Can someone briefly explain why Patrick got a scammer tag, hopefully without the snide remarks? I'm guessing it's something other than this deposit scheme, or am I wrong?

For a while now I had feared that Kraken going down would also take down BCB.
1482  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Will we be able to mine Litecoin with ASIC's? on: November 13, 2012, 06:12:38 PM
Yep, once you are out of LTC you are out for good.
1483  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Would this work? on: November 04, 2012, 07:22:26 PM
The T2000 is mid-2000's server technology. It's been replaced by Intel Xeons in the Sun Fire line a long time ago. Not quite sure if it is weaker than an Atom though - the guy who said it was probably was exaggerating (a little).

I guarantee 4.5W of power can heat up a cup of coffee. Hell, you could even get water to boil!  All that's needed is a little add-on gadget: a perfectly insulating tent. It's a box made of styrofoam, with IR-reflective coating on the inside. It's got inductively coupled connection for electrical power, and a wireless data passthrough. Open the box. Place your Jalapeno inside and hook it up. Place the cup on top. Close the lid and seal the box. Establish the connection and start mining.  After a week or so you will have mined 0.07 bitcoins, boiled a cup of water, and fried a jalapeno. Quite an accomplishment.

It's not 4.5W of thermal energy. It's 4.5W of electrical energy. So it largely depends on the efficiency of the components they are using.

You lose power in 3 main places of these designs: AC to DC conversion (line voltage to input, so this doesn't apply to the jalapeno), the power supply section (converting from input voltage to the supply voltages), and the high frequency computation (in this case the ASIC chips).

That being said, only a fraction of that power will pop out as heat.
So what happens to the rest? I don't believe that hashes can be considered as "work" under the First Law of Thermodynamics.
1485  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Best setup for BFL single on: October 31, 2012, 07:45:02 AM
If you have a poorly running single it probably pays to reseat the heatsink and reapply thermal paste. IMO they applied 10 times more thermal paste than was necessary.

Two of mine had badly seated heatsinks caused by the top fan applying pressure on the copper piece. These would not even run on the 768 Mhs firmware without throttling. It looks like some lazy person intentionally bent the copper piece of the heatsing upwards in order to get to the fan connector that it partially shrouds. They then tried to make up for this by applying a ton of thermal paste. Anyway after bending back the heatsink and properly re-seating it with the right amount of paste, I was able to run the singles with faster firmware.

On the other hand I also received a few singles running at 832 MHs or higher out of the box. They seem to be well assembled and I left them alone.

I don't believe any of the ASIC vendors will shop before the block reward and not because they couldn't.

When there is money involved, no one can be trusted. Especially shady bitcoin vendors.

Bitcoin is too easily hidden as income which makes the opportunity even more tempting.

Im starting to believe this as well.
A large, low-cost tinfoil supplier must have just entered the market.
1487  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: miners: how are you going to react to the reward halving? on: October 28, 2012, 06:48:25 AM
I think I will become outraged and demand a change in protocol so that the original reward may be restored. Then when nobody listens I will quit mining in disgust.

Seriously though, this has been expected for a while. Personally I already have a bunch of coins so I am willing to waste a few hundred $ worth of electricity a month to continue mining with ASICs (even at a loss) just to protect the network and the coins I already have.

No, we are waiting on our ASIC chips right now, as I've stated in a number of other places, though it's understandable if you have missed the posts, since they are spread out everywhere.

The bASIC ASICs are already taped out from the wafer...

Maybe you could tell us just what you think "taped out" means.
The data tape has been put into a Fedex/DHL overnight envelope and already out the door in the hands of the courier and on the way to the fab?

I guess nowadays people just SFTP the files to the fab.
1489  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Avalon ASIC Development Status on: October 26, 2012, 09:59:30 AM
Why would the pools disappear?
If someone mines with a single gpu now and has 1/10000th of the total networkspeed and gets a asic and still has a 1/10000th of the total networkspeed, it's still a good idea to use a pool.

