Is there a religion that resembles Buddhism that is ok with sex and alcohol?   I think that's where I would fit best  Undecided

EDIT: Scratch that - I'm not sure I fit in any religion  Sad     I feel like I should just create my own.
1364  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Christian BS on: October 29, 2014, 06:08:59 PM
I think the extreme versions of both Christians and Atheists are both a little odd. I can't understand the logic in either direction and usually find myself somewhere in between. Atheists like to point to the fact that Christians really don't know anything but what the Bible supposedly says happened and do so using Science as their weapon. "Real" Christians seem to think anyone not following the Bible word for word is a lost soul and needs to be saved using the Bible as their weapon.

Atheists believe their master, Science.
Christians believe their master, God.

I believe God(s) exists but I can't bring myself to believe, word for word, a collection of books & writings that has been compiled starting sometime  3,500 years ago (or however many years it is speculated) has somehow made it to modern times intact with the same information it was attempting to relay.... Let alone whether the information was even started off accurately or was passed between people multiple times before it was written into the book we call the Bible. I guess I don't have that much faith in us as humans?

1365  Other / Off-topic / Re: IS UFO or ALIENS are real ? on: October 24, 2014, 08:10:25 PM
UFO has been saw a lot of times.
Aliens may exist, but I don't think it will be hi-tech like sci-fi movies where they have inhuman spaceships with blasting power far greater than anything made on Earth.

Without going into the origins of what people see as UFOs, why do you think aliens wouldn't have technology far more advanced than what humans have at present? As I stated before, I believe there could be species, literally, billions of years more advanced than humanity, given the sheer amount of time since the Big Bang and since the appearance of (what I believe to be, maybe incorrectly) conditions similar to those that gave rise to life on Earth throughout the universe. Maybe we will still meet a lot of species at roughly our technological level in the future, but I doubt those will be the majority - I mean, ask yourself, what will our advancements look like in 100 years? 1000 years? 10000 years? They might have had billions of years more than us to make those advancements.

This is pretty much the same argument I make when having these kind of debates. Also, isn't it self-evident that any alien beings that can visit us have superior intellect and technology to us?

I agree with most of these statements but I am not sure its self-evident that any alien beings that can visit us would have superior intellect and technology over us. We do not know what other elements exist on other planets in the universe and how strong those elements can be, or even the level of intellect required to use those elements based on the environment of the planet.

Look at things like uranium 236 right on our own moon, couldn't there be heavier elements being created somewhat naturally which could open up potentials for energy to an alien civilization that we have yet to come close to creating?

1367  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Butterflylabs Huge SCAM on: October 24, 2014, 05:25:26 PM
For the sake of argument, if they got completely away with it and were allowed to resume business after the case was dismissed who would buy from them now? There is absolutely no chance that they could remain in business. Even if they get away without a fine it's very likely that they will be supervised as they refund customer money to every customer that requests a refund (which at this point is everyone except idiots that want a miner that can't ROI).

Except that we've telling the community that BFL is a scam for years and people STILL seem to buy them.  You are assuming too much about people, BLF could last years and years and years as new bitcoin miners come on board.
There are some people that just don't like forums and probably do not even use bitcointalk. They are just looking for bitcoin miners and butterflylabs pops up and has all of these cool looking products, awesome prices (if they actually delivered on time) and endless promises. Not the smartest consumers in the world, but they still don't deserve to get their money taken from them and held hostage.

According to a rough timeline provided by city officials, in the days before Spencer fell ill, he went on a 3-mile jog, went to the High Line park, rode the subway and, on Wednesday night, got a taxi to a Brooklyn bowling alley. He felt tired starting Tuesday, and felt worse on Thursday when he and his fiancee made a joint call to authorities to detail his symptoms and his travels. EMTs in full Ebola gear arrived and took him to Bellevue in an ambulance surrounded by police squad cars.

The Forbes article has no value to me, anyone can hand select 600 "strong candidates", narrow it down to 400, and be able to spin the percentages whichever direction they want. I realize there are a group of people who everyone expects on these lists, and they have no choice to put them on, but I fear there was bias amongst the "Forbes 400 Team" doing the article. I would also argue there are people who don't want to be in the public eye that are not on the list.

Aside from all of that, focusing on the "Top XXX" group of anything shouldn't prove a thing. Especially only 400 people, but I guess its entertaining to read.  Wink

This is the 33rd year of the flagship Forbes 400.  Though we’ve been at it a long time, it’s still always a challenge. Our reporters dig deep. This year we started with a list of more than 600 individuals considered strong candidates and then got to work.

Quote
Of course, we don’t pretend to know what is listed on each billionaire’s private balance sheet, although some candidates did provide paperwork to that effect.

Quote
Some billionaires who preside over private companies were happy to share their financial figures, but others were less forthcoming. A few even threatened to sue. To value these businesses we coupled revenue or profit estimates with prevailing price-to-revenue or price-to-earnings ratios for similar public companies.

