161  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why is Bitcoin gaining this much fame despite it's restrictions? on: January 24, 2023, 03:25:06 PM
What sort of restrictions have been placed on it. Regulations normally allow things to gain acceptance providing they're not an outright ban (or near one).

When were people talking about it? Was that recently due to the last spike or has it been ongoing for a while? If it's more recently, are you sure they weren't already talking about it like franky said?

Crypto hype in general has been going on for longer than bitcoin has been a thing imo. Bank security is generally worse than most exchanges that function in cryptocurrency now because of it and a lot of cryptocurrency holders also have more secure assets too because they have no need to trust in anyone else to keep their keys secure (though there'll be people in the market with weaker security too so it's a topic worth researching).
162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I have gotten used to using bitcoin for payment but. .. on: January 24, 2023, 03:09:25 PM
they would've implemented bitcoin payments a lot sooner.
It's regulatory problems unfortunately...

Yes it likely is, and also the reason why steam still haven't brought back bitcoin payments 5 years+ after accepting them for a few months iirc.

@OP purse seemed pretty good when I used them and generally filled orders pretty quickly (there were certain days of the week where orders fill faster so it's worth leaving something up for a few days) - I don't normally buy next day shipping and a lot of people that fill those orders seem to have it so it seemed to pay to wait 3 days for an order to be filled.
163  Economy / Economics / Re: Common Currency for Brazil and Argentina: Africa Why? on: January 24, 2023, 02:57:28 PM
If you unify a currency do you strengthen certain modes of corruption and weaken others too? Who's making that currency and what will stop them printing too much for themselves?

All countries have high levels of corruption already when it comes to managing government spending but I think a unified currency would make that worse (I'd be inclined to say the same for the UK too if it aligned its currency with another country's again).

As a mode of exchange, you could of course argue for one but then gold (or another asset) might already be able to serve that purpose.
164  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Please Help, Am Running low on ideas. on: January 24, 2023, 02:51:05 PM
Experience? I have too many questions still and forget to post a lot of them (particularly economic speculation of businesses in crypto and nft gaming).

A lot of people take news sites, twitter or YouTube and write posts about them here (just try to make sure the sources are legit enough and the information is fairly accurate if you're not starting up a discussion topic).
165  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoin trading or Investing in the stock market on: January 23, 2023, 09:37:06 PM
Why are the twoo options trading bitcoin and investing in the stock market? What about trading the stock market or investing in bitcoin?

If you're going into trading, you'll be best off starting to trade both to høne your skills and work out which one you're more accurate with/which you find easier.

Investing brings a more stable long term growth but trading can bring higher returns than investing if done well.
166  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: UK fines online casino for only asking KYC from winning gamblers on: January 23, 2023, 09:31:27 PM
I have a feeling this is argued as something that happens in normal casinos so its fine to do online but I doubt that actually works out law wise (eg we can only hold £100,000 in our casino and need to bank transfer/cheque for higher).

I'm surprised it's taken them this long to consider it illegal though and something worth investigating (perhaps it's just that a case has only now been brought against them).

167  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: State of secrets management, recommendations and improvement proposals 2022 on: January 23, 2023, 01:30:33 PM
Trezor and ledger have password manager extensions iirc (trezor definitely does). There's also a python module that can handle pgp that I've seen mentioned here before.

There also looks to be a trezor implementation of SSH: https://trezor.io/learn/a/ssh-with-trezor

I haven't tested any of these but just know others have used them or they're available.
168  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Coingecko portfolio tracker? on: January 23, 2023, 01:13:13 PM
I haven't used that tracker but are you sure you're looking at the right box? I've seen a lot of statements that say things like "money in", "money out", "overall balance" and this might be filed the same way (just as a thought).
169  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and Crypto Recovery on: January 22, 2023, 08:11:35 PM
There are quite a few of these sorts of services (and even more people who know how to do them).

There's a lot of open source software available for doing this too that normally allow easy ways for users to produce wordlists that they can plug into the software to try to decrypt a wallet (I think most services can go one stop further fairly easily and compare how preciously decrypted information has been encrypted by other users to see what they can do to expand those wordlists - ie if some people are just short of a symbol at the end).

GPUs seem to have made passwords easier to crack too. It used to be (in the 2000s) that you'd only need 8 random characters to have a fairly secure password, now you need more than 13.
170  Economy / Economics / Re: After Budgeting, How Do I Deal With Unexcepted Expenses? on: January 22, 2023, 08:03:06 PM
If "unexpected spending" can relate to self sabotage then maybe you should start tracking your finances over different periods of time.

If over a year you're spending more than is realistic in a lot of categories, maybe you should remind yourself of that to stop you doing it as much (ie you keep 10%.of funds aside to invest but keep gambling with it or buying things you don't need in excess) - the longer the time period the more money you'll end up "wasting". If it's to do with inflation, it might be worth changing your perspective and waiting for when things become more stable before you try to grow your savings and investments as it'll likely become easier once prices are stabler.

