users joined a bounty.
Then an endless cycle of Merits

P. S. Now that I have mentioned it, shouldn't we all join Foxpup's Club?

I suppose that individual considerations of Merit Source (MS) applications are taking a lot of time from admins. It seems to me that this is an inefficient way and automatic approach can be more optimal.

For example, the user could independently choose to be a MS in the profile, if fulfil the following requirements:
- rank from Sr. Member;
- has more than 500 received merit from 20 members or above;
- has more than 250 sent merit to 10 members or above (not counting members, from which the user got merit);
- has less than 5 sendable merit.

These conditions are intended to minimize the risk of abuses by chosen MS.

https://i.imgur.com/XVdIK0o.png

I also think it would be convenient if there will be a button in the profiles to decline to be a MS.

It's taking time because from theymos's view the forums doesn't need more sources or smerits. When the forum is in need of those, theymos doesn't waste any second to appoint new sources. The individual consideration give theymos and other forum users an idea on what the applicates consider to be a quality posts (that's why you're mandated to qoute 10 quality posts, probably lacking or don't have enough merit.

It also opens the users merit sending history to the public for review. In general this current method gives the community a voice to air their opinion on who should be or shouldn't be a source based on their meriting record and other forum contribution although theymos makes the final decision. The automatic system will take out the transpirancy and fun out of merit source application.

Exactly. Its not like theymos hasn't seen these applications, but there currently isn't a need or the candidate isn't well suited. Only theymos knows all the little bits of criteria that needs to be filled, and the only one with the tools to monitor the merit situation. Theymos is extremely active, and every time I've had an interaction with him there's been a response within 12 hours. That's going back a number of years, and of course my merit source application a year or so ago.

AFAIK, @Coolcryptovator is now a merit source.
I think you're correct.
Just for confirmation, almost 5 months back I become merit source.

I know at least one member, Jet Cash, expressed much frustration at being a merit source and seemed to be losing enthusiasm for the position.
LOL, second that. I have seen so many merit post by Jet Cash regarding merit, how should spent, where to spent, that guy deserve or not and so on. That's the reason why theymos should choose merit sources from active member and who are enough friendly to spend their smerit rather than  expressed  frustration.

Good job OP, most of applicant deserve merit source in my opinion. But it would not happen instantly. I had waited more then six months. I strongly believe most of from the list will be on merit source today or tomorrow.

20895 merit per 30 days between all of the merit sources looks to be a good amount of sMerit to distribute. More than enough to rank up 41 hero members or 83 sr members per month. Making it too easy for members to get merit would render the merit system ineffective at what it was brought in for.

There's scope for re allocating existing merits between sources. Many sources are struggling to get their sMerit stash depleted, whilst others, like micgooossens are always thriving for more merits.

My suggestion would be to remove those are not depleting their sources unless its minuscule amounts and get new sources which are eager to award others. The thing about giving certain members massive amounts of merit is there is no diversity in the way they reward. Its better to have 300 different active merit sources than 100 with big allocations.

Very good idea @iasenko to create a waiting list. This should help theymos to review it and have a detailed overview of pending applications. Maybe we can expect to get appointed until christmas.  :)

Are those 20.895 the total of "new created" sMerit hand out to the merit-sources?

If so the 300 for the one active merit-source (qwk) responsible for the German community is close to nothing in comparison.

It’s overall, for the aggregate of all the 130 Merit Sources, although each one has a different assigned allowance, varying from something over a dozen (or so), to a couple that seem to have over 1K per 30 days (see https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsend to get a rough idea).

Although averages are a bit deceiving here due to the large variance, the average number of allocated sMerits would be 160,73.

Before people (i mean MSs) needed to open a thread to look for good posters and comping that there are no posts to merit them, nowadays the sources complain that there is not enough source merit.

