1001  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Trading then switching currencies on: August 05, 2022, 07:22:03 PM
It depends on what asset you want to keep/accumulate as to whether you convert profits back to fiat or keep them in crypto.

Converting profits into fiat/stablecoins can be a good idea to prevent you from risking too much and cashing in your profits while learning to trade (and can also pay higher interest with on the exchange or via an external area such as defi).
1002  Other / Meta / Re: How to post from drafts ? on: August 05, 2022, 07:17:50 PM
I don't think there's a way to post drafts directly from the drafts page.

There are probably a few reasons I can think of for this but I'm not sure if there's anything else: 1. To discourage spam/posting the same post multiple times 2. To encourage writing the start of topics this way but not actual responses (and you might end up posting a response that is similar to one that has been posted before or that's out of context of the new discussion).
1003  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Chainlink trademark infringement - Freechainlink.io on: August 04, 2022, 11:24:49 PM
They want you to stop using the word "smartcontract" - there's a live (but likely unenforceable trademark) here: https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4809:kjt3d4.2.1

Also from what I can gather you'd have to be:
1. Located in the US for this to be enforced
2. Be conducting a similar type of business to what the trademark owner is doing (and I don't think that's been established anywhere what they're doing or what the issue is).

In a lot of countries, with trademarks, you normally have to prove people have misrepresented the company by using it and have caused them losses as a result but I'm not sure this is the case in the US.

Being funnily pedantic, have you written that term without a space on your website (only look if it's a quick search)?
1004  Other / Meta / Re: Yet another "bitcointalk needs" topic on: August 04, 2022, 11:03:54 PM
but lately I've noticed that at least this topic got derailed pretty bad and I guess that some "kicks" here and there would be useful.

... or would somebody just take the patience and report a bunch of posts? Would be that enough?

I'm not sure if this would take a rule change or not to try to get rid of those posts. Because it's highlighted in this case they might be removed but if they're reported normally i don't think mods would do anything since the topic is locked.

It'd be worth a mod splitting the topic at the point it was derailed and just trashing the bit after the split imo (but to also do this to new topics after a mod has seen it).
1005  Other / Meta / Re: How important are you on this forum? on: August 04, 2022, 10:53:56 PM
So anyway, how important am I to bitcointalk?

"am" feels an odd thing to say exclusively, everything I've read here is something someone has written in the past (sometimes close to the past but other times a few years after - and based on the merit I've received before, others have read past/years ago versions of me every so often too).

On to the topic of this thread, I think a lot of people underestimate how valued they are generally and some don't want people to know - there's a lot to this forum that's more enigmatic than it might seem too...

Additionally, the good thing about this forum is there's a record of it (on multiple sites) - if someone important in any way leaves, the forum would be able to adapt to it, most people in the tech boards are able to learn from each other and it's easier when people explain things directly to you but not normally necessary.
1006  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to delete account? on: August 04, 2022, 10:33:07 PM
You can freely make multiple accounts here so I don't see the reason for deleting an account (it's probably one of the main reasons why it's not an option).
1007  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Saylor steps down as Microstrategy CEO on: August 04, 2022, 03:47:37 AM
He is still at the helm of his company, maybe he will just focus more on investing on bitcoin. And I doubt that he is stepping down as CEO because he is losing billions, for sure we all know that we are in the bear market and so everyone's investment is on the negative.

The thing about him stepping down after making a billion dollar loss sounds like a move more strategic for investors (maybe Saylor picked such an ambiguous position for himself to try to stay away from being linked to any new strategy the company comes up with under it's new figurehead). You're no longer investing in a company with a ceo that's made a 1bn loss, you're investing in one that can change leadership and may be run better as a result.

This news initially sounded bearish to me and I still can't decide if it is or not. I'd guess they could be taking a step back to maybe take a more intensive look at btc and see how the company could've better adapted to relieving its debts.

