Altcoins are dying is because more and more people are finding out how easy it is to create a new coin and try to profit from it. That results in a large supply of altcoins, there are dozens of altcoins coming out daily on bitcointalk.org. Altcoinland is dominated by get rich quick scams, pumps and dumps, lies and deception. As more people get scammed by investing in a scamcoin the liquidity of the altcoin market decreases because traders are left with a sour taste in their wallets. When liquidity decreases so do the prices and marketcaps. Lets look at a comparison of altcoin marketcaps back in 2014 compared to altcoin market caps today.

Rofl, what a monumental logical failure. First, Coinbase isn't even an exchange (yet). Second, they are the only service with 70 million dollars backing.

Bitcoin has flaws, and some people are out there to improve upon them.
HTTP has flaws too, but for some strange reason no other protocol ever rose to compete with it. Why do you suppose that is?

I'll give you a hint, both HTTP and Bitcoin are protocols which change and evolve over time. You don't need alternate versions of an entity which itself is capable of change.

There's a reason neanderthals are extinct, they were an inferior version of an evolving entity, utterly redundant. Natural selection did its work then, just as unnatural (market) selection will do to altcoins now.

That is exactly what I am saying, it didn't work at all, it was a miserable failure, but it caused a lot of damage to society. Don't underestimate the stupidity of politicians.
Today's political reality is very different from the one that existed when the war on drugs began.

They can't stop bitcoin because it's a political non-starter, at least in western democratic society.

This is not realistic feasible
It's not feasible today under present conditions because you'd be competing with the network of computers. But if the hashing difficulty were to drop down to the same level it was at one hour after the genesis block was mined, it would become possible to mine this way. Remember, not so long ago "computer" was a job title!

My point stands, it is absolutely possible to mine bitcoin with pencil and paper. However, under present conditions it is extremely improbable that you would ever solve a single block within your lifetime.

In any case, Bitcoin would be far less adversely affected than you in this hypothetical scenario.

How can the Bitcoin system realistically survive without electricity?
Good old pencil and paper + carrier pigeons. It's just a puzzle. Minimal electricity means minimal computer mining, which means the difficulty would decrease dramatically on next update. Besides, even if some catastrophic solar event were to take down all the satellites and knock out some sections of the grid, it wouldn't adversely affect hydroelectric, geothermal, solar, or wind power. Absolute worst case is the network would go dormant.

Now, let me turn that question around: How can you survive without electricity? If the world loses electricity, you wouldn't be worried about bitcoin, you'd be worried about survival.

It will be fine. The sun has an eleven year cycle of activity which we are now at the peak of, it has never been a problem before so there's little reason to worry now.

This thread has nothing to do with bitcoin, which contrary to popular belief, doesn't even need the internet or computers or electricity to survive.

If (one of) your assailant(s) is frightened into discharging his firearm when you draw yours, your gun could get you killed.

If the police arrive and mistake you for one of the criminals, your gun could get you killed.
If you fire on your assailant and fail to kill with the first one or two shots, your gun could get you killed.

On the other hand, if you simply hand over your wallet to your assailant, you are pretty much guaranteed to get away unharmed.

Literally the ONLY situation in which I'd rather have a gun is if my assailant intends to kill me from the outset. I'm a nice guy, so that's pretty fucking far fetched.

You can't separate the blockchain from Bitcoin, they're one and the same. 
This. The network is secured by miners, the miners are incentivized by the value of the currency. The two are inextricably linked.