You could also invest or save in a way that'll make you forget about it. Maybe you're focusing too much on money that you're making yourself want to spend it too (a regular investment might prevent against this if you see your available balance in your account as lower before you even start to budget).
171  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Trading as wealth. on: January 22, 2023, 07:50:08 PM
Why are you saying there's an asset called "bitcoin core" and when did you last trade gold at a market?

Was there a reason for your topic as I'm still confused of its purpose although crypto has been the best performing asset of the last decade (particularly bitcoin and ethereum).
172  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Was Binance aware of the impending bankruptcy of FTX? on: January 22, 2023, 07:45:07 PM
Well probably never know for sure and there's a good chance it was coincidence too. Binance may have been trying to do a lot of sell offs at once to reduce their risk after luna collapsed and wiped out quite a lot of their free investment capital (and ftx's). This seems like it could've been something that started ftx's insolvency issues too (along with bailing out other services that were insolvent without having the funding for them).

I don't think it's possible binance would know for definite what they'd destroy by devesting ftt and other coins (I don't think it's unreasonable to assume they'd shake out a few exchanges by doing that and then launching their "proof of reserves" program).
173  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Backtesting a strategy when no coding skills on: January 22, 2023, 07:36:41 PM
If you can't code at all and want to do back testing you're probably going to have to do it manually or learn to code something that can provide just enough information (like using a spreadsheet).
174  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Silence is Golden But... on: January 21, 2023, 01:21:58 PM
Correcting misinformation in a well thought out way is the only good way to go about improving the reputation of the technology. Bringing beliefs into misinformation (eg emotioned arguments) can often spread more misinformation.

Free advice from wealthy people normally isn't free and that's a point you have to consider. Almost everyone has a self serving motive behind it - particularly if they're hoarding wealth.

Even if some of those people enjoy using the Internet and make a profit from it in a lot of cases, that doesn't mean they understand it. They probably have entire teams ensuring they're not attacked while using it and only access trusted sources without making themselves more anonymous/getting someone else to do it.
175  Economy / Economics / Re: [INFO] University Of Singapore Invent VR Glove To Let You Feel the Metaverse on: January 20, 2023, 04:26:11 PM
This does feel like something we should already have had though, I wonder why we didn't and if it'll actually get used that much because of this. Perhaps this is the start of something bigger too (like suits that can pressurise places for gaming although maybe that's a bit dangerous to have a jacket that adds pressure/vibrates on the chest when you're shot for example).
176  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: QUESTION: For Gambling Enthusiasts ❗❗ on: January 20, 2023, 04:21:21 PM
If B if your answer then I doubt you have long to wait. There's already games like axie/roy that do that sort of thing but not with good graphics/strategy yet imo as well as live table games (which I assume function like actual casinos and I was under the impression they have these for blackjack and poker).

I'd prefer a PvP that was designed and played like an MMORPG but I guess we're a while away from that being a thing (wagers could be placed on leagues of those imo too to make it more appealing to gambling).
177  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: OP_VAULT and OP_UNVAULT what you guys think? on: January 20, 2023, 03:59:58 PM
Time locks are already a thing: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Timelock
Yes. And?

Quote
I don't see much of a purpose for "vaulting" and "unvaulting" funds as it seems to serve the same purpose and doesn't add much/any extra security than a multisig might.

I disagree. Per the author,

Quote
Vaults are an especially useful kind of covenant that give Bitcoin users operational simplicity
during expected use, but heightened security in the event of unauthorized access to private keys

Multisig does the same though?

I'm.sure there could be a mistake I've made in this (hence why I didn't post it straight away) but why is this different from.a 2of2 multisig where a time locked transaction is signed from.them 2 and held in a wallet. The second can still sign for funds to be spent if they want to at any time (to cosign the first) but it could be stored in a more secure manner (such as on an airgapped machine).

Considering you have to store extra values in op_vault (an extra address at least) it just seems like a less efficient way to do it.

I think NotATether was getting at the idea that an attacker unvaulting coins wouldn't be waiting around with their transaction too and would try to do both broadcasts fairly quickly.

179  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Best exchanges to launch new coin on: January 20, 2023, 05:14:34 AM
It might be worth considering advertising your coin too instead of trying to get it listed on exchanges. I think your best hope for getting a coin recognised by a lot of people on an exchange is either: by posting hype about the project (especially from a reputable source), or by a pump and dump team finding it and trying to use it to get more money for themselves.
180  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Hex Editor Search for 2012-2015 Electrum Wallet on: January 19, 2023, 11:50:58 PM
How big are the drives? If they're under 1tb you could image them onto (4) bigger (eg 24tb) drives and then scan through those images a lot easier. It's might be worth considering they're lost though if you keep writing to them and haven't put them in areas they'd be protected (or backed them up).

It'd make sense to search for strings like "electrum" and "default-wallet" it'd also make sense to try to work out how electrum stores encrypted and unencrypted wallet files and find a string from those (but I'm not too sure how they're stored).
