If you want to use a Ledger Nano S hardware wallet to manage your private keys use Mycelium. If you want to be able to send transactions replaceable (RBF) use Electrum. If you want to avoid blockchain analysis use Samourai. Mycelium is most popular. Try out all three if storage space is not a problem on your phone. |

If you want to do the two computer thing for cold storage Electrum already supports that. This is the recommended way. You have to use a USB key to shuttle transactions back and forth to sign. OTOH it is a lot easier just buying a hardware wallet and using it with Electrum. |

So, in the last couple of months I have spread my portfolio to about 20 different tokens.
I am now looking for a hardware wallet to better secure them.
From what I read so far, the Ledger Nano S looks as the preferred choice, mostly for its support for multiple tokens (as opposed to Trezor's BTC only).
Seeing it's on backorder till late July, I was wondering if there are any other recommended hardware wallets?
Also, as my intention is to hodl for 5-10 years, should I consider using paper wallets, instead?
Any other security tips will be much appreciated.
Used to be Ledger Nano S supported more altcoins than Trezor but Trezor is catching up. They both work with MyEtherWallet for tokens. The problem is finding either in stock. Better place an order now so you receive as soon as possible. I use both and the major differences are 1) Trezor can be used with one hand while Nano S takes two to press the buttons and 2) Nano S is more rugged than Trezor. There is a video on YouTube of a Nano S being driven over by a car and still works. Nano S guarantee is two years while Trezor is warrantied for one. Both have secure on device recovery now so you never have to be concerned about typing your seed into a computer if you need to replace a broken hardware wallet. Better buy two while you are at it, it is always nice to have a spare in case of loss or malfunction. As long as you have a spare you can recover your written seed to a new wallet in 10 minutes. |

Isn't putting your electrum phrase on keepass fine though?
Also i assume most people have a copy of keepass on dropbox right? So would that still be fine? The thing is if you have your electrum phrase on keepass and also on dropbox, then as long as you remember your keepass masterkey password and your dropbox password, then isn't that really all that is needed? I mean if dropbox gets hacked... has it? Well they still cannot open your keepass file without your master password right?

Yeah, I would think that should be fine as long as you are using a secure enough master password for KeePass that isn't easily brute forceable. Also, you must be sure that you never reuse your KeePass master password for any other websites which could end up leaking it in a compromise down the road. Do others agree on this? Thus as long as you use a strong enough master password for keepass, then typing the 12 word phrase in there would be fine? Also, keeping a keepass on file on dropbox would allow you to have an online backup? can someone tell me if this is pretty much good enough so you don't need to keep a piece of paper in your apt with your 12 word phrase there etc? Dropbox is the last place you want to store a seed, encrypted or not. If you use a non-memorable password, that is at least 22 characters with symbols, you won't be able to memorize it. I think the definition of a secure password should be one that is so random it can not be memorized. You are always better off keeping your seed on paper only, never online. |

Using a TrueCrypt container can give you a false sense of security. First, when you typed your seed or password in a document you later saved in the container, you briefly exposed the seed or password to logging malware. Worse, any time you open a TrueCrypt container your password and work is saved in virtual memory paging files which are not erased on shut down. You need to take steps to tell your machine to delete the paging files or (better) only run TrueCrypt from a computer with whole disk encryption. Interesting, I hadn't heard about the password being stored in paging files. Is it possible to actually extract a truecrypt volume password from a paging file even if the container is not currently mounted? Any links to documentation or proof of concepts on this? Take a look at the TrueCrypt user manual. Windows leaks a lot. |

Both Trezor and Ledger now have on device recovery. On Trezor it is an advanced recovery option. You should never type the seed of a wallet on a computer, offline of not, or God forbid, store the seed on a USB drive or cloud backup, encrypted or not. |

Can i wrote Private Key from this device on a paper,for my own peace of mind,or cant ?
The private keys cannot be directly accessed. That is the entire point of the device. However, you should/must write down the seed words and keep them private and very secure. With those 24 seed words every private key and every transaction ever done by the device can all be recovered. So, if you take the 24 words and do the right thing with them you can generate every possible private key the device has used or will ever use. Also a good idea to consider using accounts generated with a passphrase. That way a thief who steals your seed and knows what to do with it cannot steal your bitcoin without the passphrase. |

The general consensus is that blockchain.info is a crappy wallet which does not estimate fees well at all. There are more frantic posts about stuck transactions from blockchain.info wallet users than any other. Multibit HD is another one to stay away from, many user complaints and not maintained well.
Search and you will have a hard time finding complaints about Electrum. It estimates fees well and allows you to send transactions replaceable, so if lag occurs you can bump the fee up. Combine Electrum with a Ledger Nano S or Trezor to manage your private keys and you have a great secure wallet. Electrum is also one of the few bitcoin wallets available in a portable version that does not write to /appdata/.

I thought the Fibonacci extensions from the previous post looked a bit off so I recalculated. Everyone is familiar with the Fibonacci sequence 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233, 377, 610, 987, 1597, 2584, 4181, 6765, 10946 and so on. Fibonacci extensions are calculated by taking one of those numbers and dividing by the previous number to the left, e.g the first Fibonacci extension is 10946/6765=1.618. Use the second number to the left for the next extension 2.618 and so on. The Fibonacci extension sequence is 1.618, 2.618, 4.23, 6.854, 11.09, 17.94, 29.03 and so on. Redrawing the chart of last ATH $1163 to $152 low, with these Fibonacci extensions gives these targets:  Price has already almost reached the 2.618 target of $2798 with next target $4433. |

Electrum dynamic fees are accurate especially if you set the fee slider to high. It does not make sense to go cheap on fees. However newest Electrum lets you set fee to whatever you want if you disable dynamic fees, and if you enable RBF you can send replaceable, so when a transaction does not confirm because you used too low a fee you can click on it and bump the fee up. Less hassle if you just use the recommended fee in the first place.

Armory runs on top of Bitcoin Core so you will have to install Core and let it sync until you can use Armory. Armory was the first bitcoin wallet to provide cold storage using a watching only wallet on an online computer, with the signing wallet on an offline computer. You used a USB drive to shuttle transactions back and forth to sign and broadcast. Armory was always a bit of a pain to use and update, and when Trezor came out in 2014 most everyone who believed in cold storage switched to using Trezor. Then Ledger came along. Now hardware wallets are popular. Armory, not so much but it has some diehard fans who still use it. It is still the most private way to use bitcoin and security is the same as Trezor. Just not as convenient. If you already run a Bitcoin full node take a look. Electrum is probably the top bitcoin wallet available today. It has good dynamic fees and you can send replaceable, so you can bump a fee up if needed. It also supports all the common hardware wallets. Hard to go wrong with Electrum. |
