OK. This conversation overwhelmed my circuits  Grin

I am going back to the Newbie forum to look for historical threads for non-techies.

Thanks for your tries to enlighten me.
1142  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I think I was just robbed on: April 22, 2013, 01:33:46 AM
Generally all the info is contained within the wallet.dat file.

The guy here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5324.msg79436#msg79436 says only private keys are stored in the wallet.dat file: ''The wallet only contains the private keys you use to spend your coins''.

If he is right, by opening wallet.dat file, I would find many (about 100) private keys (only keys). How would I know which key opens the specific address to which the remaining 9 BTCs were send? I do realize this question may seem and probably is stupid. Just let me know and I jump into ''Newbie'' forum.

Instead just backup your wallet and then encrypt the backup using AES crypt and a strong password.

By the ''wallet'' you mean wallet.dat file or something else / something additional?

Thank you.

This website either has problem with password management or does not allow browsers with cookies disabled (I added this website to a exception list or I am proving myself to be a non-techie - so many attempts of password reset and all failed.

BTW, if the situation described by the thread originator happens to me, how do I find the hidden address in my wallet and how do I find the private key assigned to this address (using Bitcoin-Qt)?

Thanks

When you send BTC the remainder goes to a new address.

Newbie here. Let's assume I have 3 addresses and 10 bitcoins are in only one (two others are empty). Does it mean that when I send 1 BTC to a friend of mine, 9 bitcoins will be automatically sent to either of the remaining addresses of mine?

Thanks
Or to a new one you didn't even know existed in your wallet (there are many change addresses pre-computed in your wallet). Some have lost money by not understanding this concept and only having backups of the addresses they knew about. The way these change addresses were pre-computed was changed in bitcoinqt to make this less of a problem.

Geee, it will take a lot of time before I understand even basic peculiarities of Bitcoin-Qt. There are many guidelines like backing up wallets, etc, but without first understanding the background mechanics / logic behind these guidelines, a non-tech poor English speaking newbie like myself can potentially get into troubles.

Is there an easy-to-understand tutorial of all / some of these intricacies?

Thank you.

1146  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox AML/KYC Process Explained on: April 21, 2013, 06:49:24 AM
A kind soul please advise. I want to get my account at Mt.gox funded very quickly ($5k). Which procedure is faster according to your experience.

1. EUR funding by SEPA (verification process at Mt.gox + money transfer + crediting the account)

I live in Europe and decided to use SEPA transfer to fund my account at Mt.gox (EUR sent to Mt.gox's account in Poland). I am waiting in a queue for verification (I uploaded the ID + utility bill images). I am 25k in the line, which means - if successful - I will be verified in two weeks time. It will take at least 1 day to make the transfer and 6 days for Mt.gox to put that money in my account (verified by a Polish guy who made an intrabank payment from BZ WBK to BZ WBK). The whole procedure will take 21 days. This is very long.

2. USD funding by International Wire Transfer ( money transfer + crediting the account + check process at Mt.gox)

Mt.gox write on their website in regard to International Wire Transfers (USD sent to Mt.gox's account in Japan): ''First-timer depositors are requested to upload their copy of the official ID to facilitate this process.'' - I already uploaded the image of the official ID. Further Mt.gox write ''International wire transfers usually take 2-5 business days to reach us. All deposits are subject to AML check (check is not verification!) due to more stringent AML requirements and this process may take up to 24 hours after the funds have reached us.''

Am I correct to assume that the procedure of funding the account by International Wire Transfer takes only 6 days (5 days for the money to reach mt.gox and 1 day due to AML)?

Please advise.

Thanks

I live in Canada ...

I know this is a very broad topic but the world has never operated under a system like this before and i'm wondering who will serve as the centralized government under a decentralized monetary system?

Here are answers to your questions by someone who lives in Canada.

1148  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: P2P Exchange for bitcoin on: April 19, 2013, 10:44:09 PM

3 Exchanges:
a) One and only one exchange
b) Many independent virtual exchanges running in the system

I can think of one positive aspect of having one and only one exchange, namely the quality and consistency of the data feed (used to plot bars and perform technical analysis).

When there is one exchange, for a particular instrument e.g. CME for S&P 500 this exchange distributes its data to companies like Trading Technology and IQ. Every end user buying data from these distribution companies can be 99% sure that the data plotted on his monitor are the same as data plotted on monitors of other traders - this is good.

