1501  Economy / Speculation / Re: The Great Silk Road Crash of 20** ...? on: September 27, 2012, 06:30:01 AM
He is talking trolling about embedded images that are server-side. Even if this is possible somehow (I doubt it) then the server will fetch the image using Tor network and our "genius" will see Tor exit node's IP address in his logs. His posts at the end sound hillarious. How can someone know about all this stuff and have completely wrong understanding even in the basics? Maybe he is a so called "white hat" who just finished 5 year training in computer security?
Now, it's possible to set up your server so that the software running your hidden services can't access the internet except over Tor, but it's fairly non-trivial.
Most secure web servers would be double-NATed behind a stateful firewall that won't even allow the host to initiate outgoing connections to the internet. The host is only allowed to make make HTTP/S responses back to the internet. Patches, AV signatures, software updates, are all delivered from an internal host. This is standard practice to when attempting to comply with PCI-DSS, SOX, etc.

With a Tor hidden service, you just change the firewall rules so that the host can only send responses back into the Tor nework. Never allow it intiate a connection into Tor or out to the internet.

I'm pretty sure SR is not run by amateurs and I'd expect it's security to be on par with that of banks and financial institutions. Uploading a script and getting the server to execute it to give out some external IP address (which may be far away from the actual location), yeah whatever ....
1502  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [2500 GH] BTC Guild - Pure PPS Merged Mining, now testing STRATUM Mining on: September 21, 2012, 06:43:55 PM
Any reason why my browser is giving me the basic authentication prompt when I point it to btcguild.com?

Edit: Seems to be a redirect problem. If I type the full HTTPS URL to login.php I get in fine.
1503  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Small time miners - What do you do when ASICs hit and you don't upgrade? on: September 21, 2012, 02:30:41 AM
I am a small time miner with 5 Ghash/s. Half of those hashes are already supplied by FPGAs which willl be upgraded to ASICs when they become available. At that point in time my 7970s will be auctioned off on ebay. I don't understand why a small time miner won't or cannot upgrade to ASICs. Going by price point, a Jalapeno would be the new 5830/6870.

Unless you are talking about the really small time miner, like someone who mines part time with his gaming rig when he is not playing games. Not sure if their hashes would still make any significant contribution to the security of Bitcoin . They might as well save electricity and buy BTC with cash.
1504  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How long does MtGox -> Dwolla take to get into your bank account? on: September 17, 2012, 07:28:40 AM
It's about 5 days now total for me. 2 days to hit Dwolla and 3 days to hit bank.

1506  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anti Fractional Reserve Day on: September 14, 2012, 10:51:10 AM

Why do you want to destroy a system that hundreds of millions people are happy with (or at least, do not complain), when you can just step away from it peacefully?

If people knew about how the banking system works (almost no one does) they would surely NOT be happy.  Ignorance is bliss for those hundreds of millions. They all likely believe the government makes money.

Go around and ask one question..  Where does money come from?  The answers you get will almost certainly all be WRONG!
Ok, I'll bite. Where does money (fiat money) come from?

Remember, we are not talking about the purchasing power, wealth or value that the money might represent.
1507  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Going after Trendon Shavers, Pirateat40, BTCST on: September 12, 2012, 12:04:32 PM
You are putting words in my mouth, of course, like a true troll...

I am advocating for a radical change in direction, far far away from any of these so called "investments".

And whiners who lost money in the latest scam, should eat their losses, and accept that they too were conspirators of an obvious ponzi scheme.

This is all of course if they truly care about Bitcoin and would like to see it succeed.

If people want to go on a virtual witch hunt, I honestly couldn't think of anything more detrimental to Bitcoin.

It will just prolong this entire incident, and cause even more pain and losses.

IF they don't care about Bitcoin, then I really am not interested in giving those type of people even one minute of my time.

The reality is that people will do what they feel they need to do, whether you are talking about cash, gold or Bitcoins. Lives have been lost over gold and cash, yet it doesn't invalidate them. The Bitcoin "community" already extends far beyond this forum. You can't expect to control what people do and don't do with their coins, just like you can't tell people what to do with their gold and cash.
1508  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Starfish BCB - Loans and Deposits on: September 10, 2012, 12:17:59 PM
the fact that Patrick is slow to honor withdraw requests should be alarming to anyone involved in this scam.
There is a bank run going on. Maybe I am stupid, but how would a legit BTC bank honor timely withdrawals without a Federal Reserve or central bank to step in and become the lender of last resort?