Would it be helpful to show both the application date and the approve date (if you know that information) for those members who were approved?  I'm thinking that it could provide some meaningful information for future merit source applicants to see that there is a decent amount of variation in how long applicants might have to wait before getting approval, and maybe even might inform future MS applicants regarding what kinds of things to do (or not do) while a MS application is pending.

By the way, didn't I see that you, iasenko, are not yet a merit source?  You should probably apply, since you have been very good at providing good information to the forum and also filtering through information in order to help others to discern the difference between good and bad posts, so might as well add yourself to the group of merit source applicants, if you have not already done so.

Second by the way:
It will be interesting to see if Coin-1 is able to identify which merit sources have been purged from such merit source status in his thread:   [TOP-200] The most generous users giving merits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4523027.msg40734583#msg40734583).  I would imagine that he follows threads like this one for clues regarding which members have become merit sources.

It seems that the applications are approved in batches when theymos has time to review them. Last big change was in January IIRC. Based on some wording in the recent e-mail to merit sorcerers we can probably expect another review in about six months or so.

I read everywhere about many active and committed sources asking for more sMerits allowance, while many other sources were "dormant" and not giving merits away, of feeling that as a chore.
Probably Theymos wanted to fix that.
Wondering if there is a new "methodology" to determine new Merit Source allocation (some kind of bakward looking average), and consequently determine if a Merit Source is still a valid one (and hence if new are needed), or it was just a "reaction" to what apparently was an extemporaneous "imbalance".

The PM had the word "automatically" in it, whatever that means. It could be an automatic scheduled process, or perhaps more likely it's an automatic adjustment that he can run manually once every few months. The adjustment seems to target a certain value, which appears to be 20k-22k total source merits. Inactive sources are removed, and the remaining ones get an adjustment based proportionally on how many sMerits they sent in the recent months.

The bottom line is - send all your sMerits out every month. That has always been the goal but now there is an added incentive (or disincentive if you're sick of sourcing).

Frequently, theymos comes up with quasi-genius solutions, and surely no solution is perfect, and even this whole merit system could be criticized for being more proof of stake rather than proof of work, and other criticisms of centralizing too much trust into few individuals... hahahahaha

Anywhoo..... theymos's announcement from yesterday was likely a surprise for many members, but yeah, if they had not been giving out many merits for the past 6 months, and could NOT at least average the dishing out of a paltry 10 merits per month, they were removed as a merit source, and in that regard, theymos employed a largely objective algorithm to remove those who were not playing game with this merit system.

In that regard, actions speak louder than words, and even some members who had been assigned as merit sources might not have been so bothered by their assignment as a merit source as to ask for their removal, but their non-use ended up speaking for around 30 of them.

Of course, not every member is good at appreciating the contributions of other members by spending time to give merits, but that does not make them either a bad member or even a non-contributory member.  I won't name any names, but there are some members who are awesome contributors to the forum, but they might not be very good at giving merits and they also might get shit on a lot from other members, but the forum would not even be close to what it is today, with the many quality contributors and even quality incentives to post good content without some of the contributions of some members who kind of suck as a merit source.

Of course, we are never really going to get rid of troll shills, but some members are very helpful at identifying, or flagging troll/shills in order that more innocent members might take those members with a grain of salt.  At the same time, there are some members who might be nice and innocent and even real good people who are just looking to be scammed.  For some reason they cannot help themselves, and there is ONLY so much that any forum can do in order to protect those kinds of members from theirselves.

In other words, some members have to learn by getting scammed, and even some of those members might not ever learned and keep getting into scam after scam after scam.  It takes all kinds of peeps to make the world go round, and surely it would be boring if the world did not have a variety of intelligence, strategies and experiments, and surely the free markets would not function as well either if everyone had the same opinions about how to value assets and/or strategies in regards to profiting from the present/future value of such assets (whether we are referring to bitcoin, crypto assets or even non-crypto assets, and even the errors that people might make in assessing and acting on their own personal financial/psychological situation(s)).

I understood the concept of "automatically" as a one-time running of an algorithm that theymos had created (or he could have had someone else create it).

