The Stock Market Crash of 2008

Rock Bottom

In September of 2008, the American economy was sent reeling. The New York Stock Exchange plummeted on numerous occasions. The stock market fell 345 points in one day on September 5th. By the end of the month, the stock market had lost 20% of its entire value.
The financial and economic crash of 2008, the worst in over 75 years, and was a major geopolitical setback for the United States and Europe. This damage has put the American model of free-market capitalism under a cloud .

Over a month ago, about 250 girls were kidnapped from a Nigerian school and taken to a remote area, all in the name of Islam. Their stance is that western education should not be allowed. Since then videos have been released and one showing the killing of a woman.

What are thoughts on Boko Haram?
Did you know that before the 250 girls were kidnapped, about 25 young boys were killed by having their throats slit? That is how dangerous this militant group is. The Nigerian govt has not been as proactive as the world expected them to.
However, Boko Haram is a radical Islamic group and as such, the religion itself cannot be blamed.
By the way, before a country rushes to the aid of another country, they first ask themselves how will it serve them? It is sad but true. Countries don’t just simply help other countries out of the goodness of their hearts. They often have vested interests in that country for example oil, investments etc..
Yes you are right.. None of the countries step up to help without any self interests.. Moreover, when the concerned country is one like Nigeria, plagued by black, people just tend to ignore and move on.. Hypoctite modern people of this world!!
1243  Other / Off-topic / Re: The Real Reason You're Circumcised on: June 06, 2014, 03:05:41 PM
I don't see why we need to make circumcised guys feel bad like this. Maybe we should start to try to weed the practice out of society (as it is kind of odd and unnecessary unless you have religious beliefs about it), but every guy, whether circumcised or not, is normal - just different.
1244  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Boko Haram and their reign of terror on: June 06, 2014, 02:42:19 PM
Is Boko Haram a mobile group? How do they feed such a large amount of people? Or do they have a home base? And if they do have a home base, why hasn't it been raided yet?
Boko Haram is an Islamic sect that believes politics in northern Nigeria has been seized by a group of corrupt, false Muslims. It wants to wage a war against them, and the Federal Republic of Nigeria generally, to create a “pure” Islamic state ruled by sharia law.

I thought that I heard on the news that the girls were rescued already. Did that not happen?
No, the girls weren't released,a few managed to escaped but 200 girls are still under their custody !

I'm having a cig, dog goes ballistic.

So I was able to scramble in the house quickly to get the camera.

Is this a peacock?

I live in indiana, if this is a peacock, I had no idea they are wild here. Maybe a turkey?

I wish i was that lucky to have peacock(male) in my yard .
Sometimes I find it hard to believe how beautiful these birds are with those huge, colorful feathers, looks like he's wearing an extravagant dress or something. Pretty cool.

I see that a lot of people are recommending gold investments. So how shall I go about it? Should I buy gold through an online broker? Or someone locally? Will it be faster if I choose to invest online rather than having to go through a bank broker?  And will it save me middlemen fees?
Firstly, you need to choose the form of gold you would like to invest in..
Physical gold, which is nothing but jewelry,
Gold bar and coins
ETF
Gold futures
Gold Mutual funds..

And yes, you can go through bank broker...

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond was awesome and definitely worth checking out.

Adventure capitalist by Jim Roger.

Very interesting to see the Jim Rogers perspective of the world. Learned plenty about the world and little about invest ing. Just the right mix. I look forward to reading more of his books.

You can also try "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine" by Michael Lewis is really a good business economy book. This is the no 1 New York Times bestseller.
This is the first book I've read by Michael Lewis, and I hope to read his other work. The book was incredibly informative and fast paced, but also managed to be highly entertaining. I laughed out loud at parts, became darkly angry during other parts, and by the end felt quite informed about elements of the housing collapse. I highly recommend this book
Like all Michael Lewis books, it offers an interesting perspective on a complex topic in an artful way. However, it gets repetitive at certain points and drags on at times. If you're not a financial professional, you'll be completely lost by the subject matter. Even if you are a financial professional, you'll find yourself lost at times. All in all, if your looking for a read that does a great job of explaining the subprime mortgage crisis, then this book is for you.
1252  Other / Politics & Society / Re: USA is getting adversely affected by Immigrants on: June 05, 2014, 10:18:41 AM
I blame the welfare state (wrought by selfishness and political pandering) and erosion of a free market, otherwise immigrants would add value. America is destroying herself. Sorry if I don't go more in-depth on substantiating this opinion.