Maybe the disagreement is on the definition of scam? If you are expecting a level of guarantee that can only be had with FDIC insurance and central bank backing I think you are asking for too much. I don't think most people here would want to socialize the risks associated wiht BCT lending.
1509  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Starfish BCB - Loans and Deposits on: September 10, 2012, 08:54:03 AM
Made a request to pull out a few hundred BTC several days ago. Happy to say that I just received a partial payment amounting to about a third of that. I think that this is a fair way to deal with the situation - in a possible bad case scenario the effects of any loans that could later turn out to be slow/toxic will be distributed pro rata amongst the depositors.
1510  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Buying 50.000 BTC on: September 09, 2012, 01:11:08 PM
OT:

Regarding Locale and Regional numeric formats, I feel that people should write numbers in the format of the language that they are writing in.

If you are writing in English (whether en_US, en_UK or some other variant), fity-thousand should be written as 50,000. If you are writing in German or Dutch, it would be 50.000. I've even seen some spreadsheets from Swiss banks where people would format is as 50`000.

Whatever it is, use the format of the language you are wrting in! That way there will be much less confusion.

What's it called when you use deposits from new investors to pay the early investors, and the whole thing collapses when there's no new depositors?  Roll Eyes
Fractional reserve banking?
1512  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Hashkings Lending,Deposit 1.25% INSURED, ALL PPT ACCOUNTS CLOSING ON 8/19 on: September 09, 2012, 12:48:18 AM
I wonder how intertwined are the various long-term deposit takers? Spreading out deposits in an attempt to spread risk could turn out to have been a big waste of time.
1513  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Why I trust Patrick Harnett on: September 06, 2012, 10:57:43 AM
Borrowing in fiat to loan out bitcoins? SOunds like some nasty exchange-risk there.
1) Borrowing BTC to convert to fiat does not make sense. You can get cheaper loans in fiat without the exchange risk.

2) Borrowing fiat to convert to BTC is also risky for both the lender and borrower. In addition to the 10% APR you need to add the exchange-risk. BTC-USD can easily go up by 50-100% or down by 50% over the next 12 months. If I were someone who borrowed USD at 10% APR from by bank, converted that to BTC, and loaned out the BTC to a business venture that operates using BTC (and not USD), I would probably loan it out for at least 10% + 50-100% APR = 60-110% APR. That way the BTC interest takes into account the USD interest and the BTC-USD risk.

3) Borrowing BTC to use as BTC makes more sense. It is difficult to say what a reasonable APR would be. It really depends on whether BTC-USD is expected to rise or fall over the loan period. IMO the APR should be less than 2), but probably still higher than fiat rates.

In summary, because of the exchange-risk component I would NOT consider a BTC loan with and interest rate of 60-110% APR to be usurious. Borrowing in BTC makes sense only when that business needs BTC and not fiat.
1514  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Beware, MtGox arbitrarily freezing verified accounts on: September 04, 2012, 08:17:16 AM
If anything it is the unverified account that should be made to verify. Accounts that are already verified should not be frozen just because the same IP address is used by another account.

Having said that, using the IP address as a sole criteria for this trigger is pretty stupid. I hope MtGox is using other criteria as well, such as type of IP address (residental, corporate) as well as browser/OS finger printing.
1515  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: when the price drops, i get depressed. why shouldn't i be? on: September 03, 2012, 09:58:36 AM
2. Read classical book by Jesse Livermore "Reminiscences of a stock operator";
Certainly a very good book but I thought it had pretty depressing ending. Not something I would read if I were already depressed.

Also the author is Edwin Lefevre and not Jesse Livermore.

would imagine he did a withdraw at some point and thus is in the winners circle Tongue

I thought the minimum balance to start was 5 BTC?
Clawback!!! Smiley

I know chances are slim to none but it probably is not wise to advertise.

The only things I will not  get for you are, Explosives, Guns, or Medals.
How about scopes/optics and short range radio equipment? I would imagine not, but I thought I'd ask.

Zyk is the first person I've ever felt the need to ignore. It's like a chipmunk chattering, there's noise but.... it doesn't have meaning that I can decipher and the anthropology team keeps standing around behind me muttering "alien".

I did the English->Albanian->German->Portuguese->English Google translation on one of his posts and it seemed to clean it up a bit. Less words same meaning.

My latest withdrawal was made Sunday and the funds arrived Monday. That's great.

1520  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Did pirate default? IRC Chat Log inside!! on: August 27, 2012, 06:24:45 AM
Perhaps he should spend more time trying to repay and re-earn the Bitcoins he owes, rather than attempting to NOW cover his tracks by removing personal and family information from the Internet that we have all had for 7 months now anyways.

I bet My Pirate Picture/Scrapbook is better than yours Wink
I had seen those family pictures out on the internet while doing some due dilligence prior to investing a few coins with pirate. I'd also ordered an Intellius background report and the names and relationships seemed to check out. The fact that he was living in the open and started hiding the family albums only now would suggest that he probably was not intentionally running a Ponzi, but more likely he screwed up with whatever he was doing and is now unable to return the coins or pay the interest.
