1641  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could Bitcoin theoretically survive under manual mining only? on: March 27, 2016, 01:04:06 PM
Wouldn't one guy with a PC which has survived, be easily able to execute a 51% attack?
The high hashing power which secures the blockchain is what makes Bitcoin what it is today.
1642  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-25] What Came First, Bitcoin or Ransomware? on: March 27, 2016, 01:00:58 PM
Ransomware was here before Bitcoin, but the fact is that after Bitcoin became more popular and thus more valuable, the amount of ransomware exploded and people were seeing the negative effect as they downloaded some bad stuff.

Bitcoin being valuable shouldn't be a reason for the explosion in ransomware. In the end, hackers are interested in extracting the maximum amount of money they can from people. If it were possible previously, they would have just asked for 2X$ of wire transfer, instead of X$.
1643  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-26] Dutch Central Bank May Launch Own Digital Currency on: March 27, 2016, 12:56:22 PM
Various governments and central banks seem to be going gaga over the blockchain. Yet, there is this resistance to even acknowledge bitcoin by many countries. They just seem to be resisting the inevitable.

Is Bitcoin the New Swiss Bank Account (And Is That a Problem?)

Bitcoin was embraced by many for its libertarian ideals of economic liberty and individual sovereignty. But it has now effectively been dragged into the current, and very public, privacy debate between Apple and the FBI.

http://www.nasdaq.com/article/is-bitcoin-the-new-swiss-bank-account-and-is-that-a-problem-cm597377

Public opinion is definitely in favour of Apple in the encryption debate. Governments (including tax collectors) should just get used to the reality that strong encryption methods are available to everybody now. They should adapt, even though jobs like tax collection might be more difficult in the Bitcoin world.
1645  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Enormous ways to earning Bitcoin on: March 26, 2016, 08:04:43 AM
You need to offer a physical product or some kind of service such as web design. Everything else is a waste of time. Sig campaigns? Do you really want to sell yourself out for pennies?

Hard work is required for any kind of real reward. That's true for life, it's also true for bitcoin.

I'll give a hint - trading on peer2peer marketplaces is a good way to get started. And you get to offer a useful service - helping people purchase bitcoin easily without having to go through coinbase or exchanges.

Pennies ? For me signature campaign is the best way to earn bitcoin, It's not about pennies though, if your rank high, of course you will get better rates. And if you can online 20+ hours, signature campaign is the best choice.

Online for 20 hours?
Most of us have a real life - job, family, hobbies...
1646  Economy / Speculation / Re: Halving and its effects on: March 26, 2016, 07:33:48 AM
My expectation for the price is to remain flat (+- 10%).
We have seen a rapid price increase in the last few months of 2015, and the impact of the block reward halving seems to have been factored in.
1647  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-25]Venezuelan Government Launches Anti-Bitcoin Campaign on: March 26, 2016, 07:31:28 AM

Am I the only one who sees such stories as something positive? People in countries like Venezuela are aware that they're being fed with government propaganda and many will do the opposite of whatever the official advise is.

Therefore it's essentially free advertising campaign in the national tv channel. Although people may not be able to legally trade BTC (not sure on that tho) if the Bitcoin awareness and demand is high, they'll easily find a way to bypass any restrictions.

As Venezuelan citizens learn about Bitcoin, I would expect there to be a lot of black market dealing going on where they sell their Bitcoin for local currency or vice versa and start trading with each other in secret, this is exactly the type of thing that Bitcoin is very good at, the only restrictions they'd have to deal with generally are the banking services. In which case in a situation like Venezula the citizens might choose to abandon the paper currency altogether and just use Bitcoin because it works and doesn't lose value so easily.

The citizens already loathe their currency. They will take dollars anyday. Bitcoin might be gaining in prominence, but I suspect it will be a very small part of the overall black market for foreign currency.
1648  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-25] What Came First, Bitcoin or Ransomware? on: March 26, 2016, 07:27:29 AM
The popular misconception among many people is that the ransomware attacks are due to bitcoin. However, it is not true and the ransomware has been around for a long time, even before bitcoin became popular. It is just the choice of payment which has changed from conventional fund transfer methods to bitcoin due to the ease of transactions, pseudonymity and transparency of transaction data on the blockchain.

The history of ransomware dates back to ages when the digital currency was unheard of among the masses. The first recorded ransomware attack was in 1989 called PC Cyborg or AIDS Trojan. The ransomware was created by Joseph Popp which claimed the software license on the uses computer has expired and demanded a ransom of $189 to be paid to PC Cyborg Corporation for decrypting the files on the computer. Since then there have been various ransomware attacks.

I doubt if such a misconception is there among the public. What is certain is that almost all ransomware have evolved and adopted bitcoin. They have no qualms about acknowledging the advantages of Bitcoin.
1649  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-25]Venezuelan Government Launches Anti-Bitcoin Campaign on: March 25, 2016, 01:37:06 PM
Bitcoin is the currency of rapists? That is a new one - something which I haven't heard of until now.

