1321  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoind sendrawtransaction / blockchain.info/pushtx on: April 06, 2013, 11:37:00 AM
Now you can test: importprivkey cPixSa5hRDdiyLUwynjP5jfxWkGoEZHxYonVMvFD18pWgd8VjvcK "testfun"

You've got the v0.2.10 protocol change in? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=55852.0 All messages require checksums.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Protocol_specification#Common_structures

Field Size    Description    Data type    Comments
4    magic    uint32_t    Magic value indicating message origin network, and used to seek to next message when stream state is unknown
testnet3    0x0709110B    0B 11 09 07

There's no magic in dumped raw transactions from bitcoin. Are you transmitting over the wire with your own code or just sending to bitcoind? If bitcoin, maybe you are not signing?

wiki:

Input selection control

1 Get a list of not-yet-spent outputs with listunspent
2 Create a transaction using createrawtransaction
3 Apply signatures using signrawtransaction
4 Submit it using sendrawtransaction
1322  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: TP's TestNet Faucet - a faucet and eWallet for TestNet on: April 06, 2013, 11:13:29 AM
I loaded up the faucet with 5000 testcoins yesterday and the faucet is empty again. Emptying it is as simple as submitting your address once and then just hitting refresh repeatedly.

Update: sent it 1000 more and the balance isn't updating after 9 blocks. Update 2: and now they're there...
1323  Other / Off-topic / Re: Can you identify me? 2.5BTC reward. on: April 06, 2013, 10:06:49 AM
Hello. Like in this thread I want to see if it is possible for me to be completely anonymous.

Like the original challenge, the reward will be given to the person that provides:

  • forum account id of 'real me'
  • any IP-address that could be traced to my real identity by authorities
  • my 'real' email address

I will use the same rules:

  • Rules are to be interpreted by me, in case of dispute, I am right, you are wrong
  • you must post here one of the above infos and a bitcoin address to which the bounty should be sent
  • you must provide a credible story of how you obtained the info
  • a 'hunch' is not enough, no guessing
  • I can change these rules at any time and will do so in OP (Original Post, the one you're reading)
  • the state of the OP at the time of claim is decisive for the rules, so please quote OP when claiming bounty

If you can find out my real name and/or address and/or telephone number, then PM me for some/all the reward.

Also like the original, I'll give away small amounts of bitcoin (0.05-0.1 BTC) to people pointing out flaws/mistakes/possible improvements regarding my anonymity. These rewards will come from the total 2.5BTC reward, so the sooner someone identifies me the more bitcoins they get.

Eventually I will allow theymos to release all info held about me, blindmixerdr (connection logs & times etc). But not yet. Also, I will soon publish the address of a bitcoin mixing service (onion address). Maybe that will give more clues.

Please note that I am trying very hard to be anonymous. But I will say that I am a long time user of this forum.

You are Octavian - a difficult match since the other account has few posts:

1 - uncommon hyphenation in the word IP-address, over-hyphenation elsewhere,
2 - frequent use of slash/stroke to separate two options,
3 - 'single quotes' where they aren't needed, or when other posters would use "double quotes",
4 - And beginning sentence fragments with conjunction
5 - account was logged into yesterday (not abandoned...)

Just one example:

Subject: Are there security issues with Bitcoin for Free / Faucet-Services?
Hi WikileaksDude,
I just asked a question - why getting personal?
There might be some 'Free Bitcoins'-sites which track BTC addresses when they are reused for the transactions history.
And the sites have the corresponding user's IP-address also...
Have a good day.

IRL?
https://twitter.com/OctavianMihai

There are very thin threads connecting this IRL Octavian - exposure to Bitcoin through producing TWiST, but there are the single quotes all over the twitter. I'm choosing Mihai over Octavian Cara who is in the UK; the OP is leaking multilingual grammar.

"Highly encrypted" BZZZZ

That's close enough to right. Helluva lot better than some of the other recent articles.
It's as close as saying my bank account is "highly funded" when my balance is zero.

1327  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is Bitcoin wallet doing when it says synchronizing with network? on: April 04, 2013, 10:01:32 PM
It's downloading all past transactions, which need to complete before you can see your balance.

1328  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How much HD space does Bitcoin-qt take up per day on avg. on: April 04, 2013, 09:01:30 PM
The average block size for the last 1896 blocks (since the start of this difficulty period) was 169.4KB.
The number of blocks per day was 166.7 (instead of the expected average 144 blocks per day)
This is a daily rate of 27.6MB per day.