1008  Economy / Economics / Re: Crude Oil drops below $100 on: August 03, 2022, 11:51:06 PM
we have also subsidized gasoline, there are about 120 Liters per month we can adquire at a very cheap price, almost symbolic

Are you rationed to the 120 litres or is that just what you can get for the discounted rate there?

but it is still significantly expensive compared to where it was just over a year ago.
That's right.

I'm happy to see it rolled back but still we need to get back from where it was before or even close at it even with a gain. With my calculations, we're still near half from where it is right now and from where it was a year ago.

How far would you expect it to fall though? I doubt we'll ever be back down to pandemic levels, somewhere around £1.20/€1.4/$1.4-£1.4/$1.7/€1.7 per litre would be around where I'd expect it to stabilise if there is enough supply and a dip in demand (due to the prices being high and also maybe less travelling after the summer - for the northern hemisphere at least).
1009  Economy / Economics / Re: Congress' push to regulate Big Tech is fizzling out on: August 03, 2022, 11:37:24 PM
If other payment processors are able to make transactions through apple and Google (even if it's just the play store/appstore) it's possible some of those purchases could be done directly with bitcoin for a few payment processors (if revolut or PayPal allow direct transfers and one of them is offered as alternative payment means).

Also I guess this means they're running out of/envisaging using a lot of time to try to convince senators on the same sex marriage bills to try to pass ones for big tech.

I'm surprised more effort hasn't been put into trying to split up the largest of the tech firms that currently exist too (if Microsoft moved to Canada, I don't think they'd be able to stay whole, Disney have been blocked by the EU on acquiring certain companies there in the past from what I remember - from a few years ago).
1010  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Centralized Exchange And Decentralized Exchange on: August 03, 2022, 07:07:59 PM
Dexes are generally preferred for information about a project because they're more transparent and trackable (there have been allegations some centralised exchanges manipulate information on the volumes of coins traded).

Dexes have higher trading fees thougb when compared with cexes so it's best to list on as many places as possible (especially if it's developed to be used on ethereum).
1011  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Can Decentralization Exist Without Blockchain? on: August 03, 2022, 06:43:42 PM
Systems can be decentralised without blockchain (the lighting network might be a good example of this).

I think if they can get enough voters than PoS systems can work well, if they limit it down too much then it'll start to work much less effectively, be less trustworthy/secure and more prone to attacks.
1012  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do whales keep their massive amounts of bitcoin? on: August 03, 2022, 06:28:37 PM
As said above, for large amounts whales and large companies would generally use airgapped devices now (and some may still have cold wallets t if they're scared of moving their funds to an online machine but those aren't considered very safe anymore). It's possible to also use hardware wallets on an airgapped machine but I'm not sure if this is done much (it may be an extra layer of protection in case files unsigned transactions are transferred via removable storage from the online device to the offline one).
1013  Economy / Economics / Re: Another topic about Bitcoin and inflation: show me if I'm wrong on: August 03, 2022, 06:10:53 PM
The function of a safe-haven asset is to withstand a crisis without losing value. Did Bitcoin survive? Not really. In fact, you may notice that the market is increasingly correlated to traditional finance (the result of considering Bitcoin as an investment instrument).
It's quite a weird market though because bonds (including just government bonds) didn't survive well either.

Most investors now are looking to invest in global infrastructure that can drive their own increases market share/dominance (I don't know if we can include bitcoin in that, perhaps, but a lot of companies survived much better than what would be expected).

Whereas a store of value must be able to maintain its purchasing power over time. Where is the purchasing power protection for people who invested all their savings when the price was 60k, 50k, 40k, 30k?
Inflation is the role of central banks to regulate/limit/brake it. How do you want it to be the same with Bitcoin?

There are times that are both happy and sad in this market as there are points where, if everyone bought a coin before then and held it, they'd be in profit now - it's sad personal circumstance and other things can force people to sell at a loss but you can't backup the price.