Now try the same in forex ... tens of brokers for EUR USD, each broker reports different prices and different volumes (and different spreads). Gosh - it is a nightmare.
1149  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Mt.Gox Verification Speculation on: April 19, 2013, 08:00:12 PM
My estimation is 1.8k per day.

Do you perhaps know if it is allowed to send funds prior to the verification? E.g. you see yourself 500th in the queue and  you send the money before the positive clearance?
1150  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How would you design the ultimate exchange? on: April 19, 2013, 12:32:47 AM
1. There should be easy available connectivity offered by the exchange to the clients (a trading gateway + data feed: both historical and real-time).

2. The exchange should offer a basic charting&trading package for free (like MT4 or MT5 - something like this).

3. The exchange should make a deal with high-end frontend developers (if you know futures and forex markets you know which ones they are) and also avail such frontends to clients.

Ile będzie szedł przelew do Japonii?

In this case, only the wallet.dat needs to be in the TrueCrypt

Here https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet#Windows it says ''Use the third-party disk image encryption program of your choice to create and mount an encrypted disk image of at least 5GB in size. This procedure stores the entire block chain database with the wallet.dat file so the required size of the encrypted disk image required may grow in the future.''

1. It is my understanding that the space required for wallet.dat file would be substantially smaller than 5GB, am I correct? What size would you recommend for wallet.dat only?

2. What space would you recommend for the whole of Bitcoin-Qt? Although I have been using the application for a few hours the data size is now 8GB (probably due to historical block chain data) - this would mean the info on the wiki is outdated?

Thanks
1155  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Incredibly silly questions by a newbie (regarding Bitcoin-Qt) on: April 17, 2013, 11:24:34 PM

You can use the "importprivkey" command to add your address to a fresh installation. You can also just put your backup wallet.dat into a new installation.

Fantastic, thank you very much.
1156  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Incredibly silly questions by a newbie (regarding Bitcoin-Qt) on: April 17, 2013, 11:12:13 PM
I have another silly questions based on a hypothetical situation

1. I have a print-out of my address and a print-out of the corresponding private key in my hand.

2. I also have a USB stick with a wallet.dat file in my pocket (encrypted).

3. I loose my current computer with Bitcoin-Qt (HDD's catastrophic failure or something).

4. I buy a new computer, and install Bitcoin-Qt on it.

Question:

Can I simply use the new Bitcoin-Qt instance on a new computer and simply type in the old address and the old private key from the print-outs?

or

Must I use the old wallet.dat file (swap the wallet.dat in the directory of the new Bitcoin-Qt)?

Thanks
1157  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Incredibly silly questions by a newbie (regarding Bitcoin-Qt) on: April 17, 2013, 10:19:14 PM

I wrote ''dumpprivkey 1DF............(my adress here)...................'' and I got this message in Console ''Private key for address 1DF...............(my adress here).................. is not known (code -4)''

what should I do about this?

Thanks

My bad. I should've used a ''walletpassphrase'' command first because my wallet was already encrypted.

Thanks Dr WHO for your help  Grin
1158  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Incredibly silly questions by a newbie (regarding Bitcoin-Qt) on: April 17, 2013, 09:16:07 PM

2. should the whole Bitcoin-Qt application be placed in an TrueCrypt encrypted drive or just the wallet.dat file should be placed in this encrypted drive?

That depends on what you are trying to accomplish.  Are you trying to hide the fact that you are running a bitcoin wallet, or are you just trying to hide your bitcoin addresses?

I only want to hide the addresses.

Thanks

- snip -
1. where I can find the private key? I found the 34 character address (for receiving the money), but can't find the private key corresponding with this address (for sending the money).
- snip -

Under the "Help" menu, choose "Debug Window".

Then choose "Console".

Type:

Code:
dumpprivkey 1yourBitCoinAddressHere
[/quote]

Where "1yourBitCoinAddressHere" is the 34 character bitcoin address from your wallet that for which you want the Private Key.

Thank you so much. This is the method of obtaining the private key I wanted Smiley

I wrote ''dumpprivkey 1DF............(my adress here)...................'' and I got this message in Console ''Private key for address 1DF...............(my adress here).................. is not known (code -4)''

what should I do about this?