Quote
For Venezuelans, it is not a secret the damage that it has caused to the economy and that it is being pushed and promoted via website like Dollar Today, that it has got an illegal and criminal exchange rate that has caused severe damage to the national economy, causing increased levels of inflation which don’t match normal parameters of economic development

As usual, they are trying to blame the high inflation on external factors rather than the government's mismanagement.
1650  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-25]Eight Months Since BitLicense’s Inception, Only One License Has Been on: March 25, 2016, 01:33:04 PM
Since the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) launched its new means of regulating companies operating in the cryptocurrency industry, BitLicense, eight months ago in June 2015, the regulatory process has only approved one application.

Launched to foster acceptance by administrative bodies

When it was announced that the NYDFS was launching its BitLicense programme in New York, the news was met with positive remarks by leading industry professionals. Many take the view that regulation, although it may limit the cryptocurrency industry temporarily, is in reality hugely beneficial as it means there is growing acceptance by administrative bodies, and therefore hopefully, the general public will feel more comfortable using the new technology.

This is insane. A sure shot way to stiffle innovation.
It is but natural for businesses to move to friendlier jurisdictions.
1651  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-25] Verisign Patent Addresses Double Spending in Digital Currency on: March 25, 2016, 09:11:27 AM
Do you expect to see this patent apply to Bitcoin, or will developers come up with a different solution?

Patents are not something native to the Bitcoin world,  but that isn’t keeping companies from trying to file them anyway. Bank of America has been trying to patent various blockchain-based solutions in the recent months, and now Verisign is looking to do the same. Based on a recent Medium post, we can see how Verisign wants to address the double spend scenario in the digital currency world.

http://bitcoinist.net/verisign-patent-addresses-double-spending-in-digital-currency/

The medium article has already been posted here.

It would be interesting to see if this patent is indeed granted.

Using a mixer should solve most of the problems.
Unless you have thousands of coins to launder, you should be pretty safe.
1653  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you honestly think Bitcoin toys would help us?! on: March 25, 2016, 09:03:45 AM
Yes, I think it would. We need all the ways possible to increase Bitcoin's brand value.
People didn't think physical coins had a role to play in a digital currency, but they did help.

1655  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-24]Paris-based Bitit launches to let you buy Bitcoins from Stores on: March 25, 2016, 06:47:35 AM
Paris-based Bitit launches to let you buy Bitcoins from 100,000 physical stores around the world

Despite questions about Bitcoin’s future, a new Paris-based startup called Bitit has created a service designed to make it easier than ever for average people to acquire the virtual currency. Nicolas Katan, cofounder and CEO of Bitit, says the company’s goal is to solve two of Bitcoin’s biggest issues: accessibility and fraud. “We have a vision to democratize Bitcoin for all,” he said. “Bitcoin is a really great technology. But the problem for now is that it is complicated and difficult for people to access.”

The article says exchange services can charge people who want to buy and sell bitcoins as much as 20%.
That is a ridiculous amount of fees to pay. No wonder new companies are trying to cut this to more reasonable levels.
1656  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This is why decentralization and resiliency is most important... on: March 20, 2016, 08:36:07 AM
they even used the Bolivarian Intelligence Service for find these innocent guys  Lips sealed

These guys aren't innocent... it's a shitty thing for the Venezuelan government to do, but they were breaking laws, and the miners knew this. Holding foreign currencies (including Bitcoin or USD) is illegal in Venezuela. They knew that what they were doing could be grounds for legal troubles. They should have been using a VPN and done their mining more covertly, like the other miners in the country.

I'm not supporting Venezuela or damning Bitcoin users in Venezuela. I'm only pointing out that these two were not innocent.

Well, adoption of Bitcoin in Venezuela has increased hugely in the last few years. So if a law puts a significant portion of the population in breach of it, there must be something wrong with it.
1657  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: paypal or bitcoin? on: March 20, 2016, 08:05:31 AM
Bitcoin is great and all but it doesn't offer the same protection as Paypal does. With Bitcoin, if you're not satisfied with the product or service you received, there's no one to go to, you suck it up and move on. With Paypal you have ways to start disputes with the seller or buyer.

Bitcoin is great and it offers much protection to the seller than Paypal.
No one-sided chargebacks, high fees and hassles.

If the buyer is unsatisfied, he can always approach the seller to sort out issues.
1658  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-18] Venezuelan government lambasts Bitcoin as currency of criminals on: March 20, 2016, 08:02:29 AM
I suppose the government even places blame for the 98.3% inflation on Bitcoin usage. When you have such spectacular failure by the government in providing a stable currency, you will have something filling the void. If not Bitcoin, people will use bottle caps, eggs, or anything which can retain value.
1659  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2016-03-19] Building Bitcoin Support in Dubai on: March 20, 2016, 07:58:21 AM
Remittances from the UAE are significant - to countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan and India. This is one area where adoption can really take off. Once you have this user base, adoption for transactions within UAE will increase too.
1660  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What about Halving??? on: March 19, 2016, 01:20:55 AM
Halving of bitcoin obviously will hit  the miners first. Their profits will decrease, and therefore, some of them come out of the game. But anyway new people will come and balance will be restored.

mu only concern now is with the price. Shouldn't it be rising already???

 Huh

Well, it was around $200 at the end of 2015.
So yes, it has already risen significantly.