Can you elaborate on what you mean though by 'erosion of culture'? Culture is a dynamic idea.
By cultural erosion i  meant the systematic devaluation, sometimes leading to the deletion, of certain aspects of our culture due to foreign influences. Such influences could wipe out a people’s memory of their past; their traditional cultural practices; and their language. Above all, it can change their worldview, including their perception of reality .And here I am talking about the Mexican,Indian and Chinese influence over the native Americans and colonist traditions and language.
US was formed in 1776, they only have 238 year's worth of history compared to older civilizations like Great Britain or China. So it's not unfair to say that they should give equal chances to people who want to move to their country to seek a better life as long as they can contribute and they don't really have any 'culture' to speak of yet.
1253  Economy / Economics / Re: Investment advice? on: June 05, 2014, 10:16:58 AM
Please don't invest in  real estates.. Somehow, I feel the sector very very risky.. It is just meant for extra rich people who have scores on money in hand who can hold properties for a long period of time... I guess Forex would be a good bet than mutual funds..
On the contrary, property sector is a good, profitable and low risk investment. Think about it this way, you can lose a lot of money in Forex or the stock markets but your property will always be there.
And you can also rent it out for extra income while making a profit selling it a few years down the road!
1254  Other / Politics & Society / Re: USA is getting adversely affected by Immigrants on: June 05, 2014, 10:08:49 AM
Loads and loads of people from across the globe are immigrating to America for different purposes.. Their aims and purposes are getting fulfilled but America is actually getting destroyed..
Some adverse affects are as below :
- Americans are losing their job
- There has been an increase in crime, pollution and traffic congestion
- Erosion of culture
- Over-utilization of resources such as electricity, gas, food, etc
- Loss in form of remittance

You are free to debate, confirm on\off any of the combinations above..
You are forgetting that US is a country made up of immigrants themselves. Or as they like to call themselves, 'COLONISTS'. The original inhabitants of the land they are residing on are Native Americans who had their lands taken away from them and treated very badly by the colonists.
1255  Other / Off-topic / Re: God is Reality on: June 04, 2014, 07:00:17 PM
There are many facts that do support a god. There are many facts out there that do support a god and in particular Jesus Christ.
Also there are many sources that back up the bible and Jesus. Outside sources validate many facts the bible states. But it is your own journey. However in a matter that is considered life or death, eternal life or eternal condemnation, wouldn't u want to know all the facts. I encourage all those questioning if god is real to check out Lee Strobel and his books. Particularly a case for Christ which was written when he was an atheist.
1256  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What's wrong with eating meat? on: June 04, 2014, 06:36:11 PM
I noticed the beyond spicy vegan buffalo bites in the picture are $10.99 per pound. What a ripoff! I can buy a whole cooked chicken here for $6.00. And you said the vegan diet is cheaper  Roll Eyes

Why are they trying so hard to make their vegan dishes look like meat? They'll never have quite the same texture and flavor anyhow. That fruitarian guy is probably lying or is heavily supplementing his diet. Fruits generally aren't a good source of protein or fat.

Plus all the chemicals they put in the vegan dishesto look like meat and teast like it....they have to cheat that teaste somehow .....
1257  Other / Off-topic / Re: Who's your superhero? on: June 04, 2014, 04:28:39 PM
Batman all the way! He's the most realistic and love the fact that he's really damn intelligent and strong and the same time, his costume and storyline are also just priceless!
Second would probably be superman because i like the fact that he doesn't dress up in a fancy costume and go save the day unlike all other superhero's.
1258  Economy / Economics / Re: Solution to poverty - Socialism or Capitalism? on: June 04, 2014, 03:57:07 PM
Intelligence solves problems. Politics makes problems. Try a government without politics and you will have an intelligent government that solves problems.
Also the corrupt politicians and the greedy ones are intelligent.........

Pope Francis Is Probably the Best Politician in the World - While celebrating an open-air Mass in Bethlehem, Francis unexpectedly invited Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to the Vatican for a June meeting of prayer and dialogue. Within an hour, both had accepted. Francis’s successful overture was especially remarkable considering the failed efforts by the United States earlier this spring to get both sides to the table to begin negotiated peace talks. However, this could be the boost that Secretary of State John Kerry needed to revive this peace process, which has been largely dormant for the past four years. As you can see Pope is better at politics than US government.
He's a revolutionary pope that has rejected all the fancy customs and extravagant costumes of the papal office and has exhibited very humble attitude unlike other popes before him, even actively addressing problems faced by the church and apologizing for past church actions such as sexual abuse cases and accepting gay marriage.
This is surely a great man who is deserving of our respect, regardless of religious beliefs! (or the lack thereof)
1260  Economy / Economics / Solution to poverty - Socialism or Capitalism? on: June 04, 2014, 02:07:53 PM
Hey everyone. In today's developed world where we have glasses that can access the internet and robots that can think on their own, it is a shame that there are still people in parts of the world living under 1$ a day.
What can governments do to end poverty in their countries? Is a solution possible under capitalism? Or did Karl Marx had the right idea with his recommendation of a socialist government?