Whether theymos chooses to systematically run that same algorithm or a some similar algorithm in the future would be completely discretionary on his part.  To me, theymos seems to be a kind of "wait and see" kind of guy who would not necessarily want to lock himself into running something so disruptive as this on a regular basis (or in a Turing complete kind of way... hahahha... get rid of all the humans, even himself), and for me, the use of the term "automatically" does not imply with any kind of conviction that theymos is planning to run that same algorithm beyond this one time adjustment that he had decided was reasonable/prudent to run at this particular time.

No, I'm not a merit source, I actually manage to have enough earned merit to be able to distribute them almost without interruption, of course when I'm not that active there were a few times I ran out of smerit for week or two but again, all it's up to how active you are on the forum.
Regarding the Merit Source application, if I run out complete out of sMerit then I'll probably apply for one, if they don't implement the Report to Merit source button (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5164223.msg52644413#msg52644413) before that.

Congrats.
What's the policy for disclosing such informations?
Usually MS have been quite retinent disclosing their allowance, I only heard about vague indications when asked, or describing only percentage change referencing to theymos doing some allowance review.
Asking for a friend.

Maybe I shouldn't have posted the montly allocation even though Alex_sr have stated it in his post, I don't want to start fights between the sources and theymos. Maybe that's why everyone was keeping quiet about it. I think I should keep it that way and remove the amount of smerit.
Sorry guys.

@bitmover, @fillippone, @Alex_sr,
Please remove the stated smerit amount from your posts,.
We already have enough drama, we do not need more.

All this information is public iasenko
Just look here and you will see who has more sMerits to give as a source, and who are the sources:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsend

Even if theymos removed those links, there would still be users who like to deal with data, statistics and whatsover and would generate this data and post here.

Edit: I understand your worries about the drama, but I think there won't be much drama.

You can't be 100% sure even if you have all the stats. First you don't know if the users are emptying their source merit or sending earned merit as well. You don't know how much merit is left after those 30 days. You can't get the clear picture, you can only assume, which assumption will be probably close to the reality but still... I don't want to make people feel bad about something I stated in my posts... #spreadlove

Merit sources are free to reveal their source amounts, though I think it may be a bit unwise. While it will eventually become obvious roughly what the source amounts are from the stats, there's a huge difference between showing up in a "list of probable merit sources" and having a quote out there of you basically saying "I'm a merit source, come beg me for merit, complain about every merit I send, and accuse me of being part of the anti-X/pro-Y conspiracy."

Is it kinda pointless to apply for such "position"?If you have sMerit, just spend it on some HQ posts.

Nothing pointless to it. If there were no Merit Sources, the halving (2 received Merits generate 1 sMerit) would eventually lead to there being no sMerits to hand out (at least for the core engine of the Merit System). Applicants are volunteers that allow the system to keep running, and not lead to a stall due to what I mentioned first.

The basic deflation scheme of merits (halve each distribution) is only one of reasons for potential stall.
The changes of activity or inactivity of users is another reason. Ones can earn lots of merits and have lots of smerits to send but what if that user turn into inactive (abandon the forum, inactively for long period, months or years; or ends with death). Merit pool will naturally dry out without merit sources.

Merit sources serve another role. They play as source of merits for good posters, not all users. Theymos does not want to do a second merit airdrop to all users, including many shitposters.

I think, active local sections deserve more sources. More sources are needed to make more objective judgments. We think that the number of smerit allocated to the Turkish section is very small. There should be more choice among active members. In this way, we get away from being subjective. Objective distribution becomes.

I can volunteer for that (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5183702.0).
In addition, the Turkish section has many valuable and active  members. They deserve to be the Merit Source. They may be reluctant to apply. They're too modest.:

I've had very few people beg for Merit, and I've made it clear I'm a source for more than a year and a half now. The funny ones also ask if they can buy my account :D
Accusations aren't really a problem either, I've seen only a few occasions in which someone questioned the Merit I sent, and although I know I don't have to explain myself, I don't mind doing so either.