It's not the market, it's the people in it. A free market could be the greatest & kindest place on Earth if everyone on the planet were kind and had good morals and ethics.  Wink

How incredibly dumb is that logic? That's the same as saying, a communist system could be the greatest & kindest place on Earth if everyone on the planet were kind and had good morals and ethics.  Wink

See? everything can work IF everyone on the planet were kind and had good morals and ethics, IF.

It may sound the same but I think a communist system is an entirely different conversation..... your comparing a socioeconomic system with a financial market and I am not sure I can find the logic in that.

That's true. I was assuming people would act in ways that are profitable and competitive. But, as you say, these are choices people may make or not make.

I think it should be a little more detailed and not as much of a generalization. It sounds like your assuming people would act in ways that are profitable and competitive no matter what ethical or moral guidelines are broken?

I had assumed...or hoped  Undecided ... that there were other ways to be profitable and competitive and that people would act without the need to demean themselves to a lower standard just because they have a small shred of anonymity. But, alas, bitcoin shows glimmers of both extremes, the good and the bad.

I realize there will be plenty of people who are just generally bad people but I feel like there are more of the good guys then the bad, and I hope that people in the bitcoin community do not decide the only real way to make a profit with bitcoins is to start a scam, defraud someone, or manipulate the market. I think this would be bad for bitcoin.

I'll conclude with the fact that money does not make you smart, and not having any doesn't make you stupid. It also doesn't take a genius to get rich, even the ethical way. The majority of rich people I know are NOT rich because they worked hard and earned it. At the end of the day, those rich people likely see me as one of the stupid ones, but I am OK with that.  Grin

Yes, she shouldn't have flown but the CDC is at fault for not being more vigilant here.

They're busy with some Zombie Apocalypse.

BTW Has anyone found out if the CDC are listed on Dunn & Bradstreet yet?

1374  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Anyone following the ebola outbreak? on: October 16, 2014, 05:08:44 PM
What is Ebola? It even exists?

Yes, it exists. However a lot of ppl (even a lot of west africans) think that the current outbreak is just a hoax (like the swineflu "pandemic" was) for making a lot of money on vaccines, medicines and supplies on the west and scamming some money out of the world on the local government side.
To make accusations worse, many news depicting people sick with ebola seems to be fake with some paid "crisis actors".

a conspiracy like that is probably possible but would take a lot of effort, a lot of fear, and a lot of cooperation from multiple countries, I just don't see this being as realistic as other conspiracy theories I have heard of. This also seems like something that would get exposed somewhat quickly and most governments wouldn't get involved.

I am not so sure this is ebola and am not so sure it isn't intentionally being spread but one thing I think we should believe is that something is making a lot of people sick and appears to be killing people in multiple countries.

1376  Economy / Economics / Re: why do people agree to pay taxes? on: October 16, 2014, 10:40:36 AM
Paying Taxes is the reason we are getting Health services, Law enforcement, Clean streets and parks, Great Infrastructure.

Government need money to provide us a better place to live that's why they force us to pay taxes.
This is all true. Unfortunately the percentages of our taxes that go towards these things listed are screwed up by the nonsense back room deals our politicians create which leads to billions of wasted tax dollars.

Reason for selling?
I'm just not interested in posting anymore, just going to go back to lurking here. Looking to get what I can for my account as it's making a decent amount of BTC.
What type of campaign has your account been involved with for generating money so far?

--snip--
the next day(yesterday) he just came to me and said "In my life I wont ever touch this bitcoin, it is just satan's tool to create a one world currency for the one world government. Satoshi is just satan mark my words he will never be revealed or even if revealed it will be a proxy becuase this is the way satan works! from behind". He said you will become a millionaire or even billionaire if you hold on even a few bitcoins, because it is sure to take over the world.
--snip--

Satan is alive and well and is absolutely involved in BTC - who isn't??  Shocked
Look at all of the evil that is involved in bitcoin. But, like in all things in life, you have a choice to use it for good or bad... and just like in life, those evils are all around.

All that being said, does it say somewhere in the bible that Satan wants to create a one world currency with a one world government?  or how would he draw this conclusion?   Excuse my religious ignorance.  Huh

EDIT: Might have found my answer: http://www.gotquestions.org/one-world-government.html

EDIT #2: Ok, so after reading the bible references, still not sure I can draw the same conclusions as your uncle. I can possibly see a one world government being prophesied, but the universal form of control for buying/selling involves some type of mark on the right hand or forehead, so that no one can buy/sell unless they have the "mark".....  why would we need to do that with bitcoin?

They were saying in the news today how 70+ healthcare workers had contact with the ebola patient in Texas and NONE of them were following any sort of protocol. No masks or protective gear and not in isolation area. Are you kidding me?? I thought we were prepared to deal with ebola in the West. There are going to be a lot more cases popping up in Texas at least. Guarantee you that.

You guys are all acting like this is just a normal ebola outbreak.  This outbreak has already claimed way more lives then any prior ebola outbreak recorded, and in my opinion, its not the same.  What makes this current outbreak so different?? Maybe its being distributed?