All the major pools now won't support an ASIC. There has to be major changes for them to support ASIC. Especially at the beginning when ASIC are returning easy work extremely fast. Even with stratum there's going to be major bandwidth problems in the beginning.
Why is the 1kB/s (regardless of miningspeed) a major bandwidth problem?
If there were a period where a block was solved once every 5 seconds (just making this number up) until difficulty caught up I am guessing that there could be a temporary network congestion problem. Mining might only be 1kB/s but block propagation could take up a large chunk of network bandwidth. You could see p2pool-like problems manfesting on the main Bitcoin network, the major one being collisions of solved blocks that will result in many orphans. This wouldn't be a pool issue, though.
1490  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 60 ghs SC from BFL? on: October 24, 2012, 10:45:04 PM
they should make something in between single sc and mini rig :/
Why?
would be nice to have a place to invest that's between them
You can order more than 1 Single. And they price/GH/s is about the same between the two.
Still, you'd hope that someone wanting to spend $10-$15K on a mining solution wouldn't need to deal with an out of the box solutions involving 10 separate units, 10 power bricks, and a rat's nest of power and USB cables. I already have a 4U case ready (with PS, nettop and USB hub embedded inside) waiting for my SC singles. IMO having a bunch of loose singles mining away in a shared datacenter attracts too much unwanted attention.

So do people think some day we can buy SHA-256 IP cores from anybody, kind of like the 8051?
1492  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: BitCoin == Hawala on: October 07, 2012, 12:56:08 PM
Both systems rely on trust trust to move money almost instantly based on information alone. Hawala is based on the trust between the hawaladars. Bitcoin reliens on the integrity of the blockchain and protocol. They are very similar in the sense that the trust does not depend on banks and government.
1493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: bitcoin is centralised on: October 06, 2012, 10:07:54 PM
It sounds like the OP is suggesting to remove the most efficient price discovery mechanism from the market. That can't be a good thing, can it? Two people will end up paying different amounts of BTC for the same item or service.

In addition to the consistent weekly payments that I've been getting, I just noticed that a largish payment arrived in my wallet on 10/3.
1495  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: sapphire 5870 fan problem on: October 05, 2012, 01:18:47 AM
I just had a Sapphire 5830 seize up on me and took some pictures while fixing it. The fans look similar to those used on the 5870 except that the mounting holes are different.

These fans are made by "firstd" and you should be able to pop them right out.

Use a pair of screwdrivers or something similar.

Do not apply any force on the fan blades as they will break easily.

Once the fan pops out the spindle and hole are exposed. You can apply lube to both the spindle and the hole.

I like Bel-Ray chain lube, a high-performance lube designed for motorcycle racing applications. This the lube is thick and sticky and the fan does not spin as freely as thin lube. However is stays on longer and I won't be surprised if it lasts longer than the original lube. I've never had to reapply this.

If the fan has developed a rattle, thick lube would help elminate this. However, most people seem to prefer light machine oil so you might feel safer using that instead.

1496  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: High Efficiency FPGA & ASIC Bitcoin Mining Devices https://BTCFPGA.com on: October 02, 2012, 10:26:06 PM
cablepair,

Minor nitpick on the website. I've submitted 3 orders over the past several weeks and each time I still have to click a checkbox to agree to a blank Terms and Conditions page. I actually read these things so it is a little unnerving for me.
1497  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 3 GPU fans died on me this month. Someone please help me. :( on: October 01, 2012, 11:44:59 AM
Doesn't XFX have a "double lifetime" warranty for AMD 5xxx and 6xxx series cards? Even if you bought them used if you still have the registration code you could try to register for warranty as the second owner.

I've never had a problem getting XFX to send me a replacement fans (actually they send the entire heatsink/fan assembly).

I just received my principal + interests. I think Viktor is one of the most serious people here, I want to thank him for all the smooth transactions, I never had any problems with him.

Thank you Viktor, I hope to be able to work with you again in the future.

Same here.
Thanks Victor.
Ditto.

Been nice doing business with Victor.
1500  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [400GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: September 28, 2012, 12:25:22 PM
Are BFL FPGA Singles the only type mining hardware that is currently not compatible with p2pool?

When I upgrade mine to "SC" Singles (hopefully in 2 months) I am expecting these to work with p2pool. Is that a reasonable expectation?