You know  had considered the 10 year art contest to serve as a kind of merit airdrop for artist wannabes.  Did not really matter too much even if you had good art, as long as you showed some decent efforts, then you received merits in that contest.  Furthermore, I am not sure if the reallocation of active merit sources by 175% during mid-November was a quasi-genius move, but such reallocation (largely an increase of sm for the most active of merit sources) surely allowed some merit sources to splurge a bit in their own sending out of smerits, including splurging in such 10-year art contest to be received by those therein active members willing to put some efforts into making a submission within that thread.

If I may appoint someone on the local Indonesian board who might be able to become a Source of Merit, I will appoint roycilik (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1051955) he is active every day.
Since there is a Merit source member from Indonesia who has been inactive for a long time pandukelana2712 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1304130) maybe he can switch his position to roycilik (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1051955)

Because it is unfortunate that someone who is a source of Merit but does not do his job properly.

This is a good suggestion but I think roycilik should approve it first, because some people does not really want to be a merit sources. In case he wants to become a merit source then he has to follow the same procedure as everyone else, make list with 10 good posts, deserving more merit.
I had some communication with roycilik and I will support his application if he takes this decision :)

Perhaps instead of candidates nominating themselves, we should have candidates who are nominated by others and also exhibit the capacity to be impartial when dispensing those merits.

Then again, we probably wouldn't have *any* merit sources if we had to wait that long such is the flawed system we currently have in place.

This basically the test of the will on how these candidates are really willing to voluntarily distribute merits to those who are deserving. IMO, if we nominate merit sources and these sources aren't really dedicated to help the forum group, them, becoming merit source will not be effective enough for the forum.

Thus, self nomination of the members who are truly passionate and dedicated to distribute merit is quite better. In addition, the other members could also provide their insights, supports to whoever will try to apply for becoming a merit source.

I've seen numerous threads debunking merit sources dishing upwards of fifty merits in one go.

When was the last time you saw a thread (or even a single post) saying a merit source got it right?

The task is voluntary mate. What if that someone you nominated hasnt up for the job? So I think its better to stay with the same method of self nomination and application..

I kinda like the idea but there are some lapses too like what @Debonaire217 mentioned.

Thus, self nomination of the members who are truly passionate and dedicated to distribute merit is quite better.
Agree with this. A voluntary task is way more effective and we can see his determination to do so. Plus Theymos will pick him up to see if his really qualified.

When was the last time you saw a thread (or even a single post) saying a merit source got it right?

No one will open thread just to say "thank you" but of course if you do something others don't like or accept, then you get all the hell over your head. Anyway, we should keep it that way as it is.
If you show a desire to be a merit source and bear all the responsibilities, others can support your application.
If you thinks someone is eligible for a merit source, then just PM him with a question if he wants to become one. It's very easy :)

Merit source isn't a job, it's voluntary action.
more precisely is to assume responsibility as @iasenko said, if that responsibility is not carried out as it should then what is the point of being a source of Merit.

because in my opinion the purpose of being made a source of merit is just to distribute it well.

But it's not realistic to expect volunteer to do their "responsibility" for long time. Some people might leave because they're no longer interested or have more important things to do..
That's probably one of the reasons why theymos looks for "somewhat established members": they're not likely to quickly disappear.

Another reminder for theymos.
If i am chosen to be a merit source, here is my merit policy
Depending on the monthly allocation i would send 1-2 merit to regular good post, will double the amount for exclusive posts with a lot of effort and valuable content.
If by the end of the month i stil have some source merit left will dump it to those who are generally good user with lack of some merit to rank up. Most of the time those are people who are active in not so popular sections but have helped a lot of people.
One example is Mattthev (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=986862). He really deserves to rank up. I have made lists with users like him before, I'll keep doing them.

I haven't read through the list of other applicants (no offence to anyone applying).

