1301  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S4 Discussion and Support Thread on: October 18, 2014, 01:29:10 PM

Speaking purely from investment terms, it's a curious phenomenon that in the history of bitcoin, you could always convert dollars into more bitcoin than any mining machine you could buy with those dollars would generate over its lifetime, yet people inevitably choose to buy bitcoin miners because of the concept of buying a "money making machine". It is the most expensive and technically challenging way to convert dollars into bitcoin. By far the most money anyone ever made off ASIC hardware are those who purchased avalon generation 1. At bitcoin prices when the avalon was first announced, there is still a chance they'd be better off just having converted their dollars into bitcoin at that time. When the avalon actually arrived they were a steal at 60GH @ 1500$=80BTC but you could not order them any more since they were always preorders (how much is 80BTC worth now?). I think bitcoin was worth less when they made their Avalon preorders so they were much more than 80BTC. They may have been the one exception and ironically the first ASIC ever so they capitalised on the diff at the time.

It's funny because for years people would happily expand/extend their hardware for reasons that had nothing to do with making money, like having the best gaming machine, or the best Mprime or setiathome or folding@home results or whatever. Yet the attraction of bitcoin mining has been that the hardware expansion you've been doing has been in the quest for return on investment. It has clouded people's judgement and brought in a different population of miners compared to the population it grew from. Somehow people lost sight of the fact that bitcoin mining moved from the former group of enthusiasts to a massive money making venture and the former group unintentionally became part of the latter group unwittingly, and then started complaining that they would never make a return on investment (which strictly speaking is incorrect, they mean they would never pay off their hardware). People got caught in the bitcoin mining wave and unintentionally converted from hobbyists to real money investors, and that's the real crime here.

As I read this I can see myself as I am sure many others can as well. Looking back when I started with buying my first 30 Bitcoins @$130 each so I could get 15 USB miners in a group buy to spending my mined coins until I had 75 of them running, then selling moving on to BFL singles selling them for the S1's and now down to 4 S'3 in the basement still mining .... It's been like catching a falling knife but I am done. Thinking of right now to sell off two of my miners and turning the last to "out to pasture" in your solo pool.
1302  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Just a quick question about Eligius on: October 17, 2014, 11:25:05 PM
Does Lukejr have anything to do with the pool?  I read that he did at one time, but doesn't anymore.  Is that correct?

The pool has its own thread. Why not ask your question there instead of starting another.

1303  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: October 17, 2014, 08:06:52 AM
I think the seller got them used before me, so I doubt it.  They mine fine at stock, but don't overclock worth crap.  I got a great deal on them, including psu's, so I'm fine with it.

Does the seller know the original purchase date and/or tracking number? You could probably determine the batch by that.

Just curious on what you paid?
1304  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: October 14, 2014, 11:49:21 AM
I'll give that a go when I get back.....I know one of the fans is certainly pushing (the opposite end to the Ethernet port)

If I find them both pushing, rather than the other one pulling air into the unit, is it as simple as reversing the connector?

Not sure if you can do that or if you need to flip the fan? I have 1 miner from batch 2 and batch 3 and two miners from batch 5 all with no problems so I am just guessing at your problem but you may hear from someone else here that had the same problem as you.
1305  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: October 14, 2014, 11:13:11 AM
Check the running temp of the miner and on the miners status page you can also check off on the config page the shut off mode for high temp and see if that helps as long as your sure it's not over heating. Make sure both fans are running and that one is pushing and the other pulling air.
1306  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S3 Keeps resetting itself on: October 14, 2014, 10:41:54 AM
Good Morning Guys

I wish my first post wasn't a "problem" post but like so many, I found your site looking for some rhyme or reason as to the behaviour of my nice new Antminer S3+ (batch 9)

Set it up last night and all was good - hashing away at about 430-450 Gh/s as expected. Came to look at it this morning and is seems to be cuttin out all together, suddenly coming back to life as the right speed then 10 minutes later dropping off to zero before restarting again. This is after about 12 hours continuous running if that helps?

Now, I also have an Antminer S1 running and another S3 running elsewhere, both of which are behaving as they should which rules out the mining pool. I know the configuration within the unit must be right or it wouldn't be mining at all which again, rules that out.

I have this set up with an Aerocool Intergrator 600W +80W PSU (http://www.yoyotech.co.uk//600w-aerocool-integrator-psu-12cm-black-fan-active-pfc-tw-caps-acp-i600hg?var=17061&utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=purenet_feed&gclid=CjwKEAjwk_OhBRD06abu3qSoxlwSJACt7sZ7tSqC2-7sGpNzjoxnE81zZt-dVNcJPLOx-qGd8E5SPRoCLN3w_wcB) using the daisy chained connector. Could this be causing an abnormal load on the PSU? Would it work better if the individual plugs were used?

I am also hardwired into an Ethernet Hub so no wireless connection issues.

Can anyone shed any light on this as I need to get this running properly obviously?

Thanks

PSU should be ok as its a single rail so should have no issues no matter if your using one or two cables. I am wondering what the temp on the miner is getting up to? You can see the temp on the status page.

You would be better to post this on the S3 thread than start a new one.

1307  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Whatever happened to Bitcoin Affiliate Network? on: October 13, 2014, 09:38:53 PM
The admin locked it after deleting posts & evidence of a scam accusation involving their S3 givaway to fake users apparently:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=782765.0

Seems the admin (Phawner) uploaded fake pics, and the owner (s0br) was unable to deny/disprove any of the accusations.