If all pools created their individual maximum block sizes at current settings, it would likely be around 60MB a day.
1329  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I don't understand change on: April 04, 2013, 08:38:39 PM
Transactions are comprised of a list of inputs, individual payments that were previously received by a wallet, and outputs, a list of amounts and addresses to which the bitcoins will be transferred.

Only the full amount of an input can be spent. If the exact amount of the transaction can’t be constructed from available inputs, an additional output, called change, is added, which sends the remainder back to a new address in the user’s wallet. Change addresses are not shown to the user.

The clarification you need to provide is your definition of cold wallet.

If it is a paper wallet address, for example, it can't be spent alone, the private key must be imported into a client in order to use it. Change will be sent to one of that wallet's reserve addresses.

If it is a seperate wallet.dat from bitcoin-qt that you had offline, and you reactivate that wallet (turning it back into a "hot" wallet) and send a transaction from it not spending the full balance, the change will be sent back to another address in that wallet (which is already precreated in its reserve pool).

That would be the code signing key:
http://pgp.mit.edu:11371/pks/lookup?op=vindex&search=0x29D9EE6B1FC730C1

It has been signed by Gavin along with other developers.

Here's my public key, or you can fetch it from the MIT pgp keyserver.  Or it is linked on the bitcoin.org homepage.

1331  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How do "Purses" work when withdrawing USD funds? on: April 04, 2013, 07:56:53 PM
It looks like "purse" is from "WebMoney Purse", another russian site. That field "purse" doesn't change when you choose other withdraw methods though, so it could just be a bad Russian translation of "account number".

Example, this quote, which makes no sense unless you realize this is a non-native speaker using approximate translations. "Purse" could either be "virtual currency wallet" or "banking account number" or both or anything...

Confirmed, I received my missing NMC now, thanks.

We apologize for the delay we had problems with a purse NMC.

1333  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: When sending via Bitcoin QT, what amount is not subject to Transaction Fee? on: April 04, 2013, 06:55:43 PM
I just found out it costs 0.0005 BTC to send out 0.0005 BTC Totalling the amount to 0.001

I was wondering what is the minimum
BTC to send in order to avoid transaction fee? And who does it benefits?

I remember sending transactions last year with a .1 BTC fee.  seems ridiculous now but I suspect that the current .0005 fee will go down in the future and seem almost as ridiculous

Epi.

I remember sending transactions last year with a .1 .4 BTC fee, just for the fun of it.

I've also given away more than that to forum members
1334  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question on wallet, could not find this case during search. on: April 04, 2013, 05:46:15 AM
Quote from: we.lovebitco.in
Only an address’s owner can send a payment from an address, because only an owner’s wallet contains the secret private key.
...
If the wallet data stored on a computer is deleted, or the computer hard drive dies, then the owner loses the ability to send their bitcoins to anyone else – they are lost. This is why it is important to make a secure backup of the wallet before using Bitcoin for significant amounts.
The money is sent to that address. If you have no wallet containing that address, they will stay in the address forever.
1335  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: blockchain.info transactions unconfirmed on: April 04, 2013, 05:38:47 AM
The problem with blockchain.info wallet is that although it says it follows the fee policy of the Bitcoin reference client (the default setting in account options), it doesn't. Even though this is set, the send box likely defaults to 0 BTC as a "miners fee" (sic) (a transaction fee).

Quote
Default Fee Policy (settings)

Blockchain.info transactions are free of charge. However the bitcoin network may require an additional Miners Fee which affects the speed your transactions are verified and helps support the network. Change the settings below to alter the default Miners Fee Policy.

◎ Frugal - A Miners fee will not be included unless absolutely essential. Transactions will be significantly slower to confirm.
◎ Normal - Follow the fee policy suggested by the mainline bitcoin client. Recommended.
◎ Generous - Fees will be set to ensure transactions are high priority (0.001 BTC Base Fee).

You may notice that when you send a transaction, you are given an option "miner fee", however you are given no idea of the appropriate amount. The base amount is 0.0005 BTC per KB, but no calculation is made showing you the correct amount to pay or what the transaction size in KB will actually be.

Most transactions will be less than 1KB, but if you've received a bunch of payments (such as from a gambling site) and send them at once, the transaction may be much bigger, and paying just a 0.0005 fee could result in "ignore this spam" priority.

Setting the fee to zero will get you hours and hours of your transaction being ignored by miners in any case.