From the questions I've already asked Alani123 I like the answers he's given - this is the kind of attitude I'd like to see not just in new merit font applicants, but to put to the current merit fonts to either lift their game, or step aside and let someone with Alani123's overview of the forum take charge.

I would however like to transfer 50 source sMerits per month to LoyceMobile (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1903546). I now often notify myself from Mobile to Merit a topic, so making LoyceMobile a Merit source would be convenient.

It's very confusing really.

Don't people already give your alt merits?  How would you exclude your alt from any ranking systems that utilised merit count in their keeping score of users' activities?  I seem to recall also that you were at one point keeping track of the alts merits for when the alt is/was about to level up.  If your alt is showered with merits wouldn't that alt be able to participate in signature campaigns at higher levels?  You would also be able to ask more for the alts' signature space if the merits accelerated you ascension to legendary.

Very confusing indeed.

No, not really, the last one (vycl87) merited his own application from alt account and self vouched (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5252524.msg54541674#msg54541674). Account shouldn't be in that list, but I guess you are maintaining list of all users who applied.

I don't know, merit source who is gaming system in every possible way shouldn't be source, but that's my opinion.

Did an update on the list with a note that the account is under investigation, this will give me a time to read about those connected accounts. BTW I haven't seen any comment from vycl87 on the case (i might missed something tho). He should at least try to defend/explain what is going on. This sole action of silence (if there is not replay yet)  is weird.
Anyway, as you said the list I want to be just a list of application, no matter the reputation of the applicant. I have ~wolwoo but I still keep his application on that list.

Bearded:  You may want to consider just clarifying OP to say that your creation / maintenance of this thread/list is not meant to either support or oppose the listed applications, and that if any member wants to support or oppose such applicants, they can provide links to other threads in this thread that support or oppose such applications, but that this thread is not intended for discussing the endorsement or opposition of such applicants... and that might clarify without you having to take any position beyond merely listing applicants while also allowing members to link their support or opposition threads, if any.

And that it's an "Unofficial" or "informal" list of "expressions of interest" given that the process of "applying" doesn't seem to have its own thread where there is an announcement made and the "applicants" then make their cases in the one thread.

That's true.  Theymos had kind of left it up to each applicant to create his/her own thread on the topic, and possibly it could have been easier to follow in a single thread... which could be part of what Bearded had been attempting to achieve with this thread.

Thank you guys for responding, I updated the OP with a disclaimer note and added the last merit source application.
Hope now it's clear that his is only a list of applicants.

7      wolwoo (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1003533)      Application (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5205906.0)      30-Nov-19

You can remove this application from the list, as wolwoo ceased trying (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5205906.msg54573780#msg54573780) to become a merit source.

Quote
I give up my application from the source of Merit at my own will.

Thank you guys for the information, I'll removed the closed one and I will add the new one tomorrow.
The list is getting longer but we haven't heard anything from theymos yet. Now there are more than six months since the last update.

7 months now...

I've really thought someone has opened up a new thread about this, LoL. Didn't know it was just you iasenko. Changed Name. Though how much longer do you think we still need to wait before a few changes on MSs?

Things changed but I'm still tje same.
Now I have no clue how long we need to wait. Gmaxwell mentioned something about six months or so but now since we already crossed half a year we might need to just bump this until themos decides that it's time.
We wait...

Is there any badge for merit sources, or some plans to add this in future?
It would be good to know them and recognise them easy all if Theymos plans to expand and add more decentralization to merit distribution.

No, there's no badge for merit sources, and there's probably no plan to add this;
there's a huge difference between showing up in a "list of probable merit sources" and having a quote out there of you basically saying "I'm a merit source, come beg me for merit, complain about every merit I send, and accuse me of being part of the anti-X/pro-Y conspiracy."

The list of merit sources is also not made public, it's a voluntary position and there's no need to expose them to scrutiny, anyone paying attention would likely know who they are eventually, but the spammers are not really doing that.