Not sure I ever seen any "proof" of fake pictures or winning fake users... I know I was a winner and recieved a S3 miner. I have proof of it in my basement and have a friend that was also a winner of a miner. Sure seems there is a mounted attack against a new pool that was much needed. I have seen scam accusations against most of the pools and some by members that carry a lot of weight not just by members hiding behind newbie accounts. As s0br said either mine at the pool if you want or don't. If your cause is so almighty why not go after all the pools that have been accused of scams??
1308  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: What is the BEST BTC pool? on: October 13, 2014, 09:23:48 PM
I have been thru most of the pools over the last few years. But you may want to try BAN pool. It is a PPS payout so you don't have the variation that you will have with other pools.  https://mining.bitcoinaffiliatenetwork.com/admin.php
1309  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Whatever happened to Bitcoin Affiliate Network? on: October 13, 2014, 09:18:04 AM
I still mine at BAN and the pool operator does seem to have the pool running better as the payouts hit my wallet every 2 hours. I never was a big fan of PPS but with the 10% bonus the pool pays I really do like the steady payouts. The pool has had pretty good luck finding blocks the last couple of days even if it does not mean anything to the miners. The pool is gearing up for merge mining soon, which once again I am not a big fan of merge mining either but as long as I can make more with this pool I will stay.

Edit: Most just use the pools IRC chat now

1310  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BitcoinAffiliateNetworks S3 "Giveaway" Promotion Scam to Fake User Accounts.... on: October 12, 2014, 11:24:05 PM
I have removed it as a backup pool because of their lies, the overwhelming evidence against them & the complete lack of response to the allegations - apart from the insults hurled at the OP.

I believe the issues raised here have nothing to do with weather they pay or not, what they pay or how often. It's that they lied openly got caught. I am not comfortable using a pool that lies to it's users & the community, no matter what they pay. I need to be able to trust a pool, and it's obvious that this pool isn't one of them.

There is more to Bitcoin than profit - trust is far more valuable, as is honesty.

All good points but I have mined at all the large pools and some that are no longer large but have seen each pool be accused of all kinds of things, so there would be very few pools left to mine on if I let all the unanswered questions that people have brought up on each pool bother me.
1311  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: October 12, 2014, 08:18:08 PM
all this talk is making me want to seriously investigate building a data center...

not that i have any miners besides 50 USB sticks...

Left over from the original first group buy? I was in on the second group buy with Canary. Seems like a lifetime ago!
1312  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BitcoinAffiliateNetworks S3 "Giveaway" Promotion Scam to Fake User Accounts.... on: October 12, 2014, 08:14:13 PM
Now that this thread has quietened down since the BANsters decided to leave it alone, what's the deal? Has s0br got back to you at all? Have any of the supposed fake account winners come forward? Should I remove BAN from my failover list...... Cheesy

I still mine there and it's been paying every 2 hours. Even if not your first choice for mining it really should be a great backup pool.

I've been mining in BAN pool since I found out about it (couple months ago), it's been paying out more than any other pool I've mined in (I have mined in ghash.io / BTCguild / Eligius / Slush). Yes, it had many problems with payouts at start, but it kept paying out correctly with a huge bonus that no other pool can.
This thread was created to whine about a silly giveaway (Is OP the guy who likes and shares every facebook giveaway and then writes to facebook support that it was fake? (99% of fb are fake and nobody cares about it). I don't care about the giveaway being fake / or not, BAN pool was and still is the most profitable pool. IMO, author of this thread is creating free advertisment for BAN. There is no such thing as bad publicity

I agree that the pool has paid me more than I was making at other pools. At first every time the pool had a snafu I would pull my miners but always got paid any shares I had coming. I also can say I was a winner of one of the S3 miners and did recieve it.
1313  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Low payouts? What could be causing it? on: October 12, 2014, 11:08:48 AM
All pools have variance depending on how many blocks are found. So if you want steady payout try mining at a PPS pool. I mine at BAN https://mining.bitcoinaffiliatenetwork.com/admin.php

1315  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: are s1's even worth running? on: October 07, 2014, 12:42:48 AM
I run 30+ of them... undervolted... they are still making lots of $ at 0.064 elec rate.

they would still make money running full power. but I didn't like the 8000kw hrs bill last month
my electric cost is double yours at .125kwh +taxes

Mines double yours @ .25 + standing charge Sad

Ouch! I undervolted mine to cut 200 watts from each but they were at the break even point for me so I sold them.

I just sold all my 9 S1's 2 weeks ago on Craig's List. I had them undervolted using only @170 watts each but the $50 I got out of each was more than they would have mined before they went in the red on electric cost.
1318  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Home mining is dead. on: October 03, 2014, 09:26:29 AM
If you have some solar panels at home maybe it could work out your profit.

I have 5kw of solar panels at home and am currently pulling in an average of 25KwH per day.  I get three times more money selling the power to the grid than using it to make bitcoins.  The sold power is tax free, refund from the power company comes automatically once every three months, there are no exchange fees to pay and I don't need to hand over my private info to some anonymous exchange in eastern Europe.

In other words, although I could mine for 'free' during the day, I would be losing a lot of money doing so.

Just wondering how much per KW the power company is paying or crediting you? Some electric companies require a duel meter where the electric you use they charge you normal price but only want to pay you for your electric "generating cost" which can be a 1/4 of what they charge.
1319  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Hash rate declining slightly in recent weeks. on: October 03, 2014, 09:20:59 AM
I think we will see a small increase in difficulty this next time.
1320  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: solo.ckpool.org 0.5% fee anonymous solo bitcoin and free testnet mining for all! on: October 02, 2014, 10:31:21 AM
I have pointed a miner back at this pool as I sold off all my S1's miners last weekend and now only have 4 S3's left. So I figure I will keep 3 of them mining on PPS, which will still turn a small profit over my electric cost and the 4th one I can mine here without cost other than the equipment and take a chance.

Seems like my miners always hash better here than other pools?