You may note that none of these "my transaction isn't confirming" threads are from users of the Bitcoin reference software.
1336  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: When sending via Bitcoin QT, what amount is not subject to Transaction Fee? on: April 04, 2013, 05:03:34 AM
The tx fee system is indeed horribly broken when it comes to microtransactions....

I've been struggling with this posting all over the forum for MONTHS running my faucet site satoshi spam ad site www.BitHits.info

Please read the Satoshi paper and find the section where it promises cheap bloated transactions, even those that degrade network performance for all and create useless unspendable outputs and unprunable transactions. If you find it difficult to send such transactions, the fee system isn't broken, it's working.
1337  Bitcoin / Press / Re: 2013-04-03 Front page of Financial Times on: April 04, 2013, 04:44:05 AM
Quote from: another flapping head
Jim Angel, professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University, is skeptical of Bitcoin's long-term viability. "Governments don't like competition in the currency business and if it gets too big they will clamp down," he said.

"Also, you are trusting algorithms to protect the system, and we all know that technology breaks or gets hacked.

"We are just one scandal away from Bitcoin collapsing entirely."

deepceleron, creator of we.lovebitco.in and anonymous self-appointed Minister of Bitcoin Bullshit, is skeptical of the Financial Times' expert quotes:
Jim Angel sounds like another uninformed loudmouth shooting off his lie-hole, because the technology Bitcoin uses will forever be beyond his comprehension. Actually, looking at the Georgetown press page where they celebrate staff press appearances, they are more likely a pay per quote factory akin to Forrester Research, who you can call when you need something said by someone else.

Who's government? Bitcoin is global, can be anonymous, and doesn't need the permission of a government. Services like PayPal can pay government protection money and play ball, allowing them to create lies to get government thugs to protect them against DDOS. Bitcoin services can do the same.

What scandal? Most of the Bitcoin services have had some hack, but keep on going (this forum, mtgox, etc). Wallet, exchange, and investment sites run off with people's bitcoins. The currency doesn't break though, and people are paying $130 to get some.

The price may be a bubble, or it may the last time bitcoins are this cheap. Bitcoin needs no company producing dividends, needs no correlation to profits, assets or GDPs, and is like nothing seen before by these economists, not even previous currencies. Tulips have a potentially unlimited supply and cannot be subdivided into 100,000,000 parts and sent around the world instantly.

The headline assertion that bitcoin is a bubble is irresponsible.
1338  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: When sending via Bitcoin QT, what amount is not subject to Transaction Fee? on: April 04, 2013, 04:25:42 AM
The default fee that Bitcoin-qt includes is adequate for inclusion in just a few blocks. A minimum fee of 0.0005 per KB is required for all transactions except those that send large values of aged bitcoins and do not have any outputs less than 0.01. This is what the transaction fee link above says too.
1339  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: First synchronization of Bitcoin Wallet taking days!! on: April 03, 2013, 06:49:12 PM
here is a clip from the log file, ...
The information seen at the end of the log snippet is normal background traffic, it is you receiving transactions over the network (orphan because you don't have the blocks funding them) and discovering peers. What you are looking for is the last entries where blocks are downloaded and the data surrounding them, this is a normal block receive:
Code:
received getdata (2 invsz)

I would say start over after deleting previous "blocks" and "chainstate" directories, but if you have a hardware problem corrupting the database or doing bad math, this won't fix the problem. If you get the bootstrap torrent, at least you won't have to download multiple times to attempt importing.
1340  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: First synchronization of Bitcoin Wallet taking days!! on: April 03, 2013, 06:05:52 PM
If you need to diagnose a Bitcoin client that is not downloading blocks, you should investigate two potential causes:

1. Network problems or bad peer

Do you have several connections to other peers? Hover over the "signal bars" in the lower right - how many connections do you have? Are you running firewall/antivirus software that might be interfering with your Bitcoin connection?

You may have randomly connected to a bad node that is not sending blocks when requested. A restart of the client may establish new connections if the current block number doesn't progress within 15 minutes or so.

2. Corrupted blockchain database

Usually occurs (and will continue to occur) due to hardware problems. Bitcoin has 100% CPU usage and heavy disk access while downloading/verifying the blockchain, and will reveal hardware faults that other programs didn't. Even a laptop fan plugged up with lint can make for a crashy Bitcoin computer. If you are overclocking, don't.

Check the debug.log and db.log in the Bitcoin data directory, the end of the log files may have messages that reveal the problems Bitcoin is having.