I agree with everything you said, Upgrade00, and I will elaborate by mentioning that theymos had specifically announced that it was not his intention to announce merit sources because he did not want to encourage merit begging (or excessive merit begging, if there is a difference?).

But, surely one of the better threads on the topic of attempting to suss out who may or may not be a merit source (to the extent that they have not admitted being a merit source) has been maintained by Coin-1 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1133335) through the past couple of years.  It is called:

[TOP-200] The most generous users giving merits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4523027.0)

Maybe the name of the thread is not exactly literally accurate, but it is still an interesting thread that largely seems to assign a creative approach and a convincing degree of confidence to which members are considered to be or are not merit sources.  By the way, Coin-1 has been doing a great service to the forum to provide this information, even while source members still can attempt to maintain some plausible deniability, unless some of the source members have actually admitted to their source status (but still, plausible deniability in terms of any time that source status could be removed)...

By the way, one of my own funny stories is that when merit source status was first announced, I was confused by the whole thing, and I had read theymos's assertion that he was not going to announce who were the merit source, and asserted that members will likely figure it out with the passage of time, but then a few posts later, he was finger pointing at me, even though I have never really completely admitted to it, except for just proclaiming that I know things about my practices in regards to smerits, and maybe some other quasi-incriminating but attempting to be somewhat vague admissions.    :D :D :D :D

Seems like reasonable... But if we're going to count it by then it should be 3mos or so, though I just hope we really can see changes by this time especially the ones who're asking for another increase just like me.

Just been saving so I won't run out again...

I was expecting something  to happen around Jun 14 too. I mean excatly six months. Now, we all know how theymos loves to delegate tedious duties to algorithms, but actually the strict 6 months deadline might have been a little bit too much: everyone (or many of us) were expecting a revision around that time, so someone could have "played" with merits habits to present himself ready for that appointment. I guess he might value a little bit of "randomness" or "human touch" dealing with such delicate aspects.

I'm fine waiting, anyway I have so much to do this summer so the time spent on the forum is not that much anymore.
From September til New year's eve I'll be home on a leave so maybe I'll have some more time then, if the house project is over by then. As i said I can wait, theymos is a great guy so whenever he decides to take some steps I'll be there to help :)

Well, bump.

Nexp bump will be for Christmas and then for Ester... things are going in that direction :D

I think Epochtalk will be implemented before we get a merit rise, or at least some people becoming sources  ::)

P.S. Please someone to send 2 merit to this guy, I hate seeing people missing 2 merit to rank up to Hero ... fiulpro (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=712353). Thanks :)

I think we can identify some of them as merit source because they are always active in giving merits and not only that they are not giving just 1 merit per post if they think that is worth it. It seldom give 1 merit for those post they going to give merit. I see DdmrDdmr, cabalism13, suchmoon, dbshk and more users had been into this way of giving merit and we can say that they could be a merit source. Anyway, more merit source will be good for us the low rank users to rank up into the next position. We will be gladly to be gone that far knowing that many users now striving to earn merits but sad to say some get bullied. sighs!

Do you, jademaxsuy, know about Coin-1's thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4523027.0) that speculates (with a seemingly decent amount of confidence based on algorithmic formulas) regarding which forum members are likely to be merit sources based on how many smerits they are giving out that likely exceeds both how much they were airdropped on 1/24/18 and how much smerits they would have generated based on smerits received?

Sure, we can see that the thread is called "[TOP-200] The most generous users giving merits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4523027.0)" but we need not get mislead or distracted in regards to the name of the thread in order to understand and appreciate that such thread is largely attempting to identify and to highlight on a rolling basis which forum members are suspected to be merit sources, as Coin-1 explains in the OP and within other parts of the thread.

Bumping this one as it tents to drawn too often in oblivion. I'm not sure if theymos is interested in adding more sources at all or just we are not good enough to be sources.. There should be a reason but all we get is silence.

New application added.

Another bump.