Most investments demand a few years in the market. European stocks used to face 3 years of bear times, 3 years of stagnation and 3 years of growth (on average) - you might've needed to be in the market for 7 years to have made a good profit on your investment. A lot of etfs for bitcoin normally suggest a minimum term of 4 years before their pessimistic estimates become positive (not sure if this is the one neurotic fish is quoting, I saw it on a factsheet from a Swedish bitcoin etf manager - it was an interesting read).

Edit: their recommended investment period was updated to 5 years.
1014  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC Sentiment Poll for August on: August 03, 2022, 05:53:10 PM
I don't think $25k was very strong support when we were falling (especially compared with $27-$30k). I'd've expected more resistance already getting up to $24k than we've already seen and I think we'll see quite a lot after $27k but perhaps not much until then (unless we fall back to another support).
1015  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How do you assess the value of Bitcoin? on: August 03, 2022, 05:42:18 PM
It's a lot less bothersome to dca or buy lump sums at random times.

If you're aiming to buy at a price it's normally best to invest in something else and wait for that price to be reached (but if it doesn't make the news you either have to keep checking the price every few days or have an alert set up - and then hope the alert works).

Buying dips for a lot of markets (typically stocks - definitely not forex) works better than dcaing but it can be a lot more costly too (time wise) and I don't think the gain is enough to make it worthwhile (especially in tech/crypto markets).
1016  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What will happen to BTC if China attack on Taiwan? on: August 03, 2022, 04:15:08 PM
I thought bitcoin started dropping in October and Russia started invading Ukraine at the end of February? How have you made that conclusion?

If the US stock market and bitcoin continue to correlate then what happens to both with depend on whether the US gets involved or not, if the US does (as may be likely if they think it's possible to stymy an invasion) then both might drop due to the added turmoil. If other asian countries or Taiwan are able to deter an invasion on their own (they are an island and it is their land, they may have complex plans to prevent being invaded) then we might see more positive effects on both bitcoins and stocks valuations.

1017  Other / Meta / Re: How About A Com. Voting System Sub/child board ~ An Appeal To Theymos on: August 02, 2022, 08:27:18 PM
This has been suggested quite a few times before and has been quite ignored by the forum afaik.

I think one of the reasons this isn't done is because views change. Also Theymos and mods can get around to viewing all the suggestions topics and implement them - I guess this new system would be a way for users to track what's implemented/new on the forum but it's probably potentially unnecessary too (and depending on the feature might lead to spam).

It might also be something that puts too much pressure on admins, staff and mods which could be considered problematic (considering they're volunteers).
1018  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Ilya Lichtenstein didn't coinjoin? on: August 02, 2022, 03:51:53 PM
There'd be issues still with pricing how they got so much money and where they came from (if you conjoined with that much money - or even moved it around quite a bit like turning it into altcoins - you are likely still quite easy to trace).

Even in cash you're going to find companies astounded by how much is randomly there if you don't normally have much wealth/money stored in accounts (they'd've been better mixing multiple times via coin join and mixing and only cashing out small amount of funds when they needed it - but then they still wouldn't have gotten to use the majority of the funds they stole unless they found a more sophisticated technique to be able to withdraw it.
1019  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: a month of bot trading on: August 02, 2022, 03:31:57 PM
I am thinking of using RSI or at least test to see if it helps remove trades in flat markets.
I am fairly happy with my one month stats but do want to improve them.

If it's easy enough to backtest you might be able to find indicators that represent volatility and volume too (maybe macd does this to an extent). A higher volume will probably lead on to higher volatility later on (if not already present) but may also change its direction.
1020  Economy / Speculation / Re: Daily vs Weekly chart: Bear market comparisons on: August 02, 2022, 03:17:40 PM
Put of curiosity is there a reason you're comparing this to 2019/2015 and not 2018/2014 (the immediate year after the new aths/drops last time)?

It feels like there's not much data to go off about this current cycle though (just from those MAs) but it'll be interesting to see how it all goes and whether we do get a weekly close above that moving average.

The 200 week MA is known to be followed in a lot of charts as quite a strong support though and I think that'll still go higher (even if price remains more stable).
